Every weekday morning, 12-year-old Gilah takes the same public bus to her school in Washington, DC, and this year, she's finally allowed to ride alone. On the very first day, the bus swerves too close to a bicyclist, and Gilah finds the courage to alert the driver to stop the bus. Without a bike, 13-year-old Guillermo starts riding the H4 with Gilah. This is the story of a Salvadoran-American boy who is a poet, a neuro-diverse Jewish girl who loves breakdancing, and how they navigate the detours of their families, their friendship, and their lives. “A well-written and engaging tale of a new friendship featuring a compelling cast.” – Kirkus starred review, 2022

I purchased this copy for my mother to gift to my daughter. I will also be buying a copy for myself and can’t wait to read it! Here is what my mother had to say after reading “Detour Ahead:” This book was a great read!!  It has so many aspects to it.  Two different cultures, two different sexes, tweens navigating the space between childhood and adulthood, the beginning of a friendship, taking on challenges and emerging victorious, problem solving and learning that there is more than one way to achieve what you want.
All of that and it is a very sweet book.  During these craziest of times we live in, it is soo nice to enjoy something with the "volume" turned down.  This book is an oasis, and yet there are lessons to be learned.

I bought this book for my middle school-aged son, but I was decided to read it, too. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the world of these characters. They were delightful and inspiring to get to know. I loved that Gilah, the neurodiverse character, explores both the challenges and up-sides of having a brain that works differently from "typical" kids. I learned a lot by imagining myself in her shoes.

Story of friendship that develops between a Jewish neuro-atypical girl and a Salvadoran-American boy. People are represented in this book that are not often seen in books for young adults. The emotions are universal for young teens so it should appeal to a diverse group of readers. It is told in both free verse poetry and prose, all in the voices of the characters which makes it engaging.

I absolutely loved the unique characters, Guillermo and Gilah. The book had an excellent rhythm and flow between the two perspectives. If you are looking for a heartwarming story about navigating new friendships and adolescence, you will enjoy Detour Ahead. It is perfect for any middle grade classroom or family!

What a lovely novel. So heartwarming, often funny, and overall inspiring. Loved the characters and the back and forth viewpoints from each of the main storytellers. A wonderful read for kids and adults.

Gilah’s thoughtful internal monologue will touch readers’ hearts and expand their understanding of someone who must work hard to interpret social cues. Her friend Guillermo is a poet, who writes his story in verse. Their alternating voices share a beautiful story of friendship which begins on a Metrobus in Washington, DC. Detour Ahead is a gem of a novel.

Loved this story told by two different voices and in two different styles. It’s heartfelt and engaging. Definitely a book for any classroom library or home!!
