Good Girl Complex (Avalon Bay, 1) Paperback – February 1, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
*USA Today and Toronto Star bestseller*
Full of romance, hijinks, and longing, Good Girl Complex is Elle Kennedy at her very best.
She does everything right. So what could go wrong?
Mackenzie “Mac” Cabot is a people pleaser. Her demanding parents. Her prep school friends. Her long-time boyfriend. It’s exhausting, really, always following the rules. All she wants to do is focus on growing her internet business, but first she must get a college degree at her parents’ insistence. That means moving to the beachside town of Avalon Bay, a community made up of locals and the wealthy students of Garnet College.
Twenty-year-old Mac has had plenty of practice suppressing her wilder impulses, but when she meets local bad boy Cooper Hartley, that ability is suddenly tested. Cooper is rough around the edges. Raw. Candid. A threat to her ordered existence. Their friendship soon becomes the realest thing in her life.
Despite his disdain for the trust-fund kids he sees coming and going from his town, Cooper soon realizes Mac isn’t just another rich clone and falls for her. Hard. But as Mac finally starts feeling accepted by Cooper and his friends, the secret he’s been keeping from her threatens the only place she’s ever felt at home.

Potential spoilers-
My biggest complaint was the ending- it didn’t feel like there was one. Because there wasn’t. Like I don’t need some huge HEA epilogue, but a little wrap up would be nice. The book ended so abruptly I seriously thought it was missing a chapter. The characters get back together the last two pages- which duh, they always do. I wanted a little follow up on their businesses. And naming a golden retriever
‘Daisy’. Ugh.
I loved Mac and Cooper and love being able to see them together for as much of the book as we did. I wish that the ending so abrupt. I’d like to have some sort of epilogue of them a bit down the road after the reconciliation.
Headed off to read the next Avalon Bay book!
I am a huge @ellekennedy33 fan from the Off Campus series and was all too excited for her next novel, #GoodGirlComplex
Set the scene: Mackenzie “Mac” Cabot is a prep-school, trust-fund, rule-following good girl (with a boyfriend) that is secretly one hell of an college student turned entrepreneur in the beach town of Avalon Bay. Mac has always done everything everyone wanted her to do — until she finds herself in the mix with bad boy Cooper who embodies “the other side of the tracks” from her world. This has Allie/Noah vibes from the Notebook, but be warned there are cheating/secret keeping themes intertwined.
Good Girl Complex easily could have been just another take on the fake relationship turns real relationship trope — but, it explores some truly thought provoking socioeconomic comparisons that sets it apart from others in this genre.
Slow burn + opposites attract + small town beach romance + fake relationship “bet” = 4/5 ⭐️

"First of all, they say? Who's they and who cares? Every relationship is different. Some people want, some people want passion. We define our own relationship. And second, I hate to break it to you, but we're both argumentative jack*****."
I have seen lots of mixed reviews on Good Girl Complex. Mostly, people saying it's pretty much an exact replica of another popular book, or this book is glorifying toxic relationships, and there was no epilogue. The horror!!
It's okay not to like a book. And, it's ok that a book isn't for you. But, I have to disagree on the fact that Good Girl Complex is almost an exact replica of that popular book that's been turned into a movie (I'm sure you guys know what I'm talking about). So, just in case people don't know this, books can have the same tropes without them being a copy of another book. That's all this was. Good girl falls for "bad boy", if that's even what you want to call Cooper. Also, the relationship started with a lie. But, okay, that doesn't make it the same. And, I honestly didn't find Cooper and Mackenzie's relationship to be all that toxic. They argued and liked it, so what! I'm beginning to wonder if I read the same book as these other reviewers. I was kind of anticipating a 1 star read, and this is probably why I don't normally read reviews beforehand.
Ok, sorry for the Ted talk!
I read this book fairly quickly because I found it hard to put down. I enjoyed Cooper and Mackenzie's banter; the plot was good, and I really liked the characters. The chemistry could've been a tad better, but in all, it was a solid 4-star read for me. The character's developed like they should've, and I was thoroughly entertained with the drama. Thank you, Elle Kennedy, for writing another wonderful book. I can't wait to read Bad Girl Reputation.
If you've been steering clear of this one because of other people's opinions, I absolutely recommend it, even if only to form your own opinion.
Happy Reading 💛

The main characters are walking cliches: One the one hand, the brooding bad boy who despises the rich college students in his little town. Of course he's fully tattooed and sexy. On the other hand, we have the offspring of an insanely rich and influential family who already made her own money with two websites (tbh, it sounds extremely unrealistic that one can make that much money with this idea, but anyway) and really doesn't want to go to college. She's supposed to be a trophy wife in the future and the whole story starts as revenge plan. To me, it felt like the author didn't put any effort in developing the characters. They were so shallow and uninspired. The rich people are all full of themselves, take everything for granted, are "clones" (and therefor not human, very problematic). The locals are all kind of rough, down to earth people, but at the same time super condescending.
I read in other reviews that people didn't like the cheating trope - it was actually the first time ever that a main character was cheating in a young adult novel I've read. Usually, they break up before anyone can do anything "bad" so I liked that part (but not that it didn't have any real consequences). It was clear from the start that Mac wasn't really into her boyfriend and breaking them up is the easiest thing. They don't even like each other, it seems.
The whole story is kinda boring and predictable and I don't care much for any of the characters. I accidentally read the second book (about the twin brother and his ex) before this one and liked it better - but not very much. I think Elle Kennedy has better book series.
Mac isn't your stereotypical rich girl. She has a trust fund and was brought up around a lot of wealth, but she is determined to be her own entrepreneur and wasn't keen to go to college. She has a boyfriend, Preston, but she's not madly in love with him. They're just comfortable.
Cooper is a townie and with his two sleeves of tattoos looks like your typical bad boy. When one evening he gets fired from his job due to a complaint by Preston, Mac's boyfriend, he is set on revenge. When he finds out that Preston has a girlfriend, him and his friends devise a plan for Cooper to seduce the unsuspecting clone and flaunt the relationship in front of Preston to cause him pain.
What Cooper wasn't expecting is that the unsuspecting clone, Mac, turns out to be the opposite of what he thought and he slowly starts to fall for her. What happens when a relationship is built on a lie?! It inevitably is destined to break.
There was some good chemistry between Mac and Cooper and I liked the side characters of Bonnie and Cooper's twin brother and friends. This is a standalone in a series and does end on a happy note. The one thing that would have made this book even better is to have had an epilogue, but I understand we're likely to hear more of these characters in the next book about Evan and Gen.
