Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2-A father and child on a camping trip in the woods create a deep sense of connection with each other and nature. Fisher's digital artwork cleverly frames the story right from the front-end papers, which offer a bird's-eye view of the treetops accentuating the vastness of the forest and the beauty of the outdoors. A lone car on the road suggests that the experience will be intimate. As Daddy and child hike, cross bridges, fish, and enjoy the evening fireflies, visual and textual clues suggest that shared family traditions are being passed down from Pop-Pop to Daddy, and then Daddy to child. Written in first person from the perspective of an inquisitive child, the tone is meditative, and the pacing is leisurely. The child wonders whether they are potentially traversing the same spaces and feeling the same appreciation for the surroundings that Pop-Pop and Daddy did on previous trips. Softly defined artwork enhances the sense of calm and belonging. A swirling leaf design motif running throughout lends a magical quality to the forest, and a brief scene alludes to grief and loss, acknowledging the missing grandfather, and normalizing feeling sad about that loss. All family members are Black, and in text and in illustration, the child is not specifically gendered, allowing for an inclusive interpretation. VERDICT A recommended purchase for sharing one-on-one, with a generational continuity camping theme and as a gentle treatment for addressing loss of a grandparent.-Eva Thaler-Sroussiα(c) Copyright 2011. Review

“…This potent, poetic story is complemented by Fisher’s.... delicate touch, conveying the small pleasures of the great outdoors as well as moments of sadness and the importance of giving oneself permission to sit with sadness. Tender and affirming, (Dad) lets the protagonist know that showing emotion is OK—a valuable lesson for young readers coping with grief.”―Kirkus Review

This book tells the story of the main character and his father on a camping trip, while the father reminisces on his own childhood memories of camping with his own father. Through the two different timelines, we see the common thread of multigenerational love and appreciation of nature. Nadia Fisher's illustrations capture the serenity and beauty of the outdoor landscapes perfectly, and the lyrical text by Pierce Freelon sets a mood of peace, healing, and love.

Daddy and Me Side by Side is a sweet connection between fathers and sons. It shows the importance of their influence on one another and how it trickles down generationally. Makes for a lovely read, especially when dealing with grief or even for Father’s Day.

A father and son on a camping and fishing trip to the place the father did the same with his own father in this tender and loving story of bonding, experiencing healthy grief, and honoring the power of traditions. It still feels refreshing to read about the process of a father and building emotional connection. It’s even better to witness the shared but different grief between losing a parent and a grandparent. I love that we get to experience both. It’s invaluable for children to see that adults and kids can process their grief together this way. Nadia Fisher does an amazing job with illustrating this story that goes back and forth in time and has to depict two father and son stories that take place in the same setting without confusing readers. Her illustrations also beautifully balance the moments of motion and stillness. Whether or not children are grieving a loss, this is a lovely picture book full of heart and an important illustration of the many faceted aspects of loss and emotional resilience.

As I read this story, I was reminded of the grief my son went through when his grandpa died. This book addresses our need to allow ourselves to let those emotions out while celebrating the person's life. It also speaks of the father-son bond and the traditions they create, passing down to the next generation.

This lovely story was a hit with my outdoor-loving kids! They loved the father and son hiking together, having special parent-child time. The nature illustrations are vibrant and encourage readers to want to get outside themselves. The story and art together show the strong bond between the characters and the love of father to son. Sometimes nature's brilliance and silence can encourage us to open up about our feelings or to reflect on our own lives, and this happens here when our young narrator shares he misses his late grandfather, who also used to hike in the same woods with the father when he was a boy. A winner for Father's Day or as a gift for nature-loving kids.

Daddy & Me, Side by Side is a sweet story about a father and son making memories on a camping trip. With each activity they do, such as hiking through the woods, jumping over logs, listening to frogs, and fishing, their bond strengthens. Along the way, they remember Pop-Pop, the boy's grandfather, and how, when Daddy was a boy, he went on the same adventure with his father. The book is nicely illustrated with an eye-catching cover. Overall, this book would be a great choice for Father's Day.

This is a quiet book that explores the lovingly close relationship of a child and his father as they camp together and recall the grandfather who is no longer with them. The lyrical narrative and gentle style of this story are paired with illustrations that conjure up a feeling of nature and peace. A great choice for any child who is going through grief or who has big feelings about family and loss.

When a young dad and his son go camping, they find comfort in the memories they share of the boy's grandfather. Side by side they journey through the woods doing the same activities the dad had done with his father. They speak about their grief in a way that evokes healing, not sadness. Fisher's illustrations are as lovely and luminous as fireflies, as the pair bond and grow closer through their memories. An important book to share with children that normalizes speaking about grief. Highly recommended!
