Leah Buchanan is a smart a**, fearless forty year old who sorta acts like she is a teenager still caught up in her teenage angst. She is born into a family of women who are concubines for the vampires in her area. Her family holds a lot of prestige and honor because of their service. Her mother actually holds the record for being kept by a vampire for the longest period of time. Leah, however, could not be less interested in servicing a vampire.
Lucien is the vampire. He is powerful, sexy, dangerous, and will stop at nothing to finally have Leah. Even if that means forcing her to sign the blood contract. Which of course he does. He has been waiting for her for decades and now he will break every single rule the vampire council has to have her the way he wants her. Leah doesn't stand a chance. But that doesn't mean she makes it easy for him.
There are times in this book that I wanted to see Leah give in a little, or Lucien to be a little more gentle. Their first night, when he feeds on her for the first time, is brutal. He promises to never hurt her, and he loses control. Control that quite frankly he is known for. But Leah tends to push Lucien's buttons at every turn. In fact she is exceptionally good at it. Like most of Kristen Ashley's heroines, she refuses to give in and take an easy path.
Lucien is breaking rules that could end up costing him and Leah their lives. He takes her as a lover, which is a no no. He ends his bond with his vampire wife, which as you might imagine, doesn't go so well. He wants to bond with Leah which is against the council rules. So much so, that she can be hung and he can be burned for it. And although his family is on board for the most part, his father is ridiculously cruel to Leah. And as we will eventually see, hurts her emotionally to upset and hurt Lucien.
But like all beautiful love stories, these two crazy people fall in love. They bond, and they become inseparable. So much so that the laws in the council change. Lucien means so much to them that they actually allow humans & vampires to bond again. With the famous words.....Until the Sun Falls from the Sky.....
I give this 5 lipsticks. I brought me to a new love for paranormal romance, one I hold dear to my heart.

Never,” she returned.
His mouth moved to her ear and he murmured, “We’ll see.”
Many years ago in order to preserve peace and balance between humans and vampires the Immortal and Mortal Agreement was signed prohibiting vampires from hunting mortals but rather allowing them to take a mortal as a concubine for the sole purpose of feeding from them. Once they are done with them they release them and take another, former concubines are still financially supported by their vampires for the rest of their lives and if they had been together long enough there are also other benefits that they enjoy all in return for their service. Leah Buchanan comes from a long line of vampire concubines and they are held in high regard amongst the vampire community. Lucien is probably the strongest, most powerful vampire in existence and he’s marked Leah Buchanan 20 years ago and has watched and waited for the right time to make her his. Finally Leah is available and as The Selection is upon us Lucien pulls some strings to make sure she agrees to serve him. Lucien is not happy with the limitations put on his lifestyle (having enjoyed a freer life prior to the Immortal and Mortal Agreement) and seeks to shake things up and he sees Leah as the perfect person to help him do this. He knows she’ll be a challenge and since he’s rarely challenged, he is exhilarated by her reactions, but even he doesn’t realize just how much of a challenge she’ll be or how sweet the reward will be if he can just get through those walls of hers.
I really love when a book can make you hate a character one second and then love them the next and it’s even better when your reactions are in tune with the character in the book’s reactions. That’s pretty much what happened to me while I was reading this book. Much like Leah, I was very back and forth on my feelings for Lucien throughout the book. One second I couldn’t believe what a colossal jerk he was being and couldn’t see how he could possibly redeem himself but then next thing I knew he was being completely sweet and gentle and it nearly gave me whiplash with how quickly my feelings towards him changed! (‘Lucien could be a jerk, but he was a hot jerk who could be funny, sweet and gentle.’) I could totally relate to Leah and how she was feeling because I was right there with her, especially in her confusion over how she should be reacting to Lucien. He was definitely the king of mixed messages and maybe the most alpha male I’ve ever encountered in a book!
“Stop hugging me.”
“I can’t help it, pet, you’re entirely huggable.”
“I’m huggable?”
“Entirely.”
“You know, Lucien, you need to make up your mind. Either you’re this guy or you’re the jerky controlling guy who I met at The Selection or you’re the near-miss murder guy last night. Pick one. I’m getting confused.”
See? He could be bossing her around or being an insensitive jerk one minute but then he’ll burst out laughing and be playful and fun the next. As you learn more about Lucien and what he’s gone through and the ins and outs of Vampire Culture you begin to understand his actions and his personality starts to make sense. There’s this whole business of “the taming” which I wasn’t sure how I felt about but then Leah had an a-ha moment regarding it and it made sense and actually made you feel a little bad for Lucien and the way he’s been forced to live. I won’t spoil it but you’ll see!
Like I said, I could totally relate to Leah and I really liked her character. She was full of spunk and never backed down from Lucien, even when it seems she is submitting it’s still really just an act of defiance. I loved how she challenged him and how it was definitely not insta-love for her. In fact, it was pretty much insta-hate with a side of possible-like for a lot of the book. I thought her ‘Why I Hate Lucien Vault’ and her ‘Why I Might Like Lucien Small Fireproof Safe’ were pretty hilarious. I also liked learning along with her about Vampire Culture and the rules and history of the life she’s suddenly found herself in, it was a unique take on the vampire lore and I found it simple and believable. My only gripe about Leah was that she is supposed to be 40 years old but she often talked and acted like a teenager or at the oldest early 20s, so at times it was a little hard to reconcile her words/actions to her age in my head.
Lucien is referred to (in jest by Leah) as Master Vampire Lucien and that pretty much sums him up. He exudes power and is respected by pretty much everyone, he protects what’s his and those foolish enough to cross him know that there will be serious consequences. As I mentioned, many times Lucien comes across as a controlling jerk when he is asserting his power but as you go you begin to understand his ways and why he has to act the way he does and you’ll start to fall in love with his sweet and generous side that begins to overshadow his controlling jerk side. There was definitely a lot of back and forth in my head over my feelings for him throughout much of the book, but that’s all part of the fun!
I know this book is part of a trilogy of three separate (but somehow connected) couples so I was waiting for the setup that would connect the three books, the Three Prophesy finally comes up nearly at the end of the book but it definitely set the stage for what’s to come in the next two books. And I hope we get to see Leah and Lucien again as the fates of these three couples collide!
“You love me. I love you. We’re connected. What we have is beautiful and that’s all it’ll ever be. For eternity. Until the end of days. Until the sun falls from the sky, all you and I will share is beauty.”

Lucien is one of the most feared and respected vampires, he has been watching Leah for decades waiting his chance to have her attend a selection. What he does not realise is that he has totally underestimated the feelings that Leah arouses in him. He is not used to having his orders or word questioned, in all his many centuries he has never had a mortal like Leah, who marches to her own drum.
This is the first in a trilogy from KA, I was really looking forward to this, being a fan of her work already I thought I knew what to expect, little did I realise what a treat was in store for me. KA has excelled herself here. Lucien is a vampire but he is also the usual bossy but gentle alpha male we have all come to expect. Leah is beautiful and stubborn even when faced with a six foot five powerful vampire. So much happens in this story it is impossible to review without giving everything away. But I will say that KA's take on vampires is so new and fresh, okay so they still need blood, but the set up of how they live amongst humans, and their association with a few chosen families is very clever and innovative. There are also strict rules that affect vampires, enforced by the vampire dominion. This is full of action and romance. The passion and emotion between Lucien and Leah jumps off the page and the reader is drawn in and totally involved with the story as it unfolds. A truly wonderful read.
