1997.
Scarclaw Fell. The body of teenager Tom Jeffries is found at an outward bound centre. Verdict? Misadventure. But not everyone is convinced. And the truth of what happened in the beautiful but eerie fell is locked in the memories of the tight-knit group of friends who embarked on that fateful trip, and the flimsy testimony of those living nearby.

2017. Enter elusive investigative journalist Scott King, whose podcast examinations of complicated cases have rivalled the success of Serial, with his concealed identity making him a cult internet figure. In a series of six interviews, King attempts to work out how the dynamics of a group of idle teenagers conspired with the sinister legends surrounding the fell to result in Jeffries’ mysterious death. And who’s to blame…

As every interview unveils a new revelation, you’ll be forced to work out for yourself how Tom Jeffries died, and who is telling the truth.

A chilling, unpredictable and startling thriller, Six Stories is also a classic murder mystery with a modern twist, and a devastating ending.

Six Stories is as original as they come. This book is told as if it were a podcast and conducts interviews with individuals who were close to a crime. Each "chapter" gives a new point of view on what could have happened to Tom Jeffries, a teenager who was found dead in Scarclaw Fell. In the beginning, I wasn't sure if I would like this book because I haven't read anything like it - ever. But the more in depth it became, and the closer I grew towards the individuals in this story, the more I started to really enjoy it. This book kind of reads like a true crime novel (if you're into that sort of book), but isn't as opened and shut in terms of the killer. Readers will actually begin putting the clues together themselves as they read this and come to their own conclusions on what may have happened to Tom. All and all, it's really cool! Now, as I mentioned it sort of readers like a true crime novel, but this is NOT what the book is. This is a work of FICTION (even though it FEELS like a real murder case). So don't worry if you aren't a true crime readers because that's not what the book is.

Anyway, I really enjoyed reading this one. As the interviews/story progressed I found myself becoming more enthralled in the case. I guess you could say that I became hooked on it. I simply did not want to put the book down. I think many readers will agree with me here.

With that, I'll give you a short run down of the book so you will know what to expect. Six Stories is told in a podcast which is then transcribed into words for this novel. Is it a real podcast? I don't think so. But if it were I would become an instant listener. Seth King, the narrator of the story, interviews 6 people (hence the name, Six Stories) who were somehow close to the case of Tom Jeffries. One is a father of a teenager who was within the click of friends, the others were actual friends and acquaintances of him. Each one shares their views of Tom, what he was like, and their opinions of what could have happened to him. The point of it all was not so much to open up old wounds for the people involved, but to find clarity and closure into what could have happened. At the end of the novel, readers will find out what actually happened. Some may be able to take the clues from the book to come to their own conclusions of what happened (kind of like myself), but if you don't, it is eventually told.

If you are a hard core mystery lover- this is the PERFECT novel for you. If you aren't and are just looking for something original, then I would recommend it to you. I think many will really enjoy it.

1997. Scarclaw Fell. The body of teenager Tom Jeffries is found. Verdict? Misadventure. But not everyone is convinced. The truth about what really happened in Scarclaw Fell lies in the memories of the tight-knit group of friends.

2017. Enter elusive investigative journalist Scott King. In a series of six interviews, King attempts to work out how the dynamics of a group of idle teenagers conspired with the sinister legends surrounding the fell to result in Jeffries’ mysterious death. Six interviews, which one is true?

This story is told in the style of a podcast and has been much compared to Serial, which I haven’t listened to myself, but plan to get around to at some point before the end of the year. After reading this novel, I HAVE to. Scott King focuses his podcasts on difficult and often mysterious criminal cases and decides to take on Tom Jeffries’ death, 20 years after the original events. Tom’s body is found one year after his disappearance at Scarclaw Fell by the land owners son, Harry. The circumstances in which Harry and his two friends come to find the body are equally as bizarre as the following story itself – Spooky noises in the night, stormy weather and difficult to tame dogs who are intent on leading them to the hidden entity they feel is watching them.

For a short book of only 225 pages, Matt Wesolowski did a wonderful job of creating and developing the characters of all those possibly involved with Jeffries’ death. The atmosphere between the teenagers and hints of a supernatural monster, made for an intriguing read throughout. I found myself wondering at times whether his death really was human inflicted or if indeed the work of the enigmatic monster, Nana Wrack, was at play. A somewhat shady death and a possible supernatural entity – HOOKED.

Each podcast focuses on the perspective of someone who was in Tom’s life at the time he disappeared. A group leader and several of the teenagers in his ‘friend’ group. I’ll use the term ‘friend’ lightly since it comes to light that most of the others didn’t actually like Tom all that much and at some point felt wronged by him or in some cases were bullied by him. This gives more than one person motive – if it was murder. It tells us that not many would really miss him – easier to let go over time. Yet, no one can really seem to get this strange case out there minds.

I will admit that whilst reading through this book, it often felt a bit more like a true crime story being told, such as the kind you might here on shows like Dateline, as opposed to a work of fiction. I was wary of a gimmicky feel or typical outcome. Six Stories proved me wrong. I found myself becoming more and more invested in this ‘case’ with every page and new ‘podcast’ release. Before I started reading, I was somewhat apprehensive since I’m not usually a huge fan of podcasts (I have a terrible wandering mind) and was worried I’d have the same issue with the same concept even on paper. It was NOT any trouble to read at all and I was so relieved. Once I figured out who was who and the story really got going, it was pretty easy to race through this story whilst lapping up every detail and trying to ‘solve’ the case myself.

Six Stories is now the second great debut novel I’ve read this year (‘One of Us Is Lying’ being the other). I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves crime fiction, mystery and a hint of the unusual. I’ll certainly be looking out for more of Matt Wesolowski’s work in the future!

The book was written well enough and the ending was unexpected but it was bit drawn out for me. Gave it 4 stars only because it’s not a personal favorite of mine.

Back in 1996, fifteen year old Tom Jeffries disappears. A year later, his body is found. Was it an accident or something more sinister? Now, 20 years on, former journalist Scott King tries to reach out to the people who knew Tom best and who were around when he disappeared. Six people. Six stories. Six perspectives.

This is a hard one to review as I don't want to give anything away. At its core, we have a traditional whodunnit but with a modern twist. When you read a lot of books in the same genre and you suddenly stumble upon something as unique as this, it's like a breath of fresh air.

I realised from the start I had something special in my hands. I wanted to savour every page, go slow but ended up devouring it like a big yummy piece of chocolate cake. Not literally, obviously.

Told as a series of podcasts, this story draws you in from the very beginning. The plot is incredibly gripping. Every chapter is like finding little breadcrumbs, leading you down a dark and twisting path as you desperately try to put clues together and figure out what happened.

It's genius and brilliant and amazingly well written. Atmospheric and haunting (I may never look at a forest the same way again), complex, different and with a cast of highly realistic characters.

This is one of the most original stories I've read and considering this is Matt Wesolowski's debut, I can't imagine what he will come up with next but I do know I look forward to it already.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbedingt das Hörbuch (dazu) nehmen, dann erst entfaltet sich die ganze Geschichte wie gedacht
Reviewed in Germany on April 7, 2021
"The Blair Witch Project", Tana Frenchs "In the Woods" und einem klassischen "Whodunnit".
Sehr spannend, sehr originell. Hoffentlich werden Wesolowskis Bücher auch bald auf Deutsch übersetzt, denn ich würde sie wirklich noch mehr Leuten weiterempfehlen.

Very well written and with the nice idea of developing the story by making it be told by the various characters inside a podcast, I found it partially disappointing (having largely guessed the final twist at around mid-lenght) but above all very implausible (I can't say more so as not to spoil).

Six Stories's plot is so fresh. Haven't heard podcasts helping to unravel the crime and mystery surrounding the killing of a teenager 20 years ago. The characters in this novel, those five unruly teenagers with shades of grey in all of them has been well projected. And the podcaster character was one which I loved. The bygone eras of witchcraft and spooky house are well flushed out with great flair. One of the best crime mystery novel with a satisfying closure. 👍
