The most brazen terrorist attack in history. A country bent on revenge. A love affair cut short. A broken heart that never truly heals.

Ava

I knew on the day of the attack that our lives were changed forever. What I didn’t know then was that I’d never see John again after he deployed. One day he was living with me, sleeping next to me, making plans with me. The next day he was gone. That was five years ago. The world has moved on from that awful day, but I’m stuck in my own personal hell, waiting for a man who may be dead for all I know. At my sister’s wedding, I meet Eric, the brother of the groom, and my heart comes alive once again.

The world is riveted by the capture of the terrorist mastermind, brought down by U.S. Special Forces in a daring raid. Now I’m trapped between hoping I’ll hear from John and fearing what’ll become of my new life with Eric if I do. From a New York Times bestselling author, Five Years Gone, is an epic story of love, honor, duty, unbearable choices and impossible dilemmas. When you finish Five Years Gone, make sure you read the sequel, One Year Home.

Five Years Gone should be a major motion picture.
5 Stars
Five Years Gone should be a major motion picture.
Five Years Gone by Marie Force is one of this rare books that reminds me why I love reading. This is a 5 star 💫 Top Pick for me. The world Ms Force crafts will suck you in from the first words and the multiple POV's will have you forgetting these characters are fictional. Five Years Gone should be a major motion picture.I wish I could just say read this book and you would.... but I know I have to find words to convey this literary genius without revealing too much about the story and it's conclusion. So here goes....Ava's journey to happy was laced with emotions, ups and downs and set back all while the author made grief and longing tangible. On that topic the use of grief and the swirling emotions around loss speak to the depth of this author's talent.Ms Force's ability to create a world where world events and events the characters lives and secondary characters lives weave into this story as they impact all characters was literary genius. The terrorist attack, the use of it throughout the book, Eric's parents, Miles' loss and well so much more all comes together to create what feels like a moment in time of the lives of these real feel characters.I adored Eric and his vulnerability and his unwavering support of Ava. His love is never in question nor is his desire for her emotional well being.John oh John........how to relay my thoughts without a spoiler. Let's just say John's struggles are tangible. This story is Ava's journey to happy and the how she gets there is filled with high's and low's and support, support from friends and family and her therapist (I really like this element). As Ava gains her footing and voice the end of the book revealed a woman who knew what she wanted and how she wanted to be loved all while having the grace to be a friend in the darkest moments.I was ecstatic to read that readers will get to read more in this world when Ms Force release One Year Home next year. I do wish I didn't have to wait until the summer of 2019 but that's just because this story feels so real and I will miss them. Please do not fret, Ava's gets her happy in Five Years Gone. The next book is about another character's happy.

Great read.
Kept you guessing and turning the page. I have mixed feelings about it all. I couldn’t imagine what the main character would be thinking or feeling with the turn of events. It was truly a good read and kept me engaged.

I am a fan of down to earthness of her writing. It’s more rooted in reality than fantasy. Issues aren’t all black or white.

4 1/2 Stars!!

“I love you. I’ll always love you.” Then he kissed me as passionately as he ever had and was gone, out the door in a flash of camouflage. I never saw him again."

John, the love of Ava's life, was deployed 5 years earlier and she has not heard one word from him. She can't locate any trace of him. It's almost as if he never existed! Desperately needing a fresh start, she leaves San Diego for New York City and meets an amazing man at her sister's wedding. Eric is handsome, smart, loving...all in all, the perfect man. Yet Ava is afraid to go "all in" with Eric, still dreaming about John and what might have become of him.

"It’s time now to set new goals, to start over, to begin a life that doesn’t have John at the center of it the way it did here. It’ll be nice to be back with people who love me and care about me, even if they tend toward smothering at times. That’s looking rather good to me after years of loneliness and grief."

Ava knows she must meet new people, re-connect with her family and forge new bonds. And Eric, who was also left brokenhearted when his ex-fiancee ghosted him, seems like the perfect match for her. They fall in love and their relationship is sweet, tender and passionate. But Ava is still haunted by her memories of John and agrees to seek professional counseling.

This book is incredibly emotional and timely. The sacrifices by our military men and women are immense, and are honored by this book. I was waiting for the other shoe to drop the entire time I was reading this very engrossing and passionate story. I could not stop reading and loved the very unique, multiple POV's of Ava, Eric, John and their families.

"He’s loyal and devoted and adorable and sexy. I know his family and his secrets, which means so much to me. With Eric, what you see is what you get, and considering my past, there’s a lot to be said for that."

OMG ERIC! I loved him and desperately wanted everyone to have a happy ending. This was my first book by Marie Force and I was completely invested in this story. And the ending was not AT ALL what I expected! Highly recommend for all fans of military romance.

“I’m right here, sweetheart, and I’ll always be right here, no matter what. I love you so much. Nothing will ever hurt you again, not as long as I have a breath left in me.”

I couldn't put this down. What an incredible story!! Ava's situation broke my heart. Eric's situation broke my heart. John's situation broke my heart. I wanted everyone to win. One of the best books I've read in a long long time.

After a KU book slump, this one was a nice change. Really enjoyed and will read more by this author.

When Ava met John in San Diego, she found a man who consumed her, fell in love with and was just happy as can be in the two years they were together. Then John was called to duty in the military and that is where her life she lived with John went to hell in a handbasket because he went away and never returned. Five years has passed, and Ava decides to leave San Diego and move back to New York City, to her family and try to put her life, her heart, back together again. But not knowing where John is, what happened to him or even if he is still a live or dead, has colored everything even as she tries to move past the past and embrace a possible new romance with a new man but John lingers in her mind and heart. Can Ava finally put to rest the past in order to have the present and future she longs for? Can she ever find peace with someone new while the man who left her behind haunts her every moment of every day?

FIVE YEARS GONE is a story that will leave you emotionally gutted. It’s a story that literally ripped me asunder and I was left shaking with emotions that I just could not process. Ms. Force delivers a powerful story that will leave you breathless as you follow Ava’s journey from the moment she met John to the present where she tries to figure out how to live with no answers to so many questions and a heart that is shattered beyond belief. With each page you flip, the reader is drawn more and more into Ava’s story and we get to see how she copes, her relationships with family, new friends and more as she tries to live once again. What go to me the most was how real the characters were. Ava, John, Eric and all the rest as they helped move the story along even as I was eager to see what Ava’s would find out in the end. The author does an amazing job in capturing each character’s vibrant and at times annoying personality quirks. Though yes, I have to say sometimes I really wanted to shake Ava at times and say to her to get help or to talk about what happened. Several twists had me on the edge of my seat and I swear I was just about ready to bawl when the last few chapters came about and I really don’t want to give away to many things because, man, this book just guts you to a level I haven’t experienced in a long time while reading a book.

FIVE YEARS GONE is a story about moving on even when you can’t think of doing so, of forgiveness, of love, duty and more. Ms. Force delivers a stunning story that will keep you on the edge of your seat and flipping the pages till the very end of the book is closed. With characters like Ava, Eric and more to keep the pace moving we get to see how one woman chose to move on with her life even though the answers she seeks may never materialize. FIVE YEARS GONE is a departure over this author’s past books and yes, she is still one of my favorite authors that I will auto-buy when ever she has a release coming up. FIVE YEARS GONE is a different kind of story than what her readers may be used to. The only draw back I got was the constant character back and forth chapter wise. One minute we are in Ava’s head, next chapter maybe Eric’s or a friend or back to Ava. It got confusing at first and yes, a bit annoying, until the story started to smooth out and we got to see how Ava was and the path she was trying to forge by herself. I recommend not coming into this book expecting a classic Marie Force story. What we get with FIVE YEARS GONE is something different, emotional and downright perfect in this world we live in today. Yes, its intense and keeps you running the gauntlet of emotions but the ending though not one I might of though t would happen in the beginning but where Ava finally ends in the final chapter is the perfect ending in my opinion. But get the tissues and keep them handy because you WILL cry with this story. You will go and hug your partner/lover/husband/family tight for a few minutes and just feel because I can say with all honesty, Ms. Force, you deliver a story that left me gutted emotion wise and I can’t wait to see where the sequel will go next.

I remember reading a synopsis of this book and thought I didn't want to read a book about a love triangle. Then I saw this book on KU and downloaded it, not realizing it was the same book. (I am a fan of Marie Force.) I read the first few and last few chapters, crying in the last ones. I can't say I agreed with the ending, but there really isn't a good ending. I don't recommend this book. 😔

I do love a military romance. This one sort of has a twist as he’s really gone most of the book leaving you in suspense. I think there must be a sequel the way it ends. I do like the main characters a lot. As an FYI the steam in this book is low level and on the back burner. Personally I like a little more action and intrigue and yes a bit spicier romance, but I think it would be a solid and enjoyable read for most.
