Book Description

Once seen as a punk joke, The Ramones eventually came to be taken seriously, influencing almost every garage rocker that succeeded them. The story of the band from Queens is the paradigm rock saga - a litany of drugs, fallings-out, financial catastrophes, inter-band rivalries, bad management and death. This is a warts-and-all rock biography.

The Ramones’ place in the rock pantheon is now assured. But there does persist an image of the band as dumb, cartoonish, playing the same songs over and over forever. Even today writers can dismiss them as a crude, one-trick pony. A recent book on the history of rock complained that their first album was poorly recorded with dreadful sound quality; a way of having a cheap shot while also having to, reluctantly, acknowledge their place in and contribution to, the history of rock music.

Everett True does a fine job of mythbusting, with a sensitive and nuanced account of the band. All the expected biographical bases are covered. True doesn’t shy away from criticising them, collectively or individually, but he gives the reader plenty of insights and genuine appreciation of the band and their music. Just one example: his discussion of ‘Rockaway Beach’. He correctly identifies the song’s sixties inspirations, quotes Legs McNeil’s depiction of Rockaway Beach’s awfulness, then concludes by saying, “But that was the genius of the Ramones: they could find beauty in the unlikeliest of spots”. True thereby places them in an artistic tradition which focuses on, even glamorises, the demi-monde. Like, for instance, the writer Tobias Wolff, the Ramones can find, and create for us, beauty in ugliness.

True also quotes from many, many other writers, showing how at the time and subsequently, the band has had a huge influence. He has interviewed a raft of people, then and more recently, to garner a range of opinions and observations. At 341 pages of text it’s a mighty tome, exhaustive. If you have any interest in the Ramones you must buy this book.

The greatest thing about this book is that complements my love for The Ramones. I have adored this band since even before I met them at a promotion for Pleasant Dreams back before I was even officially a teenager. Joey spoke to me, ok? He asked ME MY name before signing MY copy of Pleasant Dreams. Dee Dee was there, ok? The autographed album is right in of front of me, right now, my most treasured possession, not for sale at any price. And I hate to work, ok? That's why I love this book, Everett True is obviously a kindred spirit. Sure, he deifies The Ramones, as he damn well should. They're gods. He reveres them as the gods they are but still reveals them as human and subsequently cursed with human as well as artistic flaws. There's a great quote in the book from former Sire Records boss, Seymour Stein where he says, "A band like The Ramones don't come along once in a lifetime; they come along once." It's weird, but that quote taps into why this book is so sad. This thing, this era, this epoch known as The Ramones has come and gone. Fortunately, we will all continue to live in a world where it happened, and like all things in the past it will always have happened. To use the cliché, no one can take it away from me, from us even, I mean those experiences of bouncing around to Teenage Lobotomy, preteen to twenty years post-teen. And it's obvious that True sees the importance of that and he really does a good job of expressing it. And he also does a good job of showing us what the experience was like for the band members themselves, as human beings, when they were doing all the work that it took to bring so much pure joy to so many people around the world. If they hadn't toured themselves to death I wouldn't have gotten to see them live. And God bless CJ for being there to help them continue. I hope all the Ramone survivors check on Amazon and see this review so they can know how thankful I am for how much happiness they've given me. When Joey died I dreamed that he came to say goodbye to me on his way to heaven. He said, `I just wanted to say goodbye to my biggest fans.' Even though it was just a dream it seems like the kind of thing he would have really done. I woke up crying and it can still make me cry. That image I had of him in my dream and the actual real man who asked me my name back in '81, what I'm saying is, the Joey in the book and MY Joey are totally aligned and I think True proves himself as an excellent rock'n'roll journalist by capturing his essence so well. This book is really sad, too. Nostalgia is part of it, I suppose, but that's really an oversimplification. All things must pass, but for now, I still feel twelve-years-old when I'm bouncing around with The Ramones on.

After reading this book I have a much deeper appreciation of the Ramones. I never knew Dee Dee was a junkie, that he wrote the majority of songs, nor that Joey spent time in a mental institution and that not all the rhythm guitars in Ramones records were exclusively played by Johnny. The best part of this book is the first half which details their formation and rise to fame (but sadly not fortune). The storytelling of the band's early days in NYC at CBGB's is great, culminating in their '76 appearance in the UK that should have made them mega-stars. But the book tells heartbreaking tales of misfortune and just plain bad luck that plagued the band throughout their career. As you read the book you can;t help root for these bunch of working-class reprobates that consistently made some of the best lp's in rock history and scratch your head why they never had that million selling monster hit that they could retire on. Lord knows they tried and tried. Album after album, producer after producer with no luck. The book covers each album and tour in detail along with some amazing stories, such as Johnny running off with Joey's fiancee(!) and band members barely talking with each other as albums were made. However the book lacks a perspective from a music historian's point of view. Such as dissecting the bands records and recordings in detail in an attempt to pinpoint out why they never had that smash hit single or lp. Many Ramones records (even the great ones) often lacked something, whether it was lack of backing vocals, better arrangements, studio wizardry or minor experimentation (save for their magnificent Spector produced End Of The Century lp). Many Ramones records are simply great when they could have been awesome stone cold classics but in-depth musical retrospective analysis is not offered much here an that's my biggest disappointment with this book. The latter half of the book gets rather boring: album, tour, album, tour but the period of decline and eventual death of Joey (and later Johnny and Dee Dee) are heartbreakingly sad for a band that worked so hard for so many years. Some great photos are included. The one with Joey and three girls is absolutely hilarious. Overall a very good book worth reading but not this is not the ultimate Ramones story. The one take away from the book is that the Ramones put the fun from classic 60's records back into mainstream rock in the 70's and that influence is still felt today. There will never be another band like them.

I've been a lifelong Ramones fan and bought this to read on a recent holiday.
One of the best music based books I've read and kudos to the author, Everett True, a journalist I have admired since my teens. Highly recommended

Un portrait de famille relativement lucide (même si parfois le mythe Ramones est bien entretenu) + une analyse musicale assez objective + des photos cool = un documentaire captivant.
