A very intriguing story

A very intriguing story
I was surprised by how good this book was. The characters were very interesting and I loved Millicent. I enjoyed the bond of friendship, the sacrifice the firstborn had to make for their families. A couple of the Walkers I found very intriguing. I am completely excited about the second book coming out soon. This is a storyline I will enjoy following. Most academy series is all about sex, sex, and more sex. Most authors have jumped on the reverse harem thing and I doubt they know how to be original. This author is original and not afraid to step out on her own. I will definitely be following her.

This is a very well written, mysterious, academy type book. Intriguing premise, with enough mystery to keep you hooked but not so much that it’s aggravating. I’m looking forward to reading the next!

I liked this book. I didn’t love it but i liked it. A lot. Excellent world building great character growth and some of the best characters I’ve read in awhile. The three girls were amazing together they made an excellent team. The main Heroine was clever and a great leader and the other two side characters complemented her. The thing that kept me from loving this book though was we still have no idea why anything is happening. It’s frustrating as a reader to have to wait (for me anyway) for the next book and hope that answers will be given then. And to be completely honest I’ll have probably forgotten this book by the time the next one comes out. That may not be the case for everyone but as a reader that reads at least a couple books a day I tend to forget these types of books so I’ll have to go back and reread and that just gets annoying. All that being said I think if you’re like me you should wait until at least the second book comes out to read this one. And if you’re a slower reader and it’ll take you some time to read I definitely think you will not be disappointed in reading it.

Mix in the Hunger Games add a dash of Harry Potter only make him a her with two female friends and for chuckles add every mythical creature from Lord of the Rings and you will get a glimpse of Firstborn Academy: Shadow Trials. An enjoyable, fast-paced read, I find myself looking forward to Book 2. Nova, Ameline and Byrne are 3 girlfriends from different backgrounds who learn to fight in the Trials. They are loyal to each other and each has special skills that make them valuable in a war in which they will become soldiers. Walkers are a past and potentially present and much stronger enemy who demand the first born of every human family regardless of that first born's physical or mental capabilities. In return, the Walkers provide protection and provisions to earth's remaining humans. Earth itself has been decimated by human greed and selfishness. Survival depends on the sacrifice. Nova prepared from the beginning to not only be her family's sacrifice (think Katniss), but to one day free all humans by destroying the Walkers.

The book isn't badly written but it is hard to find an original idea. Everything appears to be pulled from other series and wasn't written well enough to hide that. That being said I will read the second book and hope it improves.

I enjoyed the new and unique plot of this story. A lot of the time when you get into paranormal or supernatural reading you tend to find common tropes or plots that all follow a basic pattern. That is not the case with this series and it is refreshing. Rather than the typical Fae, Shifter, Mage, vampire, ect. the author has developed her own race of being unique to this story and it is a creative twist.
Because it is so different from other stories in this same genre it has me invested and I am excited to start on book 2.

I didn't know what to expect from this book when I first began reading it. I'd never heard of the author so obviously didn't have a clue about the writing. I've learned that sometimes going in with no preconceived expectations allows for a deeper enjoyment and anticipation of any future endeavors from the author. Such is the case with the first book of The Firstborn Academy: Shadow Trials. Isla Frost has created a world that is familiar but not, characters similar to us but not quite, and a plotline that only comes from a creative imagination. There is enough similarities between our world and the one she has created that one can easily understand the conflicts the characters face. Her imaginative creatures make me wonder if she deliberately decided to do mashups of several animals, both real and fairy tale esque as well as current and from ancient times. Or was her creativity regarding the creatures stumbled upon and she decided to keep going on that path. Whatever her reasons, she has constructed a strange new world full of familiar dangers in many forms and characters with enough courage to meet them head on! I can't wait to read the next book ole the series will extend to several more after that! Also, if done right, this would make an EXCELLENT movie adaptation! Just saying...

Shadow Trials is the first book in the Firstborn Academy series by Isla Frost.

I’m still trying to decipher the origins of the invaders in this book. I thought it was going to turn out to be a unique twist on fae. Rather I’ve come to discover they might just be alien in nature. Perhaps an odd mesh of the two?

Nova is presumably like all the other firstborn children since the Watchers invaded their planet, decimating a wide portion of the human population. The black fog that spread through Europe, the weird beasts and fauna their magic transformed our planets natural inhabitants into. All deadly. The once beautiful landscapes and picturesque foliage turned horrifyingly monstrous. The Firstborn Agreement calls upon every firstborn, at the age of 17, to journey through the portal to an unknown future for the survival of their families. In return the Watchers offer their protection, and supplies for their daily needs.

The only thing I intend to spoil with this review is that they do indeed travel through the portal to an Academy for training the firstborns. The process, and the outcome is still maddeningly confusing to say the least.

Not much in the character building department honestly, I have high hopes the story will open up more in the next book. Since the Watchers secretive nature’s left much to the imagination. Really intriguing world building though.

The protagonist(s) - Nova, Ameline and Bryn, are bloody marvelous in how realistic they are as people, and their ability to exercise common sense and logic. Fantasy done logically!!!! I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but it is the opposite. The three girls behave like actual queens of sense and skill. And character. And humanity. Loved it! Thank you author!

Fast moving, compelling, confusing, this story leads you through traps and tribulations, almost as blindfolded as the participating characters, waiting for the big reveal. Will it change our Berlin's view of the strange world she inhabits, or will she emerge defiantly of the same mind? Only one way to find out! Next episode, here I come.
