Though modern day "Druidry" is completely un-related to the Druid's of antiquity, it is still intriguing nonetheless. Ross Nichol's "The Book of Druidry" is a classic. This book is important to own if anyone cares to know anything about certain aspects of Freemasonry, Theosophy, and Occult movements; what they believed, and how they influenced those around them while constantly reshaping Western thought. After all, Gardner would not be known if he were not friends with Ross Nichols :)

This is written by Ross Nichols who is the founder of bringing druidism back to life. He was great friends with Gerald gardener which I find to be very interesting. Nichols went on with druidism and Gardner went on developing Gardnerian area in Wicca. they were the best of friends but they went their separate ways because they believed differently. Ross Nichols road this book right before he died and it has a lot of great information.

Very detailed overview of Druidry from its possible beginnings through age of darkness to renaissance. He goes into important authors, former chief Druids of OBOD, important trees, mythology. solar and agricultural celebrations, important monolith circles and more. This man is extremely knowledgeable. When explaining culture he compares and contrasts with Egyptian, Indian and more. I found myself having to reread certain passages to understand what he was saying. I wouldn't describe this as light reading. His measurements and insights into Stonehenge are overwhelming. Mr. Nichols does use the word "probably" frequently to string together some assumptions. I'm not knowledgeable enough to critique him but this book seems to be relevant three decades after his death. Many thanks to John Matthews and Phillip Carr-Gomm for pulling together Ross Nichols manuscripts, hand-written notes and whatever to assemble this book. This book is probably as important to the foundation of Druidism as 'Witchcraft Today " by Gerald Gardner is to Wicca. Naturally these two were friends.

Modern Druidry owes a lot to Ross Nichols. He removed the masonic ties and brought paganism back into the path. Inspiring and educating many followers of the modern Druidic Revival - we all owe a great debt of gratitude to this man. And his lessons live on through Philip Carr-Gomm. Everyone should have this book in their collection.

Love this book. It's a must read for those interested in Druidry and it's impact on the way modern Druids relate to the past.

There are different opinions about Druidry regarding history, accuracy and applicability for today's post-modern world. The fact is, druidry is not very well known. To get any facts about the Druids of the past, one must rely on archaeology and what contemporaries of that time period wrote. Since Celtic society was not too keen on keeping written records when the Druids ruled the roost, a lot of our information concerning them comes from second hand, indirect experiences. Perhaps the only exception to this rule would be Julius Caesar, who had to deal with the politics of Druidism while trying to conquer the Celtic lands for Rome and had to deal with them in an almost direct way.

With that said, Druidry is perhaps one of the most romanticized group of people known to mankind. A little after the Renaissance period of Europe, some British antiquarians were experimenting with a time that Great Britain had a golden age and longed to return there. Every attempt to find scant knowledge of Druidry was made and sure enough, some was even invented to make a complete history. Some authorities have decided to fill in the blanks, so to speak and this resulted in a movement known today as the Druid Revival Movement. The Order of Druids that the author, Ross Nichols, was exposed to had it's roots in this revival. This does explain why a lot of Druids in America are somewhat disappointed with the book. A lot of archaeology evidence that we have now that supplies us with information regarding the Druids of the ancient past simply did not exist at the time Nichols was alive.

Does this make Revival Druidry wrong in of itself? By no means!

The book covers the history and the romance of being a Druid and does a good and thorough job of showing the applicability and the liturgy (rituals) of Druidism today because ultimately, the "romance" period is a part of the history of Druidism today. Besides that, there is still a lot of accurate information in this book that modern scholarship does support. Regardless, this does make Revival Druidry a valid path, though it might not be the exact same path that the ancestors took from such a long time ago. In other words, this book is very useful.

The book I got from Amazon is a hardcover, but needs to be held in order that the book does not close on itself. It does so every time I lay it down flat. The print, font and formatting is not easy on the eyes, as it is single space, but the font size is medium to large. There are a lot of not so easy places to read as well, as this book does come out kind of like a scholarly work. It is dry in places, though Nichols did a good job in keeping the book interesting enough for me to go through it. It is for this reason that I am giving it a three star rating instead of four. Had the book been typed in 1.5 spacing and the scholarship (of that time) been toned down a little; or that the book lays flat better, I would have given this book a 4 to a 5 star rating.

American "Neo-Druids," i.e. Druids in ADF and Keltria, won't like the information presented in this book, because these groups prefer the "updated" scholarship. However, my concern is that we are becoming quite rash and hasty with our distaste because for all the things we do know about the Druids nowadays, there is still a lot we cannot be for certain and neo-druids are robbing themselves of traditions that have been tried and true for centuries now... Perhaps, we can find ways to forgive the shortcomings (if there are any shortcomings to forgive) of those who came before us, sparking and igniting the fires we call modern Druidry today.
