The Magpie's Nest: A Treasury of Bird Folk Tales Hardcover – Illustrated, June 3, 2019

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

From crowded train stations to quiet woods and from city centres to our own back gardens, birds remind us that nature is everywhere. But do you know which is the king of the birds? Has anyone ever told you how the brave swallow got its forked tail? And what of the owl, who was really a baker’s daughter? Take a look inside The Magpie’s Nest, where a hoard of stories, riddles and rhymes is waiting for you. Suitable for all ages and charmingly illustrated by Lakeland artist Becca Hall, this is an essential collection of stories for all who love the natural world.

Review

"Gems in the new collection include why the robin has a red breast; the wren, king of the birds; why the swallow has a forked tail; the mute swans of Grasmere; the Borrowdale cuckoo; and the owl was a baker's daughter. Alongside riddles and rhymes, there are beautiful, colour and black-and-white hand-drawn illustrations." —West Morland Gazette

Hello! I’m Becca, a Freelance Illustrator! I’m all about bringing joy through my work, and I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with a diverse range of commercial and individual clients on some truly exciting projects.

I graduated from Manchester School of Art in 2014, where I received a First Class Honours Degree, and the Alumni award for illustration, and have been working freelance ever since.

After spending six amazing years back home in the Lake District, I finally decided to chase my lifelong dream of living in Cornwall. So, in the spring of 2020, I packed my bags, said goodbye to the rolling fells, and set up my creative den in this coastal paradise with my 2 Border Terriers, Pippa & Evie!

I’ve got a thing for nature, which often finds its way into my artwork. Growing up in the Lakes, and now living in Cornwall, has only spurred that on further, and I am constantly finding inspiration from the natural world around me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mostly Christian tales
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 27, 2019
Nice enough stories but a lot of them are based around Christianity eg if the three tales about the Robin, two are about Jesus and one is about hell/the Devil. I didn’t expect this and was hoping for more secular stories.
