Seems that ths book provided an overview
Recommend the 3 Volume book on TR
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2015Great bio! It is the perfect complement to Edmund Morris' TR trilogy. While Morris focuses on TR's personal relationships and adventures, Harbaugh provides an excellent analysis of TR's political views and activities. I highly recommend this bio to all Theodore Roosevelt fans!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2018Don’t buy this book. It is almost unreadable. The content is fine but the typeset is so bad you can’tmmake Out some of the words. In addition the authorm(or publisher ) omitted man periods at the end of sentences. I have never seen anything like this. I sent the original back the reordered thinking I just got a bad print copy but the second boook was exactly the same.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2001This biography is highly praised by Roosevelt buffs because it is precise, complete and well balanced. It is in the same league as the Edmund Morris books and Nathan Millers fine work on Theodore Roosevelt.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2013Contrary to the information provided by Amazon, this book was published in 1961 and is not a reproduction of a book published before 1923. See one reliable reference: [...]. Dr. Harbaugh was a great historian and a wonderful teacher nonetheless, he didn't write this acclaimed biography at age three.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2020This is certainly a unique look at TR’s life. Those who are looking for an in-depth, fully detailed biography may need to look elsewhere (like Morris’ classic 3-volume set). This book features lots of analysis of what TR did, how people reacted to it, why he did as he did and is liberal both in its praise and condemnation of his actions. Harbaugh manages to keep from writing a book full of vitriol and venom but he regularly takes TR to task for mistakes and mis-steps, or even (in Harbaugh’s judgment) why he did as he did. And just when Harbaugh is railing against TR the book will take a surprising turn praising TR for his greatness. It is kind of an odd mix.
Speaking of odd mixes, why some of the material is covered at length while other facets of TR’s life are left largely un-noticed is a real enigma. For example, Harbaugh says nothing about TR’s famous “Man in the Arena” speech while giving much attention to a speech TR gave to the American Historical Association on “History as Literature” (455-456). This reviewer is just not certain about some of these choices! Harbaugh also responds to other’s material about TR, referencing Beale and other writers and what they said about TR and why that was wrong or right. This takes away from his effort because many may not even be familiar with these other writers or what they said or the debate that was going on about TR when Harbaugh was writing. It seems to move the spotlight too far off the subject and leads the reader over into academia and academic discussion.
The writing style is unusual, with a turn of the phrase that sometimes puzzles and makes the reader re-read a sentence because it seems to be missing a word. Some of the vocabulary is unusual too.
All in all, it’s a good read and an important read for TR buffs because it gives a critical analysis of TR’s politics, diplomacy, writings and life. It is not just the facts. It is Harbaugh’s verdict on TR’s life, and while his critique may differ with my own it was worth considering an informed and well educated view of one of American’s greatest Presidents.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2000Amazon CustomerThis history is educational concerning TR's political and personal life. However, the writing is fairly dry and it is not very inspiring.
