This book: “A is for Authentic not Straight As” resonates within the hearts and minds of anyone who has struggled in their identity as an overachiever in some capacity at any point in their lives. The author, Ms. Jeanie Chang, uses her life and library of professional training and experiences in a practical, straightforward, relatable, transparent and effective way so that any person (student, young adult, professional and beyond) can find a space to be acknowledged, validated, comforted yet at the same time equipped with practical advice in this memoir with a mental health edge.

This books helps the reader find self awareness, and even transports them back to similar moments in their upbringing and guide them to come to an better understanding to heal from those past experiences —finding freedom and joy in their lives.

While her own experience as a daughter of accomplished immigrant parents of Korean descent is highlighted, this book can reach anyone who has struggled in their journey to achieve and their desires to be validated by parental figures or even society.

She depicts various relatable experiences candidly and provides practical and concrete advice and wisdom in a clear fashion to help guide the reader. It is truly apparent that the book comes from a genuine place where Ms. Chang wants the reader to understand, heal, and grow resiliently through past experiences and emerge as a more balanced person that is at peace with who they are. Her compassionate voice guides you throughout the book.

There are several chapters that I reread and there are quotes that are highlighted in the book itself that are gems. After reading this book the reader is equipped with skills to overcome past, current and future struggles, stressors and pressures while still recognizing the gratitude and blessings of one’s life. Ms. Chang encourages the reader to be brave to want to discover and know who you are and be okay with the process independent of your own unique upbringing experience.

Funny and educational book for all of the Asian Communities! Great read and resource!

For the Korean-American community, this is a groundbreaking book. Our culture is notorious for our silent suffering. As a shame based culture, discussion of inner doubts and struggles is discouraged, to say the least. For some members, this might be, at times, a difficult book to read, as it will shed new light on past experiences.

In here, Jeanie has provided a template for others to start their own journey of self-reflection. The first part will help others process their own childhoods. The second and third parts address ways for someone to consider possible changes they can make in their present self-perception and surroundings.

At the very least, some people with similar struggles or questions will be able to read her story and find some relief. Hopefully, the book will also encourage some in the East Asian and/or immigrant communities to seek culturally-sensitive mental health resources. It's not shameful to have emotional struggles. In this day and age, the help is out there.

With the recent Atlanta shooting that took the lives of four older Korean American women, I read this book hoping to find solace and grieve for them. Jeanie addresses the sacrifice her parents made to immigrate to America and raise their children here. I was able to imagine that these victims’ lives were not lost in vain but brought forth opportunites for all Asian Americans to use their voice and fight against racism and hate. Like Jeanie’s parents, these women gave path to freedom to be our authentic selves to their children and grandchildren. But, it is up to us to take those opportunities and create a safe space instead of silently accepting the atrocities we experience living in America as Asian Americans. Jeanie’s book gives us the tools and resources to address our mental health needs and learn to celebrate our differences instead of trying to be perfect to please the people around us.

Through an open heart, Jeanie Chang shares with us her personal journey of self-reflection, which becomes a way for us to learn more about how we can tune into our own personal experiences in order to discover our authentic selves. I found myself highlighting several pieces of wisdom throughout this book as Jeanie weaved in her professional expertise as a mental health clinician as well as insights from her own life experiences. The relatable stories of her upbringing had me nodding along in understanding and sincere appreciation because our emotions and mental health are typically not discussed in our culture. Her informed perspectives and voice are welcomed, and I look forward to learning more from the next books in her series.

Thank you Jeanie Chang for writing this book and sharing your personal story, boldly going where many Asians and Asian-Americans fear to go - mental health and building healthy emotional frameworks. As a child of Taiwanese and Chinese immigrant parents, her story very much resonated with me. Jeanie's struggle to live up to narrowly focused, yet high parental expectations, rings all too true for many of us. The fact that she grew from that experience and now helps counsel others on that journey through her practice just speaks to her generosity, courage and compassion. Jeanie's book is a must read for young Asian-Americans seeking to find their authentic voice or for those who care about and for them!

Thank you Jeanie for openly shares from your private life, personally and honestly.

I found it so helpful that the author expressed her feelings from childhood to adulthood because we Asian Americans don't get much practice talking about our feelings, so we don't know how to. For the author to put herself out there, I believe many readers will benefit from her examples. And it's so helpful to know that we're not alone when we experience the pressure to be perfect, the pains of parents with unrealistic expectations, the challenges of finding fulfilling careers, and that life's journey of personal discovery and growth is so worth it all.
