Survival is everything. So is love.

Ara hasn’t seen another human in months―not since her father disappeared. As the only female to survive a devastating virus, her world is haunted by the ghosts of her former life. Her mother. Her sister.

Kaden and his crew live by a code: stay alert, stay alive. When they catch Ara trying to steal from them, they are furious―and confused. She’s the first girl they’ve seen in three years. And while Kaden knows taking her captive is wrong, he tells himself it’s for her protection. That the only place she’ll be safe is with the clan, his new home. The world of men.

However, Ara is determined to discover the truth about the plague, and nothing will stop her. And as Kaden becomes mesmerized by her will and beauty, he realizes that he will do anything to help her, even if it tears their worlds apart.

But the world of men isn’t prepared for The Last She, and the odyssey to save themselves means Kayden and Ara have to leave behind everything they’ve come to know. To burn it down to the ground. In the ashes they can start again.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 11 Up-Ara is the only female survivor of a plague that has killed most of the population. Alone for the first time in three years after losing her father, she is taken prisoner by a group of men. Their leader, Kaden, claims he is holding Ara prisoner to protect her and takes her to join the larger clan led by Gabriel. Upon realizing that Gabriel might take Ara for himself, Kaden agrees to help Ara escape. When their escape attempt fails, they face greater dangers than before. This is a fast-paced, easy-to-read story, but depictions of gender dynamics are problematic. Throughout the story, Ara is a captive with varying levels of freedom for her safety. Ara's autonomy is violated many times as she is often tied up, expected to behave and dress in a traditionally feminine manner, and coerced into a marriage. Despite these violations, Ara focuses on her feelings and attraction to Kaden, even when he acts as her jailer. The implied threat of sexual violence is addressed only when it conveniences the plot, usually when male characters want Ara to obey, and she is sexually assaulted by the main antagonist. Her trauma is minimally addressed; instead, the focus is on her romantic relationship with Kaden. Some readers will be able to look past these issues and enjoy the novel for its premise, action, and romance. However sensitivity is required as some readers may be triggered by the content. The main characters are white. VERDICT Consider other depictions of postapocalyptic gender dynamics such as City of Beasts by Corrie Wang.-Kaetlyn Phillips, Yorkton, Sask.α(c) Copyright 2011. A stunning read!I loved the concept of this story, but I wasn’t sure what to expect. I ended up reading it within two days because I couldn’t stop. One of my new favorites for young adult!!I immediately fell in love with Ara and the other characters. They felt real. They were regularly faced with horrible, impossible choices—and I felt myself conflicted with them. There were dark themes in this book, and Nelson handled them in a way that felt raw and real, but also strangely hopeful. I was rooting for these characters through and through. I even found myself understanding the bad guys. I hated them so much I wanted to crawl into the pages to kill them, but I also understood them.Overall, this is such a well-written, incredible book. I am already anxious for the next one. Nelson is absolutely a talent to watch. Now I just need this to become a movie!!!

5/5 STARS

I loved this YA dystopian book! It is an apocalyptic story that reminded me a little of The Walking Dead without the zombies. It had everything you could want: enemies to lovers, betrayal, action/adventure, suspense, & survival.

Ara is the last girl alive after a plague wipes out all the women in the world. She relies on her survival skills to get by until she is caught. Now she has more than just the environment to survive as men try to figure out what to do with her.

It was well written and I totally agree that it was one of Wattpad’s best books! I devoured it in a day. I will be reading to sequel for sure!

I listed to the audible version of this book. I normally listen to audio books while completing various house tasks. While listening I volunteered to complete some of my wife's chores so I could have an excuse to keep listening, so suffice to say I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The tale is gripping from first to last and the parts of Ara and Kaden are well read. The story itself is witty at times, tense at others and really pulls you into the world. I can't wait for the next book!

I really enjoyed the audiobook for The Last She, so much so that I bought the physical copy for my shelves. It’s a post apocalyptic novel but it’s not like every other novel out there. I really enjoyed the MC’s and have the second novel as well. Excited for her to make a 3rd out soon!

I loved where the story is going but it felt like there were so many details left out, that would normally help get you excited for the twists and turns. There were many points where I wanted to know more about the characters to become more attached to them but all you get is a " and we talked about our past lives all night long" it makes it hard to get to know a character when we aren't led into those conversations to understand why these characters do what they do. You've also not let in on to much of what they plan on private. I understand that it may be used to get you thinking oo maybe they'll do this or that, but I just left me annoyed there wasn't more dialogue. The premise of the book was interesting but could have been executed better. I might give the second book a chance but if it's in the same style I won't read another 300 pages of not enough.

Post-apocalyptic world, great characters, fast moving plot and strong dialog makes this a true Ly enjoyable read. I’m not a fast reader, but couldn’t put this down and finished it in 2 days.
