Here, at last, is a book brimming with the good news of raising children—the basic reassuring news about happiness and unconditional love, about enduring family connections and kids who grow up right. Edward M. Hallowell, M.D., father of three and a clinical psychiatrist, has thought long and hard about what makes children feel good about themselves and the world they live in. Now, in The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness, Dr. Hallowell shares his findings with all of us who care about children.

As Dr. Hallowell argues, we don’t need statistical studies or complicated expert opinions to raise children. What we
do need is love, wonder, and the confidence to trust our instincts. This inspiring book outlines a 5-step plan that all parents can use in giving their children the gift of happiness that will last a lifetime. Connection, play, practice, mastery, and recognition: as fundamental as these five concepts are, they hold the key to raising children with healthy self-esteem, moral awareness, and spiritual values. Dr. Hallowell explores each step in depth and shows how they work together to foster trust, respect, and joy.

Privilege, wealth, and expensive “extras” are
not necessary for happiness—there are many stories here of children who have overcome poverty, abandonment, and shocking deprivation to find true fulfillment. Dr. Hallowell encourages us as parents to reconnect with the moments in our own childhoods that made a difference; he explores the impact of genetics and environmental factors on the inner workings of a child’s mind; and he discusses how activities like team sports, community service, religious observance, and household chores can foster a child’s sense of mastery.

Like the works of T. Berry Brazelton and Benjamin Spock,
The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness is infused with the wisdom and humanity of a doctor who truly loves and understands children. Writing with the warmth of a friend and the authority of an expert, Dr. Hallowell gives us a book at once practical and exuberant, joyous and informative, eye-opening and reassuring. Ultimately, this book is a celebration of childhood and of the magic that happens between parents and the children they love.

Edward (Ned) Hallowell, M.D. is a board-certified child and adult psychiatrist and world authority on ADHD. He is a graduate of Harvard College and Tulane Medical School, and was a Harvard Medical School faculty member for 21 years. He is the Founder of The Hallowell ADHD Centers in Boston MetroWest, New York City, San Francisco, Palo Alto and Seattle.

He has spent the past four decades helping thousands of adults and children live happy and productive lives through his strength-based approach to neurodiversity, and has ADHD and dyslexia himself.

Dr Hallowell is a New York Times bestselling author and has written 20 books on multiple psychological topics. The groundbreaking Distraction series, which began with Driven to Distraction, co-authored with Dr John Ratey in 1994, sparked a revolution in understanding of ADHD.

This book should be read by every person thinking about having children, every person who has children and every person who has grown children, anyone who has grandchildren and anyone who deals with children, especially school teachers, administrators and coaches. It is a book that would have helped me so much as a single mom had I read it when my kids were small. It explains how to raise a happy child and if you are going to start reading it, finish it. Highlight the best parts and the parts that you want to especially remember and you will find that you have highlighted a great portion of the book. I have a huge amount of highlighting in mine with notes written in the margins and the pages are all worn due to use. It has helped me even now with my teenagers but would have helped me not to make a few serious mistakes in raising my kids had I known about this book when they were younger. I even bought copies for my 2 teenage children for when they have kids. Yes, it is that good and that important. If you love your child and want to raise him/her to be happy, not rich, not materialistic, not mean or angry, but happy and well adjusted for life, read this book.

This is the BEST book ever. I recieved it from my aunt when my first son was born. Now that boy is 12, and I have two girls as well, 9 and 7.
I have read so many books on child rearing and this is by far my absolute favorite. Hallowell gives the most useful easy to apply advice to your own life. Like the author I come a family full of mental illness, drug, and alcohol abuse. I did not have the best history to raise my children. But this book has helped me filter all the overwhelming information on what is really needed to raise connected capable resilient kids. I loved this book so much that I have read all of Hallowells other books, and I given this book to so many new moms.

I purchased this book because like most parents I want my children to be happy. The author was very likeable and I liked how he told stories about his own kids in relation to the points he was trying to make. The author is a Dr. and used scientific research as the basis for his suggestions, but did not cite medical mumbo jumbo in the book. It is written in an easy to understand, conversational style. I found some practical advice in this book such as how connectedness at home and school are so important to kid's happiness. Also just helpful, useful advice on helping you to raise your kid's to their best. I am glad that I read this book and I would recommend it to others.

Wow! What a great book. Dr. Hallowell hit the nail on the head with this title. This book was like therapy as I read it waiting for my son to arrive. I really wish that every parent or parent-to-be would read this title. I think the world would be a better place.

This book re-kindled memories of my own childhood, both good and bad that will help to establish a baseline for raising my little guy. It was also a very entertaining read. I laughed, cried a little, was inspired and a little heartbroken, but in the end, determined to remember this book when obstacles in fatherhood arrive. I will, no doubt, be revisiting this book over and over again throughout my son's life. What a resource.

If you are an expecting parent or a parent already, please do you and your child a favor and buy and read this book. If you are a loved one of an expecting parent, or a parent that could use a little support, please do them a favor and purchase them this book. And make sure they read it. It will help to make the world a little bit better for us all.

I decided to read this book after I had had the opportunity to participate in an educational seminar with Dr. Hallowell. What he had to say then and in the book is straightforward and not complicated. The key to happiness is ongoing engagement in the cycle of connection, play, practice, mastery, and recognition with connection being the foundation. He uses examples from his own life and those of his children to illustrate these points. His is a humble, life-affirming approach that can provide positive guidance for adults, especially those who are parents of children.

I have read this book three times. I go back to it every once in a while to stay on track with what is truly important for my kids. I watched my nine year pitch in a baseball game for the first time this week. As he struggled, walking in three batters I thought of this book and reminded myself that failing is not only OK but is vital. An hour later as he stood up to the plate with two outs and down by one run, 11 to 10, he dug down deep into his determination and hit a ball to the fence for a double, driving in two runs and winning the game. All the words in the world I could have used would never have been as effective as living that lesson of failing and getting back up again to keep giving your best. Hallowell really nails it with this book. Just love your kid, let them fail, make sure they have unstructured play as much as possible and praise them when they truly deserve it.

I am a theologian by love for the avocation and in the interest fo pursuing excellence I often find it rewarding to study, philosophy, psychology, history cosmology and anthropology, you get the idea. Recently I have been focusing on child development and in so doing I have discovered that I have ADD( attention deficite disorder) ,but after reading this book, I feel that ADD really stands for additional development dispenceries. This is the clearest most logical book that I have ever read. I feel I have known the author all my life. It's a short book with an encycopedia of good , loving ideas for getting connected and growing both youg and old alike.

Dr. Hallowell is an amazing fellow. He strikes the perfect balance between being a knowledgeable psychiatrist and a vulnerable, loving and warm father. Whether you are an educator or a parent, you will learn much, reminiscence and have a chance to be a better person after reading this book. The Childhood Roots gives you good laughs and concrete tips to enjoy children and strengthen the foundation for life. Better yet, it gives you a map and the needed information to know whether you're still on the road or lost in your way. If there is one book to read when becoming a parent and realizing what your job is, this is it.
