Maid of Dishonor (Love Mishaps Book 1) Kindle Edition
Baseball lover. Plant mama. Eternal friend zone dweller.
I know exactly three things:
1) My heart will forever belong to my best friend, Carter.
2) Carter's heart will never belong to me.
3) I will therefore die alone, surrounded by my houseplants, probably old and grouchy like my eighty-two-year-old landlady, Winifred.
But now Carter's cousin wants my help planning her wedding, while Carter wants my help stopping it. How am I supposed to both plan and sabotage a wedding at the same time? How do I talk to Carter about weddings all day without my heart fracturing? And how, how, how do I ditch this stupid friend zone once and for all?
Carter Ellis
P.E. teacher. Baseball coach. Also, attractive. Very, very attractive.
I am not secretly in love with my best friend. I absolutely am not. That would be stupid and reckless and a terrible idea all around. I swore I would never fall in love, and that's not going to change now.
Except...one tiny little kiss has all sorts of feelings rising in my chest. Feelings I was certain I buried a long time ago. But it doesn't matter; I refuse to give in. I will laugh with her, talk with her, and dry her tears, but I will not fall in love with Samantha Quinn.

This book! Insert many a happy sigh here because your book made me very, very happy! It usually takes me a few days to get through a book because I have limited reading time, but I devoured your entire book within 24 hours and then I still wanted more.
Everything was so wonderful and I consider it a gift that I was able to read it.
First of all (and I know this is a bit of a weird first of all but it must be said), Winifred is an absolute hoot! I adore crotchety old ladies in books and Wini is the best. Her comment about ten years younger had me laughing tears and spontaneously giggling for hours afterward! (That is not an exaggeration, btw.) She was just great!
Now for the MCs. I don’t know any better way to say this (I mean, I could try to be eloquent but this will be more fun) so plug your ears. SAM AND CARTER ARE THE BEST EVER! I WANT TO BE THEIR BEST FRIEND BECAUSE I LOVE THEM SO MUCH! Okay, I’ll stop yelling now. But for reals. I seriously adore them. You wrote a friends-to-more story that was so beautiful, so well done, and I just couldn’t get enough. I think I need a reread because I want more time with these characters. Sam is adorable and quirky. I love her plant babies, obsession with carbs, and her kind, empathetic nature. Carter is so perfect it almost hurts. He’s thoughtful and genuine and loyal, if a bit misguided.
Some of the things I loved about Carter include (and these are all purposely vague so as not to give spoilers; if you know, you know; if you don’t, here’s more incentive to read this):
-Grabbing the garbage can because he just knows Sam will need it
-The crying and tires scale ratings
-What to do for each level
-The driving
-The perfectionism article
-Period cramps and chocolate chips
-Rubbing Sam’s back when she throws up
-The glasses of water
-Grocery shopping
-The growls toward Vance
-The goldfish
-The sunflowers
See? Such a long list. And I could go on. He’s just perfect. He really is amazing book-boyfriend material, but he was just so perfect *for Sam* that I don’t know if he would be as awesome without her. They are a package deal, those two.
The subplot with Maya and Chet/Chad was really well done and I loved it. (Did anyone else forget by the end which was his actual name? No? Just me?) I am sooo looking forward to Maya’s story.
I also loved how much growth your characters went through in this book. They did not stay stagnant and, while they didn’t need each other to grow, they grew best together. Healthy relationship, right there! The backstories for both MCs were so well done and I loved how they overcame their individual demons from their past experiences.
You just did so good! So good! Before I even got halfway through I knew this would be a five-star book. Thanks for proving me right because your book deserves all the stars.
Your forever fan,
Jessica
**Many thanks for the advance copy, which was offered and asked to review if desired. These are my very own thoughts.

I’ve been firmly in camp friends-to-lovers > enemies-to-lovers for forever, and the multitude of FANTASTIC friends-to-lovers stories I’ve read lately have definitely confirmed that for me! Maid of Dishonor was everything fun and exciting and hilarious and swoony that you could want in a romcom!
The premise of this story was fun and unique and made for the perfect backdrop for this love story. Trying to both save and break up a wedding at the same time revealed a lot about Sam and Carter’s characters and made for some wacky and hilarious hijinks!
Sam and Carter’s friendship was so wonderful! Their characters meshed so well together and their dynamic was so fun to read about. I loved watching their relationship slowly shift from friends to something more, even if they tried their hardest to resist it. Carter wan an absolutely SWOONY book boyfriend! I was going through some of my highlights from the ebook and OMG the things he says! 🥰🥰🥰
Gracie’s writing was perfect for this style of story! The humor, the tension, and the emotion all came through the words in such a vivid and immersive way. She brought these characters and this story to life so well that you can’t help but be sucked in and invested in the story from the very beginning!
If you're looking for a unique, laugh-out-loud romcom full of heart and swoon and goodness, definitely check out Maid of Dishonor by Gracie Ruth Mitchell!

I discovered this author through her Christmas novella-which I really enjoyed-and then went on to read the first of her YA books-which was honestly one of the best YAs I’ve read-so I literally jumped at the chance to read an ARC of this one and that was definitely one of the best choices I’ve made!
This romcom had everything and checked all of the boxes! The friends to more trope was exceptionally done, the tension of getting close to the line then pulling back had me feeling all the things and just wanting to shove their faces together (Winifred helped me out on that one). It’s such a delicate dance to give the reader all the romantic feels while not having them actually get together till the end and the author pulled it off! I was all sorts of swoony the whole time and everything played out how it needed to, not too fast but also not so slow that we were in agony. She gave us little glimpses of how it could be and then let it crescendo into an all out fire by the end.
Sam and Carter’s friendship was beautiful even before it turned to more. I loved how much they understood each other and how in tune with the other’s needs and feelings they were. They just made perfect sense together and I was rooting for them from the first page!
The humor was top notch and authentic which is the absolute best kind. I laughed out loud more times than I can count but nothing was there just to be funny, it was all organic to the characters and was just hilarious. And it never crossed to cheesy or eye-roll inducing! There even was a meddling elderly person (the aforementioned Winifred) which I normally don’t love but even she was great! And the wedding they were trying to stop truly deserved to be stopped so I was fully on board with that plan!!
Honestly I have absolutely no complaints and this book will definitely be one of my top reads of the year!
