Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Jim Henson's Sesame Street Muppets cavort cheerfully with people of all sizes, shapes and ethnicities in this rather humdrum effort to show the ways in which all people are the same, despite obvious physical differences. On alternate spreads, drawings imitating photos zero in on variations on noses, hair, mouths, skin, eyes and bodies, all "different" from one another. A turn of the page reveals all of the owners of these body parts interacting, alongside several lines of sing-song verse explaining how our noses, hair, etc., are "the same." Some of the rhymes are silly or forced; part of the explanation of skin reads: "Muscles and bones are wrapped inside it. / We all have blood and skin to hide it!" Even the affable Sesame Street gang can't enliven this mundane treatment of a significant subject. Ages 4-8.

Great book for very small children - but who is the random monster?

Great book for very small children - but who is the random monster?
My two year old loves this book. It’s a fantastic way to introduce very small children to the concept that not everyone looks like them. There are some great throwback characters as well that younger kids may not refognize (Barkley, the tweedle bugs, characters I remember from 30 years ago)That being said, there is a weird devil looking (borderline scary-looking) monster, with yellow eyes and pointy, teeth who I don’t recall from Sesame Street at all. My son points to him every time he appears and says “who’s that??” Does anyone know who he is? I’d love to give my kid a straight answer.Edit: I found out his name is Frazzle and his backstory is really sweet and falls right in line with accepting and being cool with physical differences. Nicely done, Sesame Street.

This was one of my son’s favorite books. I got one for my great niece and she too loved it. They interact with the pages , point to the many different people, and describe what they see. I’d say the best age to give this book would be 3 and 1/2 to 4 years; they will continue reading it for years.

We have the hardback version with paper pages & my 1 year old absolutely loves it but struggles to “help” turn the pages without ripping or wrinkling them. Bought the board book version for her & also as a gift for a niece, and the board book version is shortened! It’s very good quality and vivid pictures but I do wish that the end where it says the part “a rainbow would be boring if it were only green or blue, so aren’t you glad you look like you?” would be the full paragraph because it’s my favorite part of the book. Still read this to my baby pretty much daily. Highly recommend.

This book is really fun for my son because there's lots of stuff to look at on each page. And I like the lesson that we're all different but that we all have things in common too. For example, "we all have different noses" is a page, and there's pictures of all sorts of people's and Sesame Street characters' noses, including snuffalupagus' nose. And then the next page has a huge interesting scene with all sorts of people and characters going about their lives using their noses for smelling stinky fish or flowers or sneezing. There are words that accompany it about how we all use our noses to do the same things, smell stuff and sneeze, etc. The book continues in paired pages like this, it's a lot of fun.

One of the books my son (two years old) makes me read over and over. He adores this book, which is about how everyone is different and the same (ie, it talks about noses, eyes, skin, etc., showing how everyone is different with these things, but then shows how noses, eyes, skin, etc., are all the same as well). He loves to point to all the different people and body parts in the book and talk about them. For example, he'll point and ask about what the people are doing in a scene, or when the book is talking about eyes, he'll say "Eye!" and point to his eyes or mine.

The book is constructed a little flimsy considered how rough kids are with things. I'm not a huge fan of some of the content, but most of it is good. I leave some parts out when we read this out loud just because as a family, we're pretty sensitive to disability issues and this book tries and fails at that (including a person in a wheelchair in one of the crowd scenes doesn't matter when you're talking about how all bodies are the same because they can all dance ...). It's much better than most books at racial diversity. It doesn't address gender at all, just skips that completely.

If your kid isn't familiar with Sesame Street already, they're likely going to be a bit confused by the Sesame Street characters in the book. My kid doesn't watch Sesame Street regularly, but he was at least enough aware of it that he wasn't completely puzzled. It still took him reading it a few times to make the connection though.

My almost 2 year old LOVES the book. Of all his toys and books this keeps his attention the longest. He loves to cuddle up and read with me or sit alone and flip though it.
The message of the book is just lovely and the illustrations are so well done and it seems there is always something new to see each time we read it.
    I highly recommend this book.
