My Own Best Enemy : A Sweet Romantic Comedy (Apple Valley Love Stories Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,861 ratings

This isn’t a wedding. This is war …

I get it. We were in elementary school. Just a couple of kids on the playground. But after Nash Hendrix called me Enemy instead of Emily, his stupid nickname ruined my life.

Now our best friends are getting married, and they expect me to stand across the aisle from Nash the Ruiner without killing him?

Whatever. I can survive that.

It’s only for one weekend.

Until it’s not.

When I get roped into wedding planning at all the same places Nash is fundraising, I’m ready to blow up our truce.

But the more time we spend together, the more I feel like … not murdering him.

Is it possible Nash and I don't hate each other?

No way. He’s still my enemy.

My big, dumb enemy. My big, dumb, gorgeous, sweet-smelling, smooth-talking —

Emi, you’re doomed.

This heartwarming, hilarious romantic comedy has all the sizzle and swoon, but no explicit content. The entire Apple Valley series can be read in any order, so buy My Own Best Enemy today and get ready to fall in love!

So so sweet!

So so sweet!
This is such a sweet, unique take on the enemies-to-lovers story! I loved being back in Apple Valley l, and getting a glimpse into Mac and Brooke and Daisy’s lives after The Mostly Real McCoy! Julie Christianson’s writing style fits this genre so well and I was fully immersed back in this town with these characters.I loved Nash and Emi! Both of them were such unique and dynamic characters were wonderfully flawed and lovable. One of my favorite things about enemies-to-lovers romances is the almost begrudging way the two characters fall for each other. Like they do everything they can to convince themselves out of their feelings, but there always comes a point when they decide they don’t want to fight them anymore. That was 100% at play in this book and I LIVED IT! The way they worked through their past in a way to move forward was beautiful and emotional and fantastic! The burn was a little slower than I typically like, but the payoff at the end was definitely worth it! All of the funny, awkward, endearing events culminated in a great ending and I loved every minute of it! And I’m sooooo excited for the third book after that teaser at the end!If you’re a fan of small town romances with both hate-to-love and hints of second chance romance as well, filled with Sara Bareilles dance parties and cute geckos and loveable side characters and lots of heart that will leave you with a smile on your face, definitely check out My Own Best Enemy by Julie Christianson! Thanks so much to the author for an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

"Emi brushes herself off. Keeps going. Keeps smiling. She's a total original. Who wouldn't want to be with a woman like that? I want to be with a woman like that. I might want to be with this specific woman."
When Emi’s best friend needs her help planning her upcoming wedding, Emi steps up. She’s going to do whatever she can to make her bestie’s day wonderful. Never mind that she was dumped at a tasting with her now ex-fiancée. Never mind that her enemy, Nash, keeps showing up and getting in her way- with his devastating smiles, his sense of humor, and his charm. Will Emi be able to forgive Nash for the hurt he caused when they were younger? Will they be able to move forward as friends…or maybe more? And will Emi’s secret end up giving her the new start she’s been looking for?
💗
This was such a wonderful story! Emi and Nash’s characters were so fun to get to know better! I enjoyed Emi’s Lucky Charms/sugar commitment and the amazing friend that she was. I thought Nash’s struggle to figure out what he wanted next and the way he couldn’t decide whether he wanted to keep Emi at arms length or wrap her up was written so well. I enjoyed the delightful romance of this story! It is one you won’t want to miss! It is a second in a series so you could read it as a stand alone but you’ll enjoy it even more if you pick up the first one as well! Julie Christianson is a favorite and this series is charming!

I fell in love with Nash and Emi immediately and couldn't get enough of their connection. I laughed, I swooned, my stomach tightened during the emotional moments, and I loved every minute of this story! Nash is the perfect, devoted, protective book boyfriend, and Emi is as unique as she is beautifully flawed. I loved her obsession with learning--it helps that she's a librarian. Sometimes I wanted to shake them so they'd just say what they were feeling, but that makes for the most satisfying happy ending...and it was.

I really enjoyed this story just as much my second time through — in some ways, maybe even more than the first. Nash and Emi are some of the best main characters (although, as much as I’ve tried, I still struggle to choose a top favorite pair from Julie Christianson’s Apple Valley Love Stories 🤷‍♀️). Both Emi and Nash struggle with some big insecurities and fears, and both have to decide if it’s worth it to work through those and move beyond them.

For the audio version, Rock Engle and Stephanie Rose narrated. I enjoyed them both and will be listening again — I liked the representation of Nash more than that of Emi though, overall. For Emi, I think I found her inner thoughts more realistically portrayed than her actual dialogue with others, at least going by what I had imagined/was expecting. Even so, it was good, and I loved it.

Julie Christianson does an excellent job of making her readers feel like we’re there in the midst of this world she’s written. These books can be read as stand-alones (they’re each a complete story), but they’re best read in order because you’ll get the full context and also avoid spoilers that way… not to mention, they’re each excellent! One of my favorite romcom writers – and she only writes clean stories, so I love that I don’t have to sort through reviews to make sure that I’m not going to run across anything I don’t want to read.

I would categorize this book as… a plate of nachos. Something that keeps you coming back for more.

I like the first novel in this series better. The characters were a little deeper and less superficial, and the plot was less predictable. Still, it was fun.

A thought from Nash:
“Emi’s a rollercoaster, and I’m a guy who’s spent most his life aiming for an even keel. She makes my keel decidedly uneven.”

A little something from Emi:
“Then he ducks his head, like an apology, which makes him look not just handsome but also chivalrous. Like knight-in-shining-armor-level chivalry. Like Lancelot.”

I loved this book! It was sweet, romantic and held so much humor. The romance leapt off the pages and made me believe in romantic comedies again. The perspectives from both Nash and Emi really added to the story. Their relationship was filled with just the right amount of quirkiness that had saying no, no, no! But, it really made the story so engaging and I really related with Emi. I loved the message in it, too, of letting go of perfection and past hurts.

“Seriously, Emi. I like it when you get into librarian mode.” More than I should, to be honest. “But you can’t expect anyone to get things right all the time. Nobody’s perfect, and you don’t have to be either.”

If you’re looking for something that is a quick read and will fill your heart with joy, I think you’ll enjoy this clean read. I’m looking forward to going back to her first book, but I couldn’t resist this enemies to more storyline. So if you’d like to start the first book in the Apple Valley Love Stories series “The Mostly Real McCoy” is where I’m headed! The third book, “Pretending I Love Lucy” just released. I would compare this writer with Sarah Monzon, whose books I adore.

This book is one of the best examples of healing and moving on from past romantic trauma. FMC had a failed engagement, and MMC has a father who has been cheating on women his whole life. Both the MCs have pretty much sworn off the ideas of romance and commitment. This book was a journey they took to heal individually and to wholly love and commit to each other, and it was extremely empowering to read it.

[By standard romance novel terms, this one is a long time enemies to lovers + small-town romance.]

Characters were likeable enough, and it was a nice escape from daily life for a while. First book of this author's I've read, and the 3rd installment sounds interesting, so I might give it a go. We'll see ...

They are quirky, show how different our perspective of self vs what others see of you are, and what strength and resilience mean. I loved the story (though as a romantic comedy you know if it going to be a happy ending - but that's why we read them!) Read in one sitting..
