This award-winning, double-sided foldout book takes you on a fascinating journey down through the layers of the Earth, all the way to the planet’s core and out the other side.

When you’re out walking around, whether on the city streets or a country trail, there’s always so much to see and hear. But do you ever stop and look down? Have you ever wondered what’s going on deep in the ground under your feet?

There are so many amazing sights to see!
One side of the foldout shows the ground beneath the city, while the reverse side shows the ground beneath the countryside. The underground scenes include tunnels and pipes, creatures’ burrows, layers of rock, and the planet’s molten core, each running seamlessly into the next.

Mixing urban and rural settings, covering subjects such as
geology, archaeology, and natural history, The Street Beneath My Feetoffers children the opportunity to explore their world through a detailed learning experience. And its foldout, laperello (or concertina) style, which extends to eight feet in length, is ideal for spreading out on the floor to pore over for hours.

Explore even more of the world with
The Skies Above My Eyes (August 2018) and The World Around Me (October 2020), companion books from the Look Closer series.

What You Can Find in The Street Beneath My Feet

Topsoil

Earthworms burrow their way through the soil, loosening it up so water and air can flow through it. Earthworms are expert recyclers, eating dead plants in the soil.

Fossils

Fossils show us the living things that existed millions of years ago. When these creatures dies, their bones sank into soft mud. Gradually, more and more layers of mud, clay, and sand covered the bones and they became surrounded by rock. Over time, the bones became rock-like and turned into fossils.

Mantle

Back up at the top of the mantle there is magma on the move! Where there are cracks in the crust above, magma can move upward. It will burst out as lava erupting from a volcano on the Earth's surface.

Clay

This underground tunnel has been dug through a kind of soil called clay. Clay is perfect for tunnels because it keeps water out.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 2–4—This informative oversize book takes curious readers on a journey to the center of the earth and back. A boy walks down a noisy city street, his red sneakers pounding the pavement, and he wonders, "What's going on deep in the ground?" Level by level, he describes what can be found beneath his feet. Beginning with cables and pipes, earthworms and insects, then moving on to subway systems and the artifacts of lost civilizations, the boy delves deeper and deeper, highlighting the unique characteristics of each layer of the earth's crust, mantle, and core. Replete with intriguing scientific facts, this engrossing title offers a fine overview of basic earth science. The intricate illustrations deftly reinforce the text, which is scattered from top to bottom throughout each spread. The pictures flow seamlessly from one layer to the next, drawing viewers' eyes down the page. The many atmospheric details inspire closer examination of each underground level. Observant readers will spot centipedes and sewer rats, ancient helmets and coins, fish swimming in an underground river, sparkling gems and gleaming metals, fossilized shells and preserved skeletons, and, closest to the surface, burrowing forest animals. The foldout design of the book does make turning the pages a bit awkward. However, unfolding the entire accordion and stretching it out on the floor allow for a more comfortable reading experience. VERDICT This scientific exploration is a good choice for most libraries and provides a captivating snapshot of myriad popular topics, covering everything from plant and animal life, rock formations, and plate tectonics to archaeology, paleontology, and mineralogy. Aspiring scientists will enjoy the journey and want to pore over the pages.—Linda L. Walkins, Saint Joseph Preparatory High School, Boston

Review

"A foldout, concertina format creates a visceral sense of a journey to the center of the Earth.... Zommer’s illustrations are a hive of subterranean activity, and Guillain’s captionlike bursts enthuse about everything readers are seeing."―Publishers Weekly

"The painted, stenciled, and collaged illustrations are full-bleed, and the tones graduate pleasantly from light colors at the surface of the Earth to rich pinks, yellows, and oranges as readers near the Earth's core. The text is informative...including such nuggets as "earthworms are expert recyclers, eating dead plants in the soil." An unusual offering for the young geology nerd."--Kirkus Reviews―
Kirkus Reviews

"The earth science is simple but made glorious by the illustrations, homely and fantastic at once, as in a picture of a subway car, headlights streaming, above a layer of sedimentary rock and, further below, caves with spiky stalactites and stalagmites. The pictures are packed with detail, but each one says adventure—look, diamonds!—as much as education."―

We gifted this to our 4-year old for Christmas. He's been curious about fossils, bones and underground. This book is packed full of information and illustration. We've read over it in detail and in an overview. There's also something exciting about reaching the Earth's core in the spread and flipping the entire book to climb back out the other side. Both 4 and 6-year olds are sprawled out on the floor drawing what they see and simultaneously folding up the book so it looks like "dinosaur teeth" and jumping over it Evel Knievel style. I'd say it's a win on all fronts.

Good for a wide age range. The older kids will appreciate the science. The younger kids will have their imagination sparked. We love it.

This book is awesome. The pages fold up like an accordion and pull out. My three year old loves to look at it like a map. It teaches about the layers of the earth, the elements and soil beneath the streets As well as about drains and where the water goes. Such gorgeous illustrations.

A great book for a quick dive into what we might find under our feet. We used this the first time with our earth science homeschool unit as a fun way to preview the topics we would cover for the semester and the kids like looking through it on their own.

this was a gift for a six-year-old boy. his parents tell me that this was the best book ever for any of their kids (6.8.10). it's beautifully made, very sturdy, and has just the perfect balance between information and intrigue. honestly, i don't know how i can come up with a better gift for the next member in their family. this one is hard to beat.

My 5yo son adores this book. It folds out about 8 feet long going deeper and deeper into the earth toward the core, showing and explaining what is in each layer of the earth. Super informative and beautifully illustrated!

It’s very dark and has only 5 double pages! Not worth the money. Usually Yuval Zommer books are very colourful and nice. My daughter just opened it and closed it in a second 😅 the illustrations are not as flamboyant. It’s totally dark. I wonder why yuval chose this colour palette for kids. The text is placed in dark background making it hard to read! I wouldn’t recommend it at all. All his others books art collectors treasures.
