Silly Doggy Paperback – January 1, 2013

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 58 ratings

Join Lily and her brand new pet-a lost, loveable, and very large bear that she mistakes as a doggy-as they share a fantastic day together. When Lily looks out of her bedroom window, she finds the best surprise ever: her very own lost dog! But this is no normal puppy, this is actually a lost, lovable bear! Nevertheless, Lily and Doggy quickly become fast friends. Sure Doggy doesn't eat his dog food, can't do any dog tricks, and never ever does what Lily tells him, but this rambunctious "pup" still steals Lily's heart. However, Lily's mommy knows that every lost dog has a home of their own with people who miss them dearly. So Lily creates a "Found Dog" poster about their fantastic day together. But what happens if someone actually claims Doggy?

My 3 year old daughter loves this book, and the one that came after it called Naughty Kitty. We have borrowed this from the library several times, and she never gets tired of it, so we ordered it to give her for Christmas. We have a niece who was just born who has the same name as the little girl in the story, so we bought a copy for her, too.
This is a very cute story about a little girl named Lily who desperately wants a dog, and is thrilled when she finds one in her garden one morning. Of course, the reader knows that Lily's doggy is really a bear, but Lily insists in taking him for walks, playing fetch, and trying to teach him tricks. The pictures and story are sweet and funny, and it holds up to numerous readings, which is always important from the parent side!

This book is by far and away my daughter’s favorite book. We have to read it before naptime and bed. Honestly, we probably read it at least ten times a day. Even with excessive repetition this book is still a delight. It is silly and charming. An absolute must have for any child. ❤️

Every once in a while I come across a book that I go out and buy for every single one of my friends-with-young-children. This is one of those books. Lily is a little girl who wants a pet, and boy! does she find one in her backyard! A bear who escaped from the zoo becomes her "Silly Doggy!" He's terrible at tricks, doesn't listen, and refuses to eat the dog food that she puts out for him, but she clearly loves him and wants to keep him. Unfortunately, her mother says no, and a "found" poster leads to his return to the zoo. Not to worry, however, because the ending will cheer you up again!

Adam Stower tells a sweet story filled with optimism and one little girl's irrepressibly wonderful outlook on life. His illustrations -- particularly the faces of both Lily and her "silly Doggy" -- are impossibly heartwarming. HIGHLY recommended for anyone who loves children, animals, happiness, imagination, unexpected endings, or life in general!

Silly Doggy is a delightful story. As a librarian and mom, I first read it to my kids without sharing the pictures. I told them to imagine the story. After I read it all, I reread it and allowed them to view the pictures. It's a game changer to see the "doggy" is not just a big, mischievous dog... Had a great discussion with kids on how sometimes books need words AND pictures to get their true meaning across. Kids love it.

Silly Doggy is my 2 year old daughter's favourite book, we read it every night and have done since last xmas. It is now mid October and we are not bored of reading it to her as it is such an endearing story and it brings her so much joy every bedtime. I bought it as I was looking for stories for younger children with strong female protagonists who are not princesses, it would seem that there are very few books that fit this description. Silly Doggy's Lily is a courageous young girl who is not afraid to throw her scarf around the neck of a bear escaped from the zoo and look after him until his owners are found. It also addresses her feelings of loss after 'Doggy' is returned to the zoo. It is an important book to my child and to our family.

We bought the German translation because we instantly liked the book. As we also wanted to buy an English book, I suggested simply getting the same book, why take the chance? And I must say...the original is WAY better, the translation is a bit lackluster, doesn't stay true to the Original ("unless you ask him nicely" becomes "except in emergencies" and the translation for doggy has NOTHING to do with anything a German kid would call a dog).
So in conclusion: buy the original if you can, buy the translation if you need :)
(btw: the German version comes with a big poster, so there's that :=)
