Kate is a neuroscientist who covets logic and order, unless she's sleeping with her married lab director, and then logic goes out the window. So does her orderly life in Manhattan when she's fired over the affair and Kate's mother presses her to accept responsibility for her fifteen-year-old nephew, Teague, an orchid child who hears voices and talks to trees but rarely people.

To salvage her career, Kate agrees to conduct a study in West Ireland where hostile townsfolk rebuff her study of their historically high rate of schizophrenia and a local chief Druid identifies Teague's odd perceptions as the gift of second sight, thrusting a bewildered Kate on a trail of madness, magic, and armed rebellion that leads to her own grandparents, who were banished as traitors from the same town.

When a confrontation with the chief Druid endangers Teague's life, Kate lands at the intersection of ancient Celtic mysticism and 21st century neurodiversity, where the act of witnessing old wounds can heal suffering in both past and present - even hers, if she can accept the limits of science and the power of ancestral ties.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Victoria Costello artfully weaves together an intimate family saga that spans continents and centuries while reminding us that the deep ties that bind souls together have the capacity to supersede time and space, and — when understood and nurtured — the power to illuminate and heal multigenerational wounds." — Rudy Ruiz, author of Valley of Shadows and The Resurrection of Fulgencio Ramirez.

"
Orchid Child is first and foremost a wonderful story, engaging and interesting from beginning to end. But there's a bonus: neuroscience, epigenetics, topics relevant to our times. A beautiful and smart book." — Laura Pritchett, Pen USA Award-winning author of five novels, including Stars Go Blue and the forthcoming Three Keys.

"A beautifully told story, with richly drawn characters, that seamlessly braids the competing preoccupations of our age, from neuroscience to the ancient myths and tacit laws from which modern culture evolved."
— Simon Van Booy, author of twelve novels, including The Night Held Many Stars and The Presence of Absence, and the editor of three volumes of philosophy.

"
Orchid Child tells a boldly magical story. It will break your heart just a little, yet leave you healed, empowered, and reconnected to awe." — Jacqueline Haskins, author of a memoir of diabetes, Kickass Healthy LADA.

"Orchid Child" is a tale of love and hatred, family and ghosts, science and mysticism, all skilfully woven together. While the story and the characters are deeply rooted in reality, there is also this otherworldly message that not all things can be explained by science, and that sometimes we just have to change our perspective and see the world through a different lens, may it be faith, fate or hope." —
Christina Coletta, NetGalley Review.

"With masterful prose and lyrical storytelling,
Orchid Child will transport you back to Ireland as you explore one family's struggle for healing and redemption over several decades." — WritersnAuthors.com review.

"Orchid Child explores mental/emotional uniqueness and neurodiversity from both a medical and a grounded metaphysical approach, filled with humanity and compassion. I loved this book and couldn't put it down as the story lines wove together toward a deeply satisfying conclusion."
— Kay Taylor, author of Soul Path Way.

"An Irish American family saga that deftly reaches into the history of the Irish people to locate the psyche and spirit that ensured their survival on both sides of the Atlantic." —
Rick Bleiwiess, author of the Pignon Scorbion & Barbershop Detective series.

From the Author

My current writing space is a cozy loft, big enough for my desk and a small bookshelf. It gives me a gorgeous view of Southern Oregon's Rogue Valley. After feeding my cats, two Maine Coon sisters named Luna and Venus who run the house, and drinking two cups of coffee, but before I start writing, I try to spend twenty minutes meditating at the ancestral altar I've erected in the attic. Then I sit at my desk and hopefully I write what wants to be written that day.

Orchid Child is my debut novel. And it's no exaggeration to say that it took ten years to write. I look forward to hearing what readers have to say about it.

Victoria Costello's latest book, Orchid Child blends history, mystery, science, fantasy, and romance to imagine a tragedy-plagued, Irish American family's youngest member halting the chain of suffering that came before him by tapping his neurodiversity and the ancient wisdom of his Celtic ancestors. Partly autobiographical, in writing Orchid Child, Victoria Costello drew on her own experience as a neurodiverse woman, her genealogy, and the highs and lows of raising two wonderful, now-grown sons as a single mom.

Orchid Child reflects the author's fascination with ancestry; how the legacies of those who came before us can appear in our lives in mysterious ways, and the challenges faced by second and third generation descendants of immigrants who wish to understand and reclaim their ancestry. As author Rudy Ruiz wrote in his review of Orchid Child, "Costello artfully weaves together an intimate family saga that spans continents and centuries while reminding us that the deep ties that bind souls together have the capacity to supersede time and space, and – when understood and nurtured – the power to illuminate and heal multigenerational wounds."

Before turning to fiction, Victoria Costello earned Emmy and American Society of Journalists & Authors Awards for her writing on the environment, neuroscience and psychology. Her feature articles have appeared in Scientific American MIND, Brain World, and Psychology Today. She has blogged on family mental health and parenting for HuffingtonPost, Mamapedia, PsychCentral, All About Psychology, Tween Parent, DivineCaroline, and Yahoo Health & Wellness News.

In a memoir titled A Lethal Inheritance, published by Prometheus Books in 2012, Costello tells parallel personal and scientific stories. She details three generations of mental illness and addiction in her family and offers new research into possible causes and treatments of child and adult mental disorders, along with strategies for prevention. Andrew Solomon, National Book Award winning author of Noonday Demon, An Atlas of Depression, called A Lethal Inheritance "lucid," and "invaluable." UNDARK Magazine EIC, Deborah Blum said of Costello's memoir, "Read it because the lessons are so valuable. Read it because it's a story so beautifully told."

For the past two years Victoria Costello's has added teaching to her creative journey. With classes offered in person at Southern Oregon University, and online through WritingWorkshops.com, Costello offers a mixed genre approach to Life Writing involving the theory and craft of both memoir and autobiographical fiction, aka autofiction. With these workshops and courses she seeks to help writers tell their stories by getting at the greater truths they seek by tapping both memory and imagination. Her guidebook, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Writing a Memoir remains a favorite resource for writers newly tackling their life stories.

This genre-straddling novel centers on an American neuroscientist named Kate who flees professional scandal at her New York lab for what was supposed to be a calmer environment in small-town Ireland, where she is to co-direct a study on an unusually high incidence of schizophrenia. She drags along her newly acquired charge Teague, a nephew who himself suffers from bipolar disease. His mother, our protagonist's sister, was a casualty of drug addiction. It doesn't take long for Teague's symptoms, which include aggressive voices inside his head, to reappear, in part because of his determination to ditch his meds, but along the way, we discover, perhaps there's more to it. Teague is one of the special ones, not uncommon in Ireland, who have second sight that enables them to see things, past and future, that others cannot. Kate, the scientist, resists believing such supernatural balderdash (as does this reader), until one by one, circumstances emerge that paint a plausible picture of Teague's powers and the connection of said powers to their family history. Indeed, the novel alternates between the current story in Ireland with earlier family history in the same town and then in New York where ancestors have fled during a violent confrontation during a particularly bitter period of the Irish troubles. The past quite literally reaches from the grave to grip the present. I enjoyed the combination of Kate's determination to find the truth (a mystery story). with the historical sweep of the multi-generational family story. The supernatural parts were handled deftly, without any insistence that skeptics, either in the story or among the readership, buy everything to enjoy the drive of a satisfying narrative.

Orchid Child was a good read for me personally. I had the chance to read through this book as a read along with a book touring group.

This is the story of Kate, who is one of our MC's. Kate is a neuroscientist who has left the US because of an affair with a married man. I did not like that part as I am married and that does not resonate at all with me as a reader. Kate heads to Ireland with her nephew, Teaque. Teaque has a label as a mentally ill person as he hears voices and is paranoid. I hate when people get labeled(have experience with this personally) so I also understand and hated this part of the story.

Teaque is actually having experiences related to ancient occultism in Ireland, where his 'symptoms' start to get worse over time. So, this implies that he is not mentally ill as everyone thinks and he has been 'mislabeled'. Another thing that unfortunately happens a lot in the world of doctors and the medical fields.

Then Teaque falls into the hands of Finn, the enigmatic occult leader of a group of druids and he also is very loud about the fact that he hates head doctors and that type of science. He just wants his home to not have anything to do with head doctoring. Teaque, who is now with his Aunt Kate obviously likes Finn a lot because he doesn't have a father. Finn kind of becomes Teaque's surrogate father for a little while Teaque is hanging around the community boys that he meets and also Finn.

The ending is understandable as it wraps things up nicely. The writing is pretty good with no real gaps in the time travel in this story, although at times the time travel chapters then the normal chapters of resent day make it a bit confusing to the reader. I recommend this one to readers who like a good time travel book and also a bit of a mystery read to find out what happens to the couple in the past and how that affects the future;)

This is one of the books I have been looking to read for a very long time! This book is a story of a neuroscientist studying aspects of psychiatry while caring for a nephew with a psychiatric diagnosis (and more)! These topics separately are of interest to me and together....

The story totally gels - includes intrigue, mystery, etc. A great book for people comfortable reading about various things with psychiatry and family.

This book had my attention as soon as I read the synopsis. I was so excited to read this book. I loved the idea and plot of the book. This is one of the best books I have read this year. I couldn't put the book down at all. I'm so glad that I picked it up and read it. This something that caught my attention when I read the synopsis "orchid child who hears voices and talks to trees but rarely people"

I found this book a bit slow to get into, but when it does, hold on to your hats! Maybe because I am half Irish, originally came from NYC, and at the moment planning my first trip to Ireland to the very area where this book is set has something to do with the impact, but if you are interested in psychology and a fascinating study that was actually done and is one of the elements in this novel, I highly recommend it. The Orchid Child is not just the name of this book, but an actual phenomenon.

Just finished hearing Orchid Child on Audible
It spoke to me deeply and I thank you Victoria Costello as well as Ms Benson, who brought the words so eloquently to my ears. Well done!

Engaging narrative of fully drawn characters that pulled me into this fascinating story of generational struggles. Following the family and the study of schizophrenia in Ballymor Ireland was a sensitive and personal ride and holds helpful knowledge for all.

This book was not my normal genre. It is more of realistic/historical fiction with Irish folklore/mysticism. I really enjoyed Victoria Costello's writing style. It drew me in and kept me interested from the beginning. It is told in two timelines, 2002 with Teagan and Kate and the past with their grandparents. I enjoyed the historical insights I got on Ireland's tumultuous past, the folklore, and the modern neuroscience. Overall, this was a great read!

📗 ORCHID CHILD

AUTHOR- Victoria Costello
PUBLISHER- Liminal Books (June 13, 2023)
RATING-⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Orchid Child captivates readers with its captivating narrative, keeping them engaged and intrigued from start to finish. However, it offers an additional treat with its exploration of neuroscience, epigenetics, and other timely subjects. This book is a remarkable blend of beauty and intellect.

Kate, a neuroscientist known for her affinity towards logic and order, found herself entangled in a chaotic web when she embarked on a forbidden affair with her married lab director. Her meticulously organized life in Manhattan crumbled when the affair was exposed, leading to her dismissal. Adding to the upheaval, Kate's mother urged her to take responsibility for her fifteen-year-old nephew, Teague, a unique individual with an ethereal disposition who conversed with trees more readily than with people, often hearing voices that others couldn't perceive.

Kate's journey became a transformative exploration, challenging her preconceived notions and forcing her to confront the complexities of the human mind and spirit. In her quest to reconcile the realms of logic and mysticism, she discovered the potential for healing, growth, and acceptance by bridging the gaps between past and present, science and spirituality, and the bonds that connect generations.
