Women Are The Fiercest Creatures: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 263 ratings

In this wildly addictive novel, three overlooked women take on the charming, manipulative tech CEO who wrote them out of his startup’s history.

Anna Sarnoff is still reeling from her quickie divorce from tech wunderkind Jake Sarnoff. Forced out of the company that she helped Jake build, Anna is trying to pick up the pieces of her life, navigating the waters of solo parenting their two teenage boys and adapting to her new role of ex-wife. To make things more complicated, Jake seems to want her back…and his persuasiveness tempts her to say yes.

Across town, the brilliant and striking Samanta Flores-Walsh, Jake’s college girlfriend, is busy raising her teenage daughter and running her thriving yoga studio. Although their relationship ended years ago, unanswered questions from their time together gnaw at her, and when she learns that Jake is planning to take his billion-dollar company public, she starts to wonder if perhaps it isn’t too late for justice.

Finally, there’s Jake’s much younger new wife, Jessica, who’s struggling to stay afloat as a new mom while her high-profile husband grows increasingly distant.

Set in the wealthy enclaves of Seattle’s tech elite, the lives of these three women grow entangled as long-held secrets are forced to the surface, threatening to destroy their families. Written with razor-sharp intelligence and heart,
Women Are the Fiercest Creatures is a searing look at the complexities of family and the obstacles women navigate in every aspect of their existence.

It's twisty and thought-provoking and so well-drawn. I gobbled it up. Sara Shepard.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Andrea Dunlop has a knack for making deeply flawed characters recognizable and sympathetic and compelling as hell. Maybe you come for the beautiful rich people embroiled in juicy scandals of their own making, but you stay for those characters, their intricate relationships, and their complex motivations in every shade of gray. Great on motherhood, empowered women, and female support roles of all sorts, Women Are the Fiercest Creatures is Dunlop’s best yet.”
Laurie Frankel, author of One, Two, Three and This Is How It Always Is

Women Are the Fiercest Creatures is a stylish, timely, buzz-worthy literary thriller that I tore through with glee. Dunlop brings to life a trio of strong, achingly real female protagonists whose search for truth and meaning in their romantic and professional lives held me spellbound. I loved this book!”
Tara Conklin, author of The Last Romantics and The House Girl

“A well-written story that will leave readers thinking that women are indeed the fiercest creatures.”
Kirkus Reviews

“Dunlop’s latest is a compelling and fascinating tale of performative feminism and the women who suffer under it.”

Such a compelling story !
The perfect book to review right before International Women’s Day Women Are The Fiercest Creatures gives different women in a very successful tech guru’s life a chance at the spotlight – and it is a compelling and propulsive book that hooked me right from the start, I couldn’t read it fast enough, i had to find out what was going on.There’s Anna, his ex-wife, the mother and caretaker of his two tween and teen sons but she was also the lawyer who put her career on the backburner so Jake could put everything in his startup and still have a family life. Additionally she was an unpaid sparrings partner for new ideas, advisor and confidante helping him shape the business into what it is today. Now that the company is gearing up for an IPO she has been replaced true to the cliché by a woman 15 years her junior and now pregnant. Jessica’s life is not what she thought it would be. Her new tech guru husband needs quite a lot of time to himself and she finds herself very alone with stepsons who do not want her in addition to being pregnant. But there’s an additional woman Sam who as a brilliant coder in their college days helped Jake develop his website idea until she was replaced herself and she comes back with bagagge. These three women at first unknowingly and reluctantly come together to confront the man at the center of their intertwined stories with all the unpaid work and energy, ideas and caretaking, he has quite readily taken and in some instances even presented as his own. Confornting how he has played them against each other on the way. Throw in the other women that this story highlights and who are enablers – Jake’s mother Pam or Anna’s friend Bri. Dunlop's characters are fully dimensional and believable, they were so real. And I loved dipping my tow into their world for a wonderful, engaging ride.An interesting picture of modern womanhood, a fast paced novel about empowering women, a thought provoking and intelligent read and a great bookclub pick with loads to unpack and discuss.

I loved this! Every woman was a hero in this story without shying away from the fact that everyone had (and can admit to) their flaws. I won’t spoil the ending but … ahh. It was so good. So many twists and turns and SO creative… great character development. Was a wonderful read.

An excellent debut that explores womanhood, motherhood + relationships. Set in Seattle, the story is about three women navigating motherhood alone.. with two of the women sharing intellectual input in making an app named Strangers the success it is today. CEO/founder Jake Sarano shares links with all three. He’s very self-absorbed, a collector of women and a player with all three. When Strangers is to become an IPO, Jake does not give credit where credit is due. One of the women contacts a reporter who investigates Jake and his company. This follows the three women and their family life.. parenting teenagers, female identity, trust, betrayal, sacrifices and racism.. each with telling secrets of their own. I can’t express enough how the author was able to create such an enlightening story around male dominance/female inequality in Seattle’s tech world, and how these women were able to come out on top with so much being thrown at them. Fascinating + unique. 4 stars — Pub. 3/7/23

This is such a fun read! I tore through it, and it's a wonderful look at the tech scene in Seattle, and the money that comes with it. If you followed, say, Bill and Melinda Gate's divorce with interest, you'll love this.

I’m here for it, Seattle. This author knows her turf. As well as well-played characters. An of-the-moment story set just outside of the Emerald City about three women who are connected to one egotistical tech bro who has conveniently taken credit for his startup while leaving them out of the company’s success.

An easy to for the reader to dislike character, yet his current wife and ex-wife are smitten with him, it’s clear who Jake cares about. Himself and his billions as he readies his company for an IPO. The story centers around his new wife, his ex-wife, and we’re trying to figure out how an ex-girlfriend is part of the picture. What I liked – the three different POVs, how the women are connected to Jake, and how the story unfolds.

I found this story interesting and all the women characters were very well crafted and relatable. However, the story and message didn't quite click for me. I liked the angle of hinting toward Mark Zuckerberg as an example of a driven tech CEO who essentially stole other people's ideas/work to get ahead and build his business. The main character just seemed like a cad or "player" or womanizer though and not inherently bad or mean or evil. Perhaps if he had another layer, it would have resonated more. I found it strange that three smart and capable women were sucked in by this person and did not understand birth control. If they didn't have kids with this uncaring person, each would have chalked it up to a bad relationship choice and walked away. Not sure if this can be described as a feminist story.
