Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

Our cultural upbringing powerfully impacts how we navigate our lives and careers. In The Visibility Mindset: How Asian American Leaders Create Opportunities and Push Past Barriers, Chao and Lam deliver an engaging and enlightening treatment of how Asian American professional leaders have powered through the obstacles in their way.

The book explores a variety of myths, stereotypes, and problems faced by Asian American professionals―including the bamboo ceiling and the model minority myth―and how they’ve operated to exclude Asians from the ranks of leadership for decades. It empowers you to overcome many of these issues and walks you through how to elevate your career as you work to open doors that may otherwise remain closed to you.

The Visibility Mindset offers straightforward exercises and strategies, alongside many real-life leadership examples from various industries, to help you navigate the most common pitfalls and challenges faced by Asian American leaders as they move forward in their careers. The book explores how to work with others effectively and how to handle microaggressions, how to leverage the power of networking, and how to manage and mentor others while seeking out mentorship for yourself.

You’ll also discover how to integrate leading diversity, equity, and inclusion practices into your leadership and development progression.

Even though this book is geared toward the AAPI community, it is a great read for really anyone trying to navigate the corporate world. Too often personal growth books read like a bad late-night infomercial -- full of promises and little substance that you can actually implement -- but Chao and Lam keep a very casual and direct tone throughout, which made this book read like a conversation or a small masterclass. I loved that!

Not only was it a relaxing read, but each chapter introduces a unique perspective and then provides very pragmatic advise to actually implement a change. It provides a wonderful foundation to reach the next level in an increasingly "personal brand" world. I think this would be a wonderful book for a recent graduate to read as they enter the workforce and anyone who might be feeling "stuck" -- particularly if they are Asian American.

This book provides insights into an environment where we accept rather than push the limits to success. A helpful guide for Asian Americans who felt that they lacked visibility in the workplace to be able to have the tools to be seen. Chapters on Improving Yourself, Finding Your Own Voice, Building Your Personal Brand, Creating Your Own Career Path, Prioritizing Your Mental Health provided practice tips that will help me as a leader.

I am not an Asian American Leader, but I strive to be an Ally and a supporter.

🤔 This book was helpful for me to understand some concepts around cultural issues, as well as stories of lived experience.
✅ I also appreciated the resources to learn more about how to be a better ally in the workplace.

The message is geared towards AAPI, but applicable to everyone striving in their careers or life goals. The book is inspirational and the anecdotes are insightful!

I'm so grateful that I was able to receive an early copy of this book to read and review, and I absolutely loved it! I thought it was so incredible that both Bernice and Jessica switch off each chapter and draw on their own experiences to inform their advice. This book is not like other self-help books that just give the reader a laundry list of things to do. This book tells the stories of REAL Asian American professionals through interviews, anecdotes, and more. This book draws on important aspects of the Asian identity, like family life, religion, culture, and societal expectations. Creating a book tailored to the Asian American professional like this one is something that I'm sure has been done before, but this book is written by such wonderful and creative people that I believe it is the best one out there. The Visibility Mindset is a MUST-READ for any young Asian Americans entering the workforce. As a college student nearing graduation, this book was immensely helpful in informing me about what I want my goals and boundaries to be when I enter the workforce post-graduation. I highly recommend this book to any other students in a similar situation to mine, or Asian American professionals trying to break into a creative field for the first time!

Many of us, particularly Asians, are taught to work hard and attain "perfect" results (i.e. that 100% test score). The reality is that in Corporate America there are no pre-set tests or exams... and it's up to you to find ways to add exceptional value, develop networks to drive that value creation, and to promote the value created. And.. your ability to add value, network, and promote your personal successes & brand are found in this wonderful book, The Visibility Mindset. Bernice Chao and Jesslin Lam provide real-world examples, insightful interviews with successful leaders, and actionable recommendations (including easy to use templates) that will set you on a path for career and personal growth! Highly Recommended!
