"Supremely humane.... Kay leaves us with a broad landscape of sweet tolerance and familial love." —The New York Times Book Review

In her starkly beautiful and wholly unexpected tale, Jackie Kay delves into the most intimate workings of the human heart and mind and offers a triumphant tale of loving deception and lasting devotion.

The death of legendary jazz trumpeter Joss Moody exposes an extraordinary secret, one that enrages his adopted son, Colman, leading him to collude with a tabloid journalist. Besieged by the press, his widow Millie flees to a remote Scottish village, where she seeks solace in memories of their marriage. The reminiscences of those who knew Joss Moody render a moving portrait of a shared life founded on an intricate lie, one that preserved a rare, unconditional love.

Review

WINNER OF THE 1998 GUARDIAN FICTION PRIZE

"It has a humanity and sympathy which engaged me from start to finish. And its energy and directness made it a treat to read. . . . [
Trumpet makes] us see that people apparently very unlike ourselves are in fact very much like ourselves. . . . Love is not usually such a triumphant idea in modern writing, but I think Jackie Kay makes it believably and vividly so."
-- Ian Jack,
Granta

"Kay spins a love story, a fairy tale, and a psychological thriller out of one deep secret. She has a great gift for delving inside sundry souls, making poetry of their quirks. At its best, her prose ripples like jazz and brims with exquisite insights."
-- Andrea Ashworth, author of
Once in a House on Fire

"Jackie Kay makes the unbelievable gloriously real. For a first novel this is remarkably assured, full of melody and tension. Each character is given a singing part, bouncing notes and harmonies off each other as Joss's story is teasingly, movingly revealed. ...
Trumpet is a love story and a lament, beautifully told." -- Eithne Farry, Time Out

"A hypnotic story...about the walls between what is known and what is secret--. Spare, haunting, dreamlike."---
Time

"Splendid...[Kay's] imaginative leaps in story and language will remind some readers of a masterful jazz solo."---
The San Francisco Chronicle

I am constantly forcing other people to read this novel- the writing is tight and amazing, the characters are compelling and as the former partner of a transman, this gave a partner a voice that I found realistic and sad and wonderful. It's hard to find voices for transpeople and their partners in quality literature, but this met my needs to feel recognized and also should be counted as a contemporary classic novel. I've shared this book with multiple book-lovers and every single one has loved it (in fact, I'm not sure that my copy came back to me last time....). It may be time to buy this for myself again.

Jackie Kay writes like the poet she is. I read this book for my book club. Due to the subject matter, we had a very spirited discussion. I have recommended this book to anyone who likes good writing, loves music and has an open mind.

This extraordinary and sensuous novel is told primarily from the point of view of a son who is disgraced by his father's behavior and seeks revenge. This tale of secrets and betrayal is brilliantly handled. Every detail and every symbol has significance. The prose reads like a jazz composition.

Trumpet is the current "read" for my Book Club. I can't wait for our discussion because I'm thinking we will all give it two thumbs up. (I SO LOVED ROGER EBERT. That last comment is dedicated to him.) The story line, the writing style, the format, the EVERYTHING ...Trumpet is GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This may be a tad biased because I was required to read this book for school, & I generally have a distaste for being assigned books I don't get to choose and having to write literary analysis on them. This book was okay and somewhat thought provoking, but ultimately I felt like there was really no point to it. I felt like at the end, nothing had really happened. The only real twist is at the beginning and after that, I felt like I was waiting through the entire book for something to happen. I wouldn't say it's bad, but It isn't my taste.

Jackie Kay's heritage gives a unique perspective to her novels. 'Trumpet' tells a wonderful story full of twists and turns all told with warmth and insight. A diverse range of characters entranced me as the story unfolded. I am now working my way through all her books.

This story starts off strange, but it is a very interesting read. I wonder if it is based on the life of a real jazz musician. If you know somoene is is suffering from a crisis in identifying with their gender this book tackles that issue.

I got this book for an English course and I just love it. It's a beautiful story that probes the depths of grief, love, and acceptance. I would recommend this book to pretty much anyone with an interest in gender/sexuality studies, psychology, or good love stories.

This is an intriguing novel, well worth reading. It is a bit too long: some of the narrators add nothing to the story, and could have been obviated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling story, and beautifully written
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 26, 2021
A novel that should dispel the myth that poets don’t write good books – 5 Stars

The story opens with the death of Joss Stone. Lauded as one of the eminent jazz musicians of the period, the mild-mannered man was adored by his wife, and liked and respected by many. With his death though came the discovery that, biologically, Joss was female…

The mixture of themes, characters, and the quality of the writing made this a compelling read. The aftermath of Joss Stone’s death touches each of the characters in different ways: Joss’ widow is driven from her home by the newspaper hacks, his son struggles to come to terms with his father’s failure to confide in him, and a journalist sees the opportunity to make money by selling the story. With chapters told from these and other characters’ points of view, Kay shows a masterful understanding of the emotional turmoil caused by bereavement.

This certainly isn’t a book solely about death or transgender issues, but takes a much wider look at what contributes to our sense of self, and how society assigns identity labels. Gender, location, career, ethnicity, family, and adoption are all included here. It’s an engaging story, but what makes it special is Kay’s writing: Each chapter is written in a way that gives the character’s story a unique voice. Fierce and stark in places, gentle and poetic in others, every emotion is expressed not only through the meaning of the words but also by their rhythm and how they sound.

Overall: An engaging story that is questioning, non-judgmental and, above all, beautifully written.

This book not only tells a story which will campure you until the last page, but also fascinates with its way of story telling that will -like a puzzle- give you different perspectives, hints and clues until you can make up your own image of who was Joss Moody.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story based on an original idea
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 16, 2024
I liked the idea that the whole story starts after the main character is dead. Also, that it is told in sequence by different people, who provide different perspectives. The theme of jazz in the background is exciting and as I play the trumpet myself, there was a connection, at least on the music side.
