I have loved this book and the one it follows, A God Against the Gods, since a friend gave them to me for my birthday one year, back in the seventies. I have been enthralled with ancient Egypt all my life, and these books make you feel as if you are there, and by the end you feel as if you know these people, all of whom really lived, most of them with the names given in the books. Although you can read this as a stand alone book, you will truly enjoy it more if you read the first one first. Is it exactly what happened? Who knows, but the author was someone who knew well the things that drive people in high places. Dr Hawas has proven that Tutankhamon was Akhenaton's son, through DNA, not his brother, but I imagine that wouldn't really change much of what happened in the book, or why the author speculated as to how things unfolded. Highly recommend this book.

I chose to read both this and A God against the gods in order to get a different perspective on Allen Drury, the author my AAUW Literary Study Group was reading recently.

Drury brings ancient Egypt to life with a telling of his tale from the point of view of all his characters.

Very well written and a great sequel. I felt like I was actually there, again, in ancient Egypt.

This was a good read; follow-up to A God Against The Gods. Book was in pretty good condition.

I understand the concept of used books, as I purchase them frequently. This particular book was VERY used - looked it had been living in the bottom of a gym bag. Not happy.

I found this book by chance as I was looking for some more Egyptian novels, the book is as old as I am & I loved it. Great take on the story of Akhenaten, and although confusing as some of his characters have since been proven to be related in other ways, I.e Akhenaten & Tutankhamen being brothers and know it's known they were father & son., it's a great take on what might have happened back then, after all nobody will ever know what actually happened.
The book is alive in its narration,I love the way there are no specific chapters, but it is divided by the main characters speaking as a first person through the events, from pages of dialogue to just a sentence & back again, each telling their version of the events they are seeing. 5 stars are not enough, I would give it 100.
