Review because of the condition received, not because of the actual book
I'm leaving a low review not because of the book, because I really like it so far, I'm leaving a low review because of the condition of the book as I received it. It has scratches and wear marks all of the cover, it definitely doesn't look new.

Sir Benedict Harper was not made for an idle life, but that seems to be all he can manage since his dream of a military life was taken from him on the Peninsula, along with his ability to walk and dance. His restlessness leads him to agree to help a recent widow escape from her late husband's family, and escort her on a mad dash to Wales where there may, or may not, be a cottage waiting for her. As he fights his feelings of inadequacy he finds himself wondering if this fierce widow might understand him better than anyone else.

Samantha McKay has been trapped for six years. First at the home of her tyrannical father-in-law for a year while her husband was at war and then taking care of her dying husband for five years. Now under the threat of returning to a life of suppression and misery under her father-in-law, she concocts a plan to steal away in the middle of the night and make her way to Wales, where her mother was raised. She enlists the help of Sir Benedict, her neighbor's brother and a man she has not always thought of fondly. Can she keep their partnership purely business? Or will she find herself once again falling into the arms of a wounded and demanding reminder of a war she wishes to forget.

I have read many books about Wales, but I honestly believe this one contains the most descriptive images of the country and atmosphere. I have always thought of it as a foggy and craggy country (a lot like Wuthering Heights), where most Gothic novelists obviously find their inspiration. This book, however, completely changed my perception. The descriptions remind me a bit of the Pacific Northwest (where I live) and I found that charming and comforting. The people seemed friendly, if a little hesitant to welcome visitors who look down on them. I love that the musical aspect of the country was regaled upon, and the descriptor of the singing raising the roof of the church was memorable.

This the fourth story set in the world of the Survivors (The Suitor was a novella that occurred concurrently with The Arrangement), and the sixteenth story set in the world of the Bedwyns. Starting with One Night for Love, the story that first introduced us to Gwen, Lady Trentham (formerly Lady Muir), this serial keeps getting better and better as it goes. Ms. Balogh has managed to keep the stories fresh, while still finding a way to tug our heartstrings and make us smile simultaneously. This story is a powerful reminder of her signature romantic trope, damaged heroes (or heroines) finding the power of love stronger than their own obstacles.

The characters in this story shine. Ms. Balogh is an expert of creating memorable characters, whether they are in the forefront or the background. Even the lawyer who handled Samantha's business and the owner of the inn rated important enough to actually have a personality. This attention to detail really makes a difference in creating a captivating story, but so does knowing when to pull back and let the lead characters take center stage. There seemed to be a seamless quality to this differentiation in this story.

Overall, I found this a pleasant and happy read. It didn't make me laugh hysterically, or grit my teeth in suspense. But not all books need to do that to be great. Some books just need to tell a good story well with no distractions or additives. That is exactly what this book did.

The Escape is the third in Mary Balogh’s Survivors Club series about several men (and one woman) dealing with the physical and emotional trauma caused by their participation in the Napoleonic Wars. In this installment, we get the story of Benedict Harper, whose legs were crushed during a battle. He has healed to the point that he is able to walk a bit with specially made canes, but he has realized that he will never fully recover. Now he needs to discover something meaningful he can do with his life other than be a soldier. As he tries to figure out what that is, Benedict meets Samantha McKay, whose husband recently died after a long struggle with his own war wounds. After serving as his devoted nurse for so long, Samantha wants to be free, but she needs Benedict’s help to escape from her husband’s controlling family to some family property she owns in Wales. As they travel, they find themselves drawn to each other, but neither is sure they can offer enough to each other to sustain a relationship beyond a brief fling. Can two wounded people find more than temporary solace together?

This book is vintage Balogh. As with most of her books, there isn’t a lot of action. Other historical romances may feature spies or nefarious plots of various kinds, but in spite of some minor family drama, the focus here is really on the characters. Both Benedict and Samantha are dealing with the aftereffects of war on their lives and how to move forward from it. Because the war has been over for several years, the book isn’t really about the immediate recovery from trauma, but about the lingering effects, once the physical healing is mostly done but the emotional and psychological scars remain. And because this is a romance, part of that continued process of healing involves falling in love.

If you’ve been enjoying the Survivors Club books or like character-driven romances, you will probably appreciate The Escape. I did have one quibble with the book—what Samantha discovers about her Welsh family is just a little too good to be true for me, a little more of a fairy tale ending than I’m comfortable with. Still, I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the next in the series!

I will have to get the remaining books. I’ve read this out of order but it doesn’t matter a bit. A very special wonderful story. Two people who deserve a happy ending. Great story, as ever well told with every character well developed. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars GIVES STRENGTH A NEW MEANING
Reviewed in Canada on November 18, 2017
Samantha and Ben's story just had to be told. The characters leap off the page and deluge us with their whole beings.

Samantha gives us a taste of what it was to be a widow in the Victorian (?) days. After tending a sick, wounded and spoiled husband for 5 years in what was now a loveless marriage, she is still in mourning for one year. Stuck with her sister-in-law to ensure this is adhered to, Samantha has had enough.

Ben Harper has also been greviously wounded in the same war. His legs had been shattered and he was advised to amputate. But Major Benedict Harper in a defiant act against doctor's orders refused. Look at him now...although with the aid of crutches Ben IS walking.

Neither of these two people are looking for love but have found it. They just have to realize it themselves.

A must - read series, this installment was beautiful in the message it gives out. Do not ever give up! Loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quest for freedom
Reviewed in Australia on January 27, 2018
This book has buckets of heart. It’s about Benedict, a crippled war veteran and Samantha, who is recently widowed. Freedom is a key theme as Benedict fights the limitations of his body and Samantha struggles to live a normal life. The book opens with Benedict almost riding over Samantha. He has jumped his horse for the first time since being crippled in battle. She is sneaking a walk after being confined by judgemental relatives.

I read this after ‘The Arrangement‘, no 2 in the series, and it suffers by comparison. It’s similar to the previous book but not as emotionally gripping. But it’s still a great book. Among the best bits are magical days at the beach, the nuttiness of Samantha’s in laws and a goofy dog. The low point is a reunion toward the end that’s too just convenient. ‘Escape’ is not this author’s best plot, but as always the characters and the romance are truly enchanting.

Aunque me habría gustado leerlo en castellano me ha encantado. Esta autora nunca decepciona, la historia, los personajes y la relación con el resto de la serie. Imprescindible como todas sus novelas.
