Compared: A Sweet Romantic Comedy (The Sweet Rom"Com" Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

Meg

Confession: I'm attracted to my student's dad. Let me give you Tyler Dixon's resume: thoughtful, manly, father of the year, widower, ridiculously attractive (basically the opposite of a dad bod).

This might sound like good news for someone like me—someone who dreams of getting married and becoming a mom—but it's not. Getting involved with a parent is grounds for immediate removal at my school, and right now, my fragile heart can't handle being fired.

My mom just died. My boyfriend broke up with me, and to top it all off, my dad started dating again. Stable employment is the only good thing I have. Risking my job and my heart is the most foolish thing I could do.

Tyler

Being a widower isn't like the movies. There's not a block of women knocking on my door, bringing me casseroles every day. No, real life is work, laundry, and groceries—all while being both the mom and the dad. I'm pretty much failing at this single-parent thing.

I don't have time to date.Which is good since the only woman I'm interested in keeps pushing me away: Miss Johnson. Emphasis on the Miss—as in, my son's teacher. It's hard to convince a woman to go out with you when she'll get fired.

But it's either pursuing Meg, despite her job, or the never-ending depths of loneliness—no big deal.

Compared is a witty, heartfelt rom-com with a teacher/parent romance, an irresistible single dad, and swoony chemistry that will have you rooting for a happily-ever-after while keeping the romance closed-door.

Trigger Warning: This book deals with the loss of a spouse and the loss of a parent. Strong themes of grief and mourning are written throughout.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Kortney graduated from the University of Utah with an English degree and spent a few years before motherhood teaching 7th and 8th graders how to write a book report, among other things. But after a reading slump, where no plots seemed to satisfy, Kortney pulled out her laptop and started writing the "perfect" love story...or at least she tried. Writing love stories is her job...just kidding. Her real job is taking care of her five awesome kids and spending time with her husband.

Kortney loves a good romance movie or book, warm chocolate chip cookies, and traveling the world.

Look at Kortney sweeping over the RomCom world now!
Her debut RomCom is a must read for lovers of the genre. From laughing out loud to tearing up, Compared is a well-rounded novel with all the swoon & seriousness. Compared strikes a healthy balance between fluff content and real content. To me, this is the best type of romantic comedy.I related way more than I care to admit to Meg. Comparison truly is the thief of joy. Her journey dealing with grief & bitterness was inspiring. Tyler…sweet, sweet Tyler. What can I say? I want a man like that in my life. Where he at?!I loved the quirky musical touches, the pop culture references, and the witty banter between Tyler and Meg. I want to have words with Diane, but that’s a whole other issue.Overall, if you love a clean wholesome romantic comedy…this book is written for you. Don’t miss out!Content Warnings: grief, loss of loved ones

I absolutely, positively, completely loved every single second of this fantastic story. Compared by Kortney Keisel is my new favorite read of 2023! Meg is an excellently written, highly relatable, and totally endearing heroine. She is a hardworking 2nd-grade teacher who longs for a love all her own, but she’s stuck in a three-year love rut and doesn’t even know it. She’s also in a state of deep grief. At the very start of this story, readers learn that Meg has just lost her beloved mother. I appreciate how Keisel deals with grief in all its forms, and how she shows that different people deal with grief in different ways and that is OK. But back to Meg. Meg is awesome. Like I stated earlier, she is hardworking, but she is also really talented, extremely kind, and quite funny. Her inner monologues had me laughing out loud. Meg is definitely someone I’d want to befriend. Now for Tyler… OH. MY. SWEET. WORD is Tyler a perfect hero! He is physically perfect. He is a hard worker as well. He is the best dad to his son, Krew. And he can flirt like no other. What I really love about Tyler is that he recognizes how great Meg is and chooses to take a risk on a romantic relationship. See, Tyler is a recent widower. 18 months prior to meeting Meg, Tyler lost his beloved wife in a car accident. Obviously, Tyler was destroyed by the loss. But with time, Tyler is able to see that he’s ready to move forward with his life and he wants his life to include Meg. Talk about chemistry — Meg and Tyler have it and then some. There are some amazingly swoony kisses in this book! As far as themes go, my favorite is the discussion on timing after a loss. Specifically, when it’s a “good” time to start relationships again after a spouse has died. I felt that Keisel dealt with this topic respectfully and realistically. The answer is…the timing is different for everyone. Just like everyone grieves in their own way, they also move forward in their own way. And notice I keep saying “move forward.” No one moves on from loss and grief. They move forward. Your deceased loved ones always remain your loved ones, the sadness at losing them remains constant. It’s just that over time you learn to carry the loss in a way that makes room for new experiences and you move forward. A little broken and battered, but forward moving nonetheless. I loved all of these concepts, and felt like this book was not just a fun, swoony Romance, but a cathartic read as well. I loved it all!

Compared is such a great story, and I highly recommend it. If you are a fan of well-written, highly engaging Romances with heart, depth and humor, then you have to grab a copy of this novel ASAP. You’ll love every second!

I purchased a copy of this novel in eBook form from Amazon.com on May 13, 2023, in order to review. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I really like Keisel's new stuff. This was not my fav. I just couldn't like the main character. She was such a mess. Yes she tells everyone she is but it just wasn't my favorite to read. I also felt like the end was a bit much. I liked all the silly fun moments. And the kisses were super swoony.
This is a clean romance

Compared was such a sweet, wholesome, beautiful book!! 😍 I loved how Kortney mixed fluffy romance with deep topics such as the loss of a parent/spouse. It got heavy and I grew emotional so many times. 😭 I’ve read all of the books in her Desolation series and LOVED them, so I automatically knew this book was going to be good, and good it was! 😍

The characters were so well written and relatable! I felt Meg and Tyler’s pain, felt their happiness and love. Meg is such a fun character and I loved that she was a teacher! She’s perfect for that job and you can tell she loves the kids. Her struggles with missing her mom and feeling like her dad’s replacing her is so understandable. I adore Tyler!! 😍 His relationship with his son Krew, his kindness and playfulness with the boys he coaches, his flirting and growing love with Meg, it’s just all so good! His love for his late wife and how she’ll always be a part of him, even as he moves on, is so sweet. 😭 Krew is just adorable I want that kid. I love how he always tells the truth and gets his dad in trouble. 😂😂 Also Meg’s family is the best. 😂 I love their dynamics and can’t wait for the future books, as each one is going to be following a different sibling!

The romance was so good!! 😍 Even mix of relationship and physical, which I loved. It did get a bit steamy at times, but it is an adult book, not YA, and yet it was still clean, which I really appreciated! There’s nothing explicit or anything, just some passionate kisses and such.

The humor in this book was everything. 😆😂 Compared is a romcom and Kortney has the best writing style for it!! I found myself grinning and laughing all throughout it and thoroughly enjoyed it!!

If you like even some of the things I’ve mentioned, YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!! It’s so so good! I highly recommend it and this author, who’s quickly and surely becoming an all time favorite author. 😆😍

5.0 out of 5 stars Don’t “compare” it..
Reviewed in Canada on January 5, 2022
I have to admit I was a little skeptical when I found out it was a rom com and not another YA dystopian. I was worried it wouldn’t even compare to her other books but I was wrong and I’m so glad I was. I started and finished this book in a day because it was so good I couldn’t put it down. Kortney Keisel has easily become my new favourite author. Can’t wait for her to write another book.. in any genre because I know she’ll crush it!

3.0 out of 5 stars A good read

It was a good read but I found Meg annoying and felt bad for Anna Mae. Also Tyler honestly not caring if Meg lost her job was annoying as it was obvious how much she loved being a teacher.
