The Signifying Monkey: A Theory of African American Literary Criticism 25 ANVth Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
Examining the ancient poetry and myths found in African, Latin American, and Caribbean culture, Gates uncovers a unique system for interpretation and a powerful vernacular tradition that black slaves brought with them to the New World. Exploring the process of signification in black American life and literature by analyzing the transmission and revision of various signifying figures, Gates provides an extended analysis of what he calls the "Talking Book," a central trope in early slave narratives that virtually defines the tradition of black American letters. Gates uses this critical framework to examine several major works of African-American literature--including Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, and Ishmael Reed's Mumbo Jumbo--revealing how these works signify on the black tradition and on each other.
This superb 25th-Anniversary Edition features a new preface by Gates that reflects on the impact of the book and its relevance for today's society as well as a new afterword written by noted critic W. T. J. Mitchell.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2022Signifying Monkey describes important themes throughout black literature. These themes are all a result of the practice of signifying within black culture. This book also shows how signifying came from Africa through the middle passage of slavery into the literary writing of the black community. So it is an important text to understand more clearly the elements, themes, and major types in black literature.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2018I didn't buy Mr. Black A Billionaire, and I'm reading Fire and Fury now, just received it today. I love Helen Hurdt Books, I have one more of Helen's Book too purchase.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2016Dr. Gates sets the scene of his intellectual exploration and tells a rollicking tale of discovery in the first section. I think I will need to acquire Ishmael Reed's Mumbo Jumbo to really appreciate the second part.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2019A classic, an outstanding analysis of African American literature and culture.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2013Well-kept book, like new! I've searched this book for months in the libraries and online but this was the lowest price I've ever found!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2020Very insightful text that proposes a theory of African American literary criticism as a whole. This is dense and I will need to reread. However the kindle version did not include the afterword that my classmates had in their physical copies so be cautious

1.0 out of 5 stars INCOMPATÍVEL COM O DISPOSITIVO
O tema do livro me interessa bastante. O autor é um grande nome na teoria crítica literária. Porém não pude ler após minha compra em formato e-book porque o livro é incompatível com meu dispositivo Kindle. Investimento perdido. :(

1.0 out of 5 stars Não comprem
Produto ofertado para leitura em kindle porém não é compatível com o kindle. Não é possível ler no computador, través do site, somente em celular. Que tipo de leitura é feita para celular? Péssima loja para se comprar livros. Me arrependi ....
