Waltzing with the Dragons is the true story of a Vietnamese woman and her Eurasian daughter.Born in 1922 in the north of Vietnam, under French colonial rule, Ly was the daughter of one of the last Mandarins, a childhood friend of Ho Chi Minh. After she rebelled against her family, by refusing an arranged marriage at thirteen, she was sent to live with her father’s best friends, a French couple. It was the beginning of a life-long love affair with French culture and lifestyle. At seventeen, she married a French army officer who, shortly there after, was killed in action. She lived through the Japanese occupation during World War II, escaped her captors and after many adventures, found her way south. From having lost everything, In Cholon (the Chinese quarter of Saigon), she established herself as a successful business- woman under the protection of the gangland bosses who dominated the city in the late forties. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, a doctor in the French army. From this passionate affair, she became pregnant with her only child: Mai-Tâm, her daughter. Her lover having returned to France, she gave birth alone amid the dawning realization that he was not going to come back.Born in Saigon in 1952, Mai-Tâm grew up in the twilight of the French Colonial era , which ended in 1954 with the defeat at Dien Bien Phu by the forces of Ho Chi Minh. A child of mixed race, she did not feel she belonged anywhere, and it was only within her Vietnamese family that she felt loved and protected. During her childhood, she was victim of the increasingly aggressive Vietnam War as well as the disruptive and unhappy relationship of her mother with her second French husband. Her parents sent her to the safety of France in July 1967, where they joined her one year later, after the Têt offensive in 1968.Ly who became Anna and Mai-Tâm who became Juliette demonstrate how strength of character and determination can overcome all adversities.

I was born and raised in Vietnam in 1952 from a Vietnamese mother and a French father during the end of the French Colonial era and the beginning of the American War. I grew up as an only child surrounded by my family and cousins cocooned and protected amidst the war until 1967 at fifteen where my parents sent me to France. My childhood as a mixed race girl in Vietnam had impacted my life and with all my extensive traveling and life abroad, including the United States, Venezuela, Mexico and Brazil, I realized the importance of telling my story and that is how I decided to write it. This is my first book and it took me over 2 years to complete it. Writing about my mother's story and mine was an emotional journey, but helped me to understand her better. It was also therapeutic. Waltzing with the Dragons is in honor to women's courage and strength and for all the immigrants who left everything in order to survive. Now retired in the Southwest of France, I am pursuing my new passion which is writing.

Heartwarming story of a mother and daughter between 1922-1967 in Vietnam
Thoroughly enjoyed the life story of a strong, determined Vietnamese woman from 1922, beginning from her teenage years in North Vietnam under French colonial rule. Reading this book I could feel Ly - Ana's strength, determination and spirit, the love and hardships she experienced living in war torn Vietnam. While reading about her and her daughter Mai Tam's - Juliette's lives I could feel all the emotions they felt and it reminded me how strong the human spirit can be. It was also very interesting to get their perspective of the Vietnam war. Through it all this book was a reminder of how precious life is and how marvelous it is to experience strong love for family and friends. Waltzing with the Dragons was delightful to read.

"Waltzing with the Dragons is the true story of a Vietnamese woman and her Eurasian daughter. Set in Vietnam during the French Colonial Era and the Vietnam War, mother and daughter manage to survive and flee safely to Europe."
In her first novel and memoir, Juliette Triozon tells us about her mother and herself in war-torn Vietnam. It is a captivating read, a story of strong and resilient women, of love, loss and hope. I loved the beautiful descriptions of Vietnam, was moved by the conflicting emotions subtely expressed, and by the fascinating family saga. Can't wait for the next one!

As presents for my friends and family

When I sat down to read “just a few pages” in the few minutes I had for the moment, I found myself immediately drawn into this beautifully written story. I read half the book in that sitting, and the other half the next day. Ms. Triozon’s writing style is rhythmic, and does literally dance you through this amazing telling of her mother’s life and of her own, worlds and circumstances apart from the one I was living at the same time in America. She brought her mother’s story alive by speaking in her voice for the first half of the book. Ms. Triozon so elegantly and believably captures the voice and heart of her mother during the turbulence of her banishment from the family at 13 to her eventual true love and the birth of her daughter, the author. During the second half of the book, “Mai” speaks of her own challenges as the child of mixed race, sent by her parents to France in order to escape the dangers posed by the American-Vietnam war. Leaving everything behind at 15 and going to live in a stranger’s home, and eventually creating a new life for herself is a powerful story of courage and triumph. These two women demonstrate the power of love, instinct, and self-worth to survive the most challenging of circumstances. This is a page turner for the spirit.

Set in Vietnam, spanning multiple decades of mostly war and strife, this book reveals the incredible, inter-generational story of powerful women overcoming war, kidnapping and the separation of loved ones. Anyone interested in the history of the area once known as Indochine/Vietnam will be treated to intimate accounts of the situation as lived by the subjects of the foreign colonizers. A gripping story (or really 2 stories) describing the epic adventures of a special group of strong Vietnamese women as they adapt themselves to the new reality imposed on them (against their will). Together, they learn to survive in the uncertain, grey zones of war time. A different view on influential men of the time pulls back the curtain on some of their relationships and dealings as seen by the women who accompanied them. This book covers a huge range of topics and periods of history. I enjoyed this book and hope there's more to follow from this author.

This book was truly wonderful. I hadn't expected a book about women during the Vietnam war to be so uplifting, but it truly was a testament to the determination and strength of women. It is a mother, daughter story, each with a unique voice. Ms Triozon beautifully illustrates with words the sounds, smell, colors and textures of her extraordinary childhood. It is a well written page-turner, my only complaint is that there isn't a second book to continue the story.

Juliette was able to capture her memories , loves and insights of Vietnam. Her love of her immediate and extended family and friends is so evident in her beautiful writing. I couldn't put the book down. Her book is a breadth of fresh air and I am looking forward to more of her writings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quand la petite histoire rencontre la grande Histoire
Reviewed in France on July 28, 2021

5.0 out of 5 stars A story of courage.

The courage shown by thirteen year old Ly, daughter of a Mandarin, in refusing an arranged marriage and facing the subsequent imposed departure from her parents, was evident throughout her life, in her flight from Japanese occupation, life during the Vietnam war and much else. It is a story of a brave and remarkable woman told by her daughter with pace and excitement that has one eager at every turn to know what follows.
