Review
In the shadows of the move to a globalized economy, in places its uncritical partisans would rather not look, an equally new and equally globalized set of phenomena has arisen. In this pathbreaking book, Nils Gilman, Jesse Goldhammer, and Steven Weber have gone far beyond registering the existence of 'deviant globalization.' They have theorized it, and shown that what crops up at the intersection of ethical disparity and regulatory inefficiency is now a permanent feature of global affairs. Observers of the world will benefit from this insight, while teachers and students will gratefully thank the editors for compiling the evidence in one place. - Samuel Moyn, Columbia University, author of The Last Utopia: Human Rights in History
This carefully curated selection of provocative and accessible essays helps us come to grips with the dark underside of the global economy, and sheds new light on what we can and should do about it. - Peter Andreas, Professor of Political Science and International Studies, Watson Institute for International Studies, Brown University

About the author
Jesse Goldhammer was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. Trained in political theory, Jesse has a longstanding interest in the genealogy of social, economic, and political power. He has taught in several universities, worked in the information technology sector, and is now a partner in a transnational management consulting firm. His first book, "The Headless Republic," examined the role of violence and sacrifice in French intellectual and political life. His most recent book, "Deviant Globalization," explores the underlying forces that enable a wide variety of illicit global flows, including drugs, weapons, and toxic waste.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2016Deviant Globalization answers many of the questions that arise when you have touched on but do not completely understand illicit markets and the downside of globalization. This book lays out many of the problems that come with a more interconnected world and what happens when entrepreneurs take the grey path to financial success. This book was incredibly easy to read being part analysis and part humanized storytelling.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2011This book provided a compilation of well-written and thought-provoking articles about different underground economies and the people who suffer in the hands of the few who make big profits.
Writers like Sean Flynn and Johann Hari have developed a truly captivating journalistic style that will keep you riveted.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2012Nils Gilman is my favorite intellectual, and this is a big broad topic. There are many unique ideas and ways of looking at the global economy in this book. Definitely recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2015Expanded my understanding about the underground economy tremendously
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2016No problems!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2019Well written collection of well documented examples of negative effects of globalization. Some, like human organ trade are spoken of in hushed tones, but seldom see the light of day. Others like human trafficking seem to be on the front pages of periodicals with sad regularity. The biggest surprise to me was the ugly underbelly of the Dubai economy, and the somewhat tragic lives of imported workers there. (Having visited Dubai in the late 90's, I thought it to be a rather modern city living in relative peace & harmony....Apparently not so!)
Overall a good read, and a good book to pass along to enlighten others.

I used this book as my main source when writing a essay on the negative aspects of globalization. It is great for academic work and because of the way it is written, it is also interesting reading for any person who are interested in understanding the deviant side of our world in a greater extent. The book has for me opened a interest for a field which needs a lot more work.
