MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW

"The contrast between notes and experiences of those who navigate this world are exceptionally well done, and will lend to book club discussions and sci-fi reader delight. Libraries and readers seeking a futuristic exploration which examines sleepers of the world and the social and political truths and realities that underlie their motivations will find Hibernaculum replete with a growing horror of realization that awakens, at the end, into a nightmare of manipulation and truth. It will leave readers thinking long after the story's final startling revelations."
DONOVAN'S BOOKSHELF

In an imploding world, time is money, time is trouble, and time is risk. For those who can neither afford or bear to exist 24/7, 365 days a year, time is also a solution.

In Anthony Doyle’s startling debut novel, you’ll step into a world where global voluntary hibernation facilities provide a way out, a chance to step off the status quo carousel.
Hibernaculum takes you into the before, during, and after of this strange new process and posits the question: Do things really look better after a good, long sleep?

A compelling, unsettling glimpse into the world of tomorrow.

I mean, granted, I'm a fast reader, but this book makes me wish I was slower. It is sci fi for those of us who think about how all the mechanisms of the world are interconnected. It is sci fi for those of us who like sci fi that predicts the future. It is sci fi for those of us who like Orwell, Bradbury, Huxley. There's just something about the way the author comes up with these ideas that do not connect, and connects them. And it's not fantasy. There is hard science behind human hibernation, and one of the pioneers in the field writes a response to the book that appears in the front matter. This is definitely an author I am going to follow. The book is an ensemble piece, but I think my favorite character is Seth: he who is about to hibernate, because he wants to know. But, if character Yumi teaches us anything, it's that when you're finished your hibernation... you don't know. Where did you go? Has your mind come back from the journey in the same state as it began it?And, yes, I'm a sucker for the surprise ending. So many thoughts and ideas to stir around in my own mind. Loaned my copy to a friend, and will have to send him his own, so I can have mine back!

I just finished this novel and it’s amazing. I love books that present a very possible future. Yes it’s about climate change but it’s a lot more too. Fascinating and artfully told. Highly recommended.

In an effort to conserve the planet’s resources, what if citizens from around the globe were afforded the option to voluntarily enter hibernation for a set amount of time? As it turns out, this idea appeals to many, from those seeking to help the environment in earnest to people looking for a brief respite from their harsh lives. There are the wealthy who wish to extend their lifespan and of course, the terminally ill hoping for a cure in the near future. Still others view hibernation as a way to reboot their lives and start anew when they emerge.

Parts of the story are epistolary, told through letters written by a former “Sleeper” to her psychiatrist, as well as a rambling blogger about to take the plunge, and the journal entries of a man coping with life while his spouse hibernates for four months (one month longer than the standard duration). In between these are chapters detailing the interior layout and operations of the Hibernaculum as experienced by a journalist during an official tour of the facility, a staff member who cleans the Sleepers in their pods, and occasional design notes from the Hibernaculum’s lead architect. All of these combined deliver a startling, uncomfortable, and thought-provoking view of a near-future Earth in crisis.

I started reading this book on kindle Vella and was immediately intrigued, so I ordered a copy from the publisher. An innovative premise on how to deal with our rapidly warming planet, Doyle weaves his tale in eloquent prose from multiple viewpoints. It is hard to put down, and as the previous reviewer wrote, you may just want to read it again. An important sub set of speculative fiction is Cli-fi, and Hibernaculum is a stellar example of this rapidly growing sub-genre!

Science fiction, but with references to Moby Dick and Ovid. What's not to love? "The only way into the Hibernaculum is along a tunnel that leads from a lush grove... At the end of the tunnel lies a pond eight inches deep. Walkers must wade through this pond in order to enter the Hibernaculum...Once through the threshold, the Walker takes the steps up the admittance hall, into a dimly lit cave..."

If you are looking for exciting and thoughtful science fiction then definitely check this book out.
