A mind-bending time heist novel that will appeal to fans of V.E. Schwab's 'Shades of Magic' series.

"There was no murder . . . Because they never existed."

The Geneva branch of Interpol - the international agency tasked with policing magic and the arcane arts - is where careers go to die. Action is rare as Switzerland banned magic seven hundred years ago. That's how Agent Jackson Burnett likes it.

But then reports of an explosion lead Jackson to the home of businessman Bernard Bouchon. What's there is unfathomable: The family and their possessions have vanished into ash.

Jackson's enigmatic new partner Luca Tami, a blind Talent able to perform magic, suspects powerful supernatural forces are at play. The family weren't killed . . . they've been erased from time. With all traces of the family disappearing, the case is hours away from being forgotten.

How can Jackson solve a crime no one remembers happening? He must find a way to remember. He must discover who is behind the spell and why. Dangerous magics are in use, and it's clear those controlling them won't let anyone stand in their way.

Bunn is one of my favorite writers, and I was looking forward to this book. It is not one of his best. First, the flow is kind of jerky and it is not always easy to tell why the characters do what they do, or how things work. Then, the book is about ancient magic, which is treated as amoral. That is, the same magic is used by the good guys and the bad guys. There are spells and rituals and "casting of runes" which is highly reminiscent of witchcraft. It is not what I expected from a Christian writer.

I am a fan of Davis Bunn and have read most of his books and look forward to his next one. I hope this was about good vs evil, but centered around magic; I am not sure. I liked the way the three characters became trusting and good friends. I liked the read and it kept my interest. I usually only read Christian books so you can judge my review by that fact.

Although not a genre I enjoy reading, Davis Bunn writes excellent books, so I read this one. It’s exciting and action packed from beginning to end. An Interpol agent and friends use magic…instead of guns to fight evil. I enjoyed it.

If you're like me, you read everything you can get your hands on by Davis Bunn - regardless of the genre. Full disclosure - I am a serious fan. That said, this was a different genre from my usual reading habits, bubbling over and spinning away with magic and fantasy. I'd call it a thriller - suspense with a fantastical edge. I'd bet fans of Harry Potter would be into this. The characters are very real and, dare I say, 'normal'? The setting is the Europe of today - but.. Not. So very not. This was a departure for me - and I think of the author - and I couldn't put it down. And it read like there may be more to come. Sure hope so.

It is a shame that the film may never be made, but Davis Bunn has produced a magical treasure of a book. In his typical style, the author helps the reader sense the story and the characters. The depth of the descriptions brings the characters to life in our minds even if we cannot see them on the screen. Intrigue, romance, magic and the classic good versus evil pot are intertwined to keep the reader turning pages or taping the screen from start to finish. This one really should be a movie!

Interesting plot and characters however details flushed out more would’ve made this better. Mostly with respect to the magic in the world of magic.

A great yarn about a time when man and magic exist together but as enemies. Three friends unite. Will they have the foresight and strength to fulfill their quest? Five stars. A great Davis Bunn novel.

I am amazed at the work and creativity it took to put this story together. I enjoyed it. Loved the 'adrenaline rush' it provided. Really liked the principle characters as well. A good read if you like something different.
