These three volumes of Adams's letters constitute an American literary masterpiece. They bring togetherin full with superb annotationssome 1600 epistles from Adams to his closed circle of friends. An excellent introduction and prefatory remarks for each year place the letters in historical context. The letters provide an engaging personal history of one brilliant if forlorn man and his tumultuous times. Adams bore the weight of his famous family. But at 53 his youthful faith in reform had been dashed; he was a critical observer of power, not a participant. His reaction to change and his predictions of the future were gloomy, misanthropic, even mordant. Yet the letters teem with absorbing commentary on politics, economics, science, and society; they also reveal a warm and caring person. More than historical documents this is literature at its best. 'The Letters Of Henry Adams' consists of a three volume set which chronicles the people, events, and ideas Adams recorded, with brilliance and wit.--Volume I shows him growing from a high-spirited but self-conscious twenty-year-old to a self-assured man of the world. --Volume II takes him from his years as a crusading journalist in Grant's Washington, through his marriage to Clover Hooper and his pioneer work as a history professor at Harvard and editor of the 'North American Review, ' to his settling in Washington as a professional historian. This halcyon period comes to a catastrophic close with Clover's suicide.--Volume III traces his gradual recovery from the shock of his wife's death as he seeks distraction in travel--to Japan, to Cuba, and in 1891-92 to the South Seas--a recovery complicated by his falling dangerously in love with Elizabeth Cameron, a beautiful young wife of a leading senator.
