A good read.
4 Stars
A good read.
What I enjoyed most about this book was Virginia Watts over all prose and style. An atmospheric eeriness of isolation makes one think of how one deals with everyday rural life. It would be an under statement to hope for a follow up to this book.

In "Echoes from the Hocker House," Watts has crafted a collection of stories that not only entertains but also resonates. It's a journey through time, a celebration of adolescence and young adulthood, and a testament to the power of well-crafted storytelling. I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates exquisite prose and memorable characters, whose adventures, struggles, and growth are endearing and surprising. Recommended reading for cold winter nights!

I was looking forward to this collection as I've read Watts before. My plan was to peck away at it over the course of a month or so. But after the first story, I read through the night.
Watts' prose is transportive and incredible.

If she wrote a cookbook, I'd read it for the suspense. Fantastic read

The stories in Echoes From the Hocker House are well-rendered and memorable. Many of the characters stayed with me well after I put the book down. Watts is a master of place, time and ambience: the stories are rooted in Appalachia during the 1960's and 70's and there is a haunting nature to them. We often see into the dark place of her characters' minds.

“Echoes from Hocker House” is a haunting and gritty collection of short stories that remind me of Breece D’J Pancake, except with a female point-of-view. And I loved Pancake, so that is saying a lot. There is a solid sense of place (Appalachia) in these stories that joins the macabre with the everyday in a subtle way that holds both tension and surprise. Characters stay with you after you’ve finished, reminding you we’ve all walked the fine line of sanity sometime. Highly recommend.
