JAMES BOND GOES HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH SMERSH IN A BID TO SECURE A KEY PIECE OF SOVIET INTELLIGENCE
SMERSH, the Russian intelligence unit whose acronym stands for “Death to Spies,” is hell-bent on destroying Special Agent James Bond.
His death would deal a catastrophic hammer blow to the heart of the British Secret Service.
The lure? A beautiful woman who needs 007’s help. Tatiana Romanova is a Russian spy who promises to hand over the prized Spektor decoding machine if Bond aids her defection. Bond suspects a trap but can’t resist the opportunity to give the British the upper hand in a chilling new front of the Cold War.
So begins a deadly game of bluff and double bluff, with Bond a marked man as he enters the murky world of Balkan espionage.

About the Author
Ian Lancaster Fleming was born in London in 1908. His first job was at Reuters news agency, after which he worked briefly as a stockbroker before working in Naval Intelligence during World War Two. His first novel, Casino Royale, was published in 1953 and was an instant success. Fleming went on to write thirteen other Bond books as well as two works of nonfiction and the children’s classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The Bond books have earned praise from figures such as Raymond Chandler, who called Fleming “the most forceful and driving writer of thrillers in England” and President Kennedy, who named From Russia with Love as one of his favorite books. The books inspired a hugely successful series of film adaptations that began in 1962 with the release of Dr. No. He was married to Ann O'Neill, with whom he had a son, Caspar. He died in 1964.

About the author
Ian Fleming was a British author and journalist. His first novel, Casino Royale (1953), introduced spy hero, James Bond, agent 007, to the world. It was the first of fourteen James Bond books which have gone on to sell over 60 million copies worldwide and be translated into 20 languages. Beginning with the movie adaptation of Dr No in 1961, the series also sparked the longest-running film franchise in history. Both Fleming and his fictional counterpart have become synonymous with style, glamour and thrilling adventures, as well as universally recognised phrases such as “My name’s Bond, James Bond” and “shaken and not stirred”.
Fleming was born in London in 1908. In the 1930s he worked at Reuters news agency before joining Naval Intelligence as an officer during the Second World War. His talent for writing fast and engaging prose, along with his knowledge of espionage and his fertile imagination led to the creation of James Bond, arguably one of the most-famous fictional characters of all time. He also wrote children’s classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Fleming was married to Ann Rothermere with whom he had a son, Caspar. He died in 1964.

It seems the story is all about style and setting with very little action until near the end. There’s so many clunky parts in the plot, like their journey through the rat filled cellar to spy on the Russians, with the periscope? Lol. How would Russians not notice it after they did the sweep of the room? One of several implausible parts It just seemed that the book loved itself because it was taking place in an exotic, foreign country with James Bond as the MC. He really doesn’t do much in the story again until near the end . VERY hard to get into because it’s a very long set up with tedious passages of bond, and Darko going from one place to another.
Yawn.
Avoid this edition of the book, though. In the front of the book, it says--
"This book was written at a time when terms and attitudes which might be considered offensive by modern readers were commonplace.
A number of updates have been made in this edition, while keeping as close as possible to the original text and the period in which it is set."
Do not support this type of censorship. Vote with your wallet against the altering of Fleming's original manuscript. Search out and buy the unaltered book that Fleming wrote.
