Long before the First Order, before the Empire, before even The Phantom Menace...Jedi lit the way for the galaxy in The High Republic.

Padawan Reath Silas is being sent from the cosmopolitan galactic capital of Coruscant to the undeveloped frontier―and he couldn’t be less happy about it. He’d rather stay at the Jedi Temple, studying the archives. But when the ship he’s traveling on is knocked out of hyperspace in a galactic-wide disaster, Reath finds himself at the center of the action.

The Jedi and their traveling companions find refuge on what appears to be an abandoned space station. But then strange things start happening, leading the Jedi to investigate the truth behind the mysterious station, a truth that could end in tragedy...

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-Gray drops readers into a perfectly spine-chilling survival story in this "High Republic" YA novel. Two hundred years before the Skywalker Saga, Padawan Reath and his Jedi Master Jora are assigned to Starlight, a beacon for the Republic in frontier space. Before they and the rest of their companions get there, the ship is forced out of hyperspace and dropped into an unknown system. With disaster imminent and communication almost impossible, the Jedi take charge of the survivors and seek shelter in a mysterious, abandoned space station-only to realize as they explore that the Dark side got there first. The station's arboretum has overgrown most of the complex, which is ominous enough, but there are also mysterious idols hiding in the tangled vines and disturbing the Force. Gray's worldbuilding and characters are "Star Wars" at its best, introducing readers to the familiar canon with High Republic flavor. The work is told from multiple points of view and in two time lines. Reath is indisputably the protagonist, working his way from recalcitrant archivist to stalwart Knight. The novel features not one but two burgeoning supervillains, and Gray manages the stakes and the emotional tension of the heroes flawlessly. Reath is white; there is non-alien diversity in the secondary characters. VERDICT Perfect for even casual fans, this novel is action-packed with adventure and mystery. With "Star Wars" interest at an all-time high, this is recommended for general purchase.-Emmy Neal, Lake Forest Lib., ILα(c) Copyright 2011. Slow Start but overall good.
4 Stars
Slow Start but overall good.
This book takes place during the events of the book “Light of the Jedi.” It tells the story of a guy named Reath Silas. He is a Jedi padawan and is trained by Jora Malli who is a Jedi Master in Light of the Jedi. He is on his way to the Starlight beacon with Jedi Master Cohmac and Master Orla as well as the pilots of the Vessel they are traveling in when “The great disaster” takes place and they are forced to take refuge in an abandoned station where they quickly notice the Dark side of the force is very strong.I found this book to be very boring at first but after about 90 pages or so I started to really enjoy it. Once the book starts giving hints about what is going on in this abandoned area, I started to get very interested and could not put the book down. The book sometimes jumped back into a story about two of these characters in the past. Although the past story is connected to some ideas in the book, I did not find it to be particularly interesting. The “bad guys” in this book were not very interesting either and at times found them a bit comical even up until other “bad guys” showed up. But overall, the parts with action at the ending was pretty entertaining to read.Although some parts of this book were not my favorite, I honestly loved some of the ideas the book was trying to give. Without spoiling much, this book gives a glance at what might make a Jedi turn to the Dark side. The book focuses a good amount on questioning authority and thinking for yourself. I would recommend this book if you are an avid Star Wars reader. If you don’t have much time on your hands and would only like to read the larger storylines types of books, I would recommend Light of the Jedi. You can go without reading this book and not really miss out on too much. Although I did notice a lot of easter eggs in this book that could lead to bigger stories.

This book was fantastic! I read the first High Republic book and struggled because I couldn't visualize any of the characters or ships. I found myself searching online for some clue what these characters were supposed to look like! But in this second installment in the High Republic series, the writing was much better and the characters were described with much more clarity! When Claudia Gray writes, you can FEEL that it is Star Wars. The characters are fleshed out and likeable, as well as relatable. I love the character of Reath, and I especially loved the Jay and Silent Bob shout out with Leox and Geode! Geode is such a great character and I laughed every time he was referenced in the book! What a fun addition! The story was totally unique and interesting and I could easily visualize all the action. I know sci-fi can't be easy to write, especially when it's Star Wars, but Claudia manages to do it perfectly every single time. This is a great book and a wonderful addition to the Star Wars galaxy. I hope to see more of these characters!

This is the second book in The High Republic that I've read and so far I have thoroughly enjoyed this era of Star Wars. Into the Dark's story arc runs in parallel to the Legacy Run disaster highlighted in Light of the Jedi. The main protagonist is Reath Silas, a Padawan who is leaving Coruscant for his new post out in the frontier of space on the Starlight Beacon. Accompanying him on his journey are Jedi Master Cohmac Vitus and Jedi Knights Orla Jareni and Dez Rydan. During their hyperspace journey the Legacy Run disaster happens and they are thrust out of hyperspace and stranded on an abandoned space station.

That is where the story really jumps off. Into the Dark is another example of the great Claudia Gray knowing how to pace a story and provide details that not only advance the story but also expand the world. I feel that The High Republic era is providing such great background to the Jedi Order that we have come to know in the Skywalker saga. The story also provides many opportunities to show how the Force and the Jedi Order are not the same, and their wills are different. I feel that this is the first crack in the Jedi Order that will eventually divulge into more Jedi's questioning the Jedi Council and the Order's ruling and guidelines.

Overall, this entry into the Star Wars lore was a fun read and I can't wait to find out how the Jedi Order will handle the Nihil threat to the Republic. These books have great "easter eggs" mentioning Jedi Master Yoda or even the Hutts. I wonder if either will come into play in future installments in The High Republic era.

Claudia Gray continues to show that she's one of the best (if not THE best) writers currently working for the new 'Star Wars' canon. While the first 'High Republic' was entertaining enough, I felt 'Into the Dark' was more compelling, making use of well-developed characters in order to present the reader with an entertaining story.

The way the book uses flashbacks in order to hammer home some of the story's main themes certainly works, and it was cool to see the way the Jedi worked and thought a century before the events of The Phantom Menace. And although most of the book takes place inside a seemingly abandoned station, it still includes enough secondary locations for it not to feel too contained or small. Plus, the presence of some interesting 'dark side characters' does manage to give the story some depth --yeah, the main antagonists, so to speak, are a little stereotypically evil, but the internal conflicts within the characters (especially Padawan Reath, and Affie, a civilian).

And yes, there's a character named Geode, who's "just" a.... rock. But surprisingly, he works, in an ironically funny sort of way.

So yeah, if you're already into the whole 'High Republic' era, you're definitely gonna enjoy 'Into the Dark', but if you're only here because of Claudia Gray... you're still gonna have a good time. It ain't perfect, but it's entertaining and addictive enough.

Into the Dark is a young adult novel set during the High Republic Era, which occurs a couple of hundred years before the Battle of Yavin/The Original Trilogy. It is concurrent with the "regular" canon novel, Light of the Jedi, overlapping with the hyperspace disasters that are occurring in that novel. It is mostly set on a space station in the outer rim with a lot of dark side energy and sets a group of Jedi against the Nihil and a new threat. It also jumps between the "present-day" and events that occur twenty-five years earlier, so it is not super easy to follow at all times, especially since all of the characters in the book are new.

The good thing about the High Republic era is that it is not just a rehash of Jedi vs. Sith, and introduces a lot of new characters. The downside is that it is harder to be invested in characters that will, for the most part, be dead by the time the prequel trilogy even starts. This novel did a fairly good job introducing the group of characters and giving them enough of a backstory that the readers can try to get invested in them. Obviously, the Skywalkers are not even a thought at this point, and whatever two Sith are out there (assuming this is post-Darth Bane and the rule of two) they are not a part of the story at this point (if they ever will be in the high republic novels). Certainly, there is room for the characters to be developed in subsequent novels. The Nihil are definitely set up as a threat to the Jedi and the Republic overall, and the book just really scratches the surface of their group.

Even though this is a young-adult novel, so it is considered ancillary to the main canon storyline, it is written well enough that adults can easily enjoy it. It is a fairly easy read, but I personally find the novels that have the characters from the movies to be the easiest read because I do not have to remind myself who the characters are when I pick the book up after a few days away from it. Overall, it is not what I would call one of the must-read novels, but it is something that most people who collect the novels will enjoy reading once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Claudia Grey versteht nun mal ihr Handwerk!
Reviewed in Germany on May 4, 2021
