2023 Lambda Literary Award Finalist
2023 Bram Stoker Award Finalist for Superior Achievement in a Novel

For fans of Mexican Gothic, from three-time Bram Stoker Award–winning author Gwendolyn Kiste comes a novel inspired by the untold stories of forgotten women in classic literature—from Lucy Westnera, a victim of Stoker’s Dracula, and Bertha Mason, Mr. Rochester’s attic-bound wife in Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre—as they band together to combat the toxic men bent on destroying their lives, set against the backdrop of the Summer of Love, Haight-Ashbury, 1967.

Reluctant Immortals is a historical horror novel that looks at two men of classic literature, Dracula and Mr. Rochester, and the two women who survived them, Bertha and Lucy, who are now undead immortals residing in Los Angeles in 1967 when Dracula and Rochester make a shocking return in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco.

Combining elements of historical and gothic fiction with a modern perspective, in a tale of love and betrayal and coercion,
Reluctant Immortals is the lyrical and harrowing journey of two women from classic literature as they bravely claim their own destiny in a man’s world.

RELUCTANT IMMORTALS IS A GEM AMONG ALL OF KISTE’S OTHER GEMS
I’ve read all of Gwendolyn Kiste’s previous books, including her limited chapbook The Invention of Ghosts, and honestly thought I couldn’t possibly love her writing any more than I already do. Then I picked up Reluctant Immortals and was pleasantly surprised to find that I couldn’t have been more mistaken. I actually could love her writing more. A lot more, as it turns out!Reluctant Immortals re-introduces us to Lucy and Bee (of Dracula and Jane Eyre fame, respectively) and their nearly century-old efforts to stave off the attentions of a couple of truly bad men, one of whom is among the baddest in the history of horror fiction. Set in the early 1970’s, Reluctant Immortals is fast paced and riveting. It’s also fun and whimsical, without ever losing its darkness. It’s true horror. It’s also quite emotional when it wants to be. Kiste has a wonderful ability to cast a spell upon her readers with her exquisite and impeccable writing style. I found it somewhat ironic how often during the story she mentioned someone being under another’s thrall, as I have often felt myself almost literally enthralled by the sheer beauty of her writing when reading her books.I cannot recommend Reluctant Immortals enough. It’s easily one of my most enjoyable reads of the year. And if you haven’t yet checked out Gwendolyn’s other works, I highly suggest you do so. I promise you, you will thank me later.

I really liked this book, got me out of my book slump. Such an interesting idea, and while the metaphors and analogies are a little obvious they're very good. Only fell short of five stars for me because I wasn't ever surprised by the story.

I love the idea of this book. However, the writer overuses literary devices, especially the simile. It is jarring and unnecessary, frustrating at times. There are points in the book in which it seems as if I’m reading an 8th grade English assignment with requirements to use at least 5 similes in 5 paragraphs or something of the sort. Its overuse takes away from the richness of the text, rather than adding to it.

I did end up really enjoying the final part of this book. The prose was less overladen with unnecessary descriptors, and the characters/setting really came alive. I’d love to see this as a movie.

I received this advanced reader copy through a Goodreads giveaway.

Really, I had no idea what to expect from this book. The description was so wonderfully bizarre, I knew I had to check it out. Reluctant Immortals IS a weird book, and so incredibly fun. Lucy from Dracula and Bertha from Jane Eyre in California in 1967?! Yes, perfect. The plot was well paced, making this book impossible to put down, and the two female leads were extremely well-draw, fully realized, bad asses.

Reading Dracula or Jane Eyre is not necessary to enjoy Reluctant Immortals, as Kiste does a great job of filling the reader in on the pertinent parts of the older novels without bogging down her own story.

Reluctant Immortals was so much fun to read, like a paranormal beach read. I’m glad I took a chance on it.

This was fun on audio. Set in the late 60's (70's? I didn't take notes and am relying on my brain but it had very flower-childy and Manson culty vibes), it's a story about two forgotten women made immortal by two dickish men (Dracula & Mr. Rochester). Bee (Bertha) & Lucy spend their days overseeing Dracula's urns filled with his ashes, so his domineering self doesn't reappear to boss them around. Their evenings are spent at a drive-in. Doesn't sound too bad of a life to me! But then Jane Eyre shows up and the bossy men appear and their quiet life goes sideways.

Adventure and some mayhem follow as Lucy tries to rein in her undying hunger while just doing her best to stay in charge of her own life. This book may infuriate you (ugh, most of these MEN, please walk into the sun already) but it pays off in the end. My only complaint? I finished the book wondering what Mr. Rochester did to Bee to make her immortal. I'm still here feeling a little confused by it. Maybe I missed something (entirely possible because it's been a stressful week). Was it some sort of fungus? Some Lovecraftian thing? A devil's bargain? I'm a little confused but maybe someone can piece it all together better than me.

LA in the 60s. Lucy i Bertha („Bee”), both immortal, live in a dilapidated mansion and kill time spending nights at a drive-in. Still haunted by their wrongdoers, they embark on a journey that will take them to San Francisco during the Summer of Love. There, they will face the men who deprived them of the chance to live out their own stories: Dracula and Rochester.

Gwendolyn Kiste really does them justice in this very successful attempt at empowering the background female characters from the classic works. She perfectly marries the Gothic musings of the protagonist with the landscape of hippie America, and skillfully intersperses action scenes with calm moments fleshing out the characters and their relationships. And she never falters, including the very rewarding finale.

"A modern Gothic novel" applies better than "horror" here. A fantastic read for anyone who enjoyed „Dracula” and „Jane Eyre,” but at least for a moment felt sorry for Lucy and Bertha.

i don’t think this was an awful book, but i think the author desperately needed an editor!

it started out great, but ran out of juice in the last third of the book. i kept reading, in hopes that Ms. Kiste could pull the fat out of the fire, but was sadly disappointed.
