This books helps the reader find self awareness, and even transports them back to similar moments in their upbringing and guide them to come to an better understanding to heal from those past experiences —finding freedom and joy in their lives.
While her own experience as a daughter of accomplished immigrant parents of Korean descent is highlighted, this book can reach anyone who has struggled in their journey to achieve and their desires to be validated by parental figures or even society.
She depicts various relatable experiences candidly and provides practical and concrete advice and wisdom in a clear fashion to help guide the reader. It is truly apparent that the book comes from a genuine place where Ms. Chang wants the reader to understand, heal, and grow resiliently through past experiences and emerge as a more balanced person that is at peace with who they are. Her compassionate voice guides you throughout the book.
There are several chapters that I reread and there are quotes that are highlighted in the book itself that are gems. After reading this book the reader is equipped with skills to overcome past, current and future struggles, stressors and pressures while still recognizing the gratitude and blessings of one’s life. Ms. Chang encourages the reader to be brave to want to discover and know who you are and be okay with the process independent of your own unique upbringing experience.
In here, Jeanie has provided a template for others to start their own journey of self-reflection. The first part will help others process their own childhoods. The second and third parts address ways for someone to consider possible changes they can make in their present self-perception and surroundings.
At the very least, some people with similar struggles or questions will be able to read her story and find some relief. Hopefully, the book will also encourage some in the East Asian and/or immigrant communities to seek culturally-sensitive mental health resources. It's not shameful to have emotional struggles. In this day and age, the help is out there.
I found it so helpful that the author expressed her feelings from childhood to adulthood because we Asian Americans don't get much practice talking about our feelings, so we don't know how to. For the author to put herself out there, I believe many readers will benefit from her examples. And it's so helpful to know that we're not alone when we experience the pressure to be perfect, the pains of parents with unrealistic expectations, the challenges of finding fulfilling careers, and that life's journey of personal discovery and growth is so worth it all.
