So That Happened: A Romantic Comedy (Donovan Family) Paperback – May 31, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
I spent the night with a hot, grumpy stranger in an airport hotel.
No, not like that. Get your mind out of the gutter. It was just sleeping. And… maybe a little cuddling.
Long story short, I embarrassed the heck out of myself. But at least I never have to see him again.
Except the universe is clearly out to get me, because Monday morning, I arrive at my new job and who’s the first person I see?
Hot stranger himself: Liam Donovan.
AKA my new boss.
AKA Annie, you are so freaking screwed.
While the HR rulebook doesn’t explicitly say you can’t share a bed with your boss, I can read between the lines. And I need this job.
Which is why I have to pretend that night never happened. Luckily for me, sexy as Liam—excuse me, Mr. Donovan—is, he’s surly, rude and totally not my type.
Or so I keep telling myself.
Because I’m starting to think there’s a warm, gooey cinnamon roll with extra frosting lurking beneath that impressive, muscular form.
I promised I’d never choose between my career and love.
But when a scandal threatens to break, that promise could prove impossible to keep…
So That Happened is a laugh-out-loud funny, swoony, closed door romantic comedy. Expect some mild language and suggestive jokes coupled with tons of chemistry and tension, but no explicit scenes.

From the moment I dug into their story, I was utterly hooked. Annie is quirky, lively and so unique. She made me laugh out loud so many times, made me ugly snort laugh with her fun personality. She has to be one of my favourite female characters I’ve ever read! She’s so real and came out with the most hilarious lines that I bizarrely related to and found so endearing and funny. And then you have Liam. Liam is the serious business man with a heart of gold. But there is a charming and fun loving and compassionate and swoonworthy man behind his grumpy and broody exterior. And Annie slowly breaks him down with her persistent and crazy as hell way of lighting up his days. These two couldn’t be more opposite, yet somehow, they just worked. Their road to happily ever after is filled with hilarious antics, an outrageous personality, and so so much more. So That Happened is not only hilarious, but is filled with a lot of heart.
This book is the perfect romantic comedy. It seriously was everything that I want and need from romance. It was romantic. It was funny. It was totally unforgettable. I laughed. I had tears in my eyes. And boy did I ever swoon. I seriously loved each and every second of this book and never wanted it to end. Katie Bailey has totally knocked my socks off with this book!! It is definitely on my list of top reads for 2022 and I look forward to re-reading this book again.
The story follows Annie, a hot mess of a woman who is uprooting her whole life because an office romance went all kinds of wrong. She's moving out of state and starting up a new job, but she'll need to get through the trip there first. When Annie is seated next to a buttoned-up grump, the two don't make the greatest first impression on each other. So when a series of events leads them to sharing a cramped hotel room for the night (with only one bed, of course), it's not the ideal situation for either of them. And when Annie walks into her new workplace on Monday morning, the situation goes from bad to worse when that buttoned-up grump turns out to be her new boss. But it's not long before Annie realizes that she may have misjudged Liam; he's an introvert who seems to get a little sweeter every time she sees him. There's something about Annie that livens Liam up, and he loves the way he feels when he's around her... but he'll need to tread carefully if he hopes to start something up with an employee.
After reading a couple of angsty books in a row, I was looking for something light and funny - and this is exactly that. It had me smiling right away, and I loved how Annie throws Liam off-balance within minutes of meeting him. Having that forced proximity early on was great, which paved the way for their unusual office dynamic. I also found it so refreshing that Liam wasn't a stern alphahole or anything of the sort; he's actually a really nice guy who simply doesn't give a very good first impression. He was also super respectful of Annie and understanding of the power imbalance between them (though his meddling family members were not), so the slow burn worked well. I wouldn't have minded some steam (they only share a few kisses and cuddles), but having Liam be such a gentleman was also fun. Really, the only thing that holds me back from calling this a 5-star read is the fact that a few things could've been developed a little better. I kinda felt like I was reading the second book in a series (with Liam's brother going first), but that doesn't seem to be the case...? There were other things that felt underdeveloped too, but some of those would've detracted from that soft and easy vibe. I wouldn't hesitate to check out more from Bailey in the future, this was very solid overall.

Katie does 3 things amazingly well: describing every detail so you can picture yourself there, making characters you want to always have in your life, and making pop cultural references that tug at your millennial heart.
Is Liam Donovan going to be a cinnamon roll or crunchy granola? Maybe a Venus fly trap? Will Annie Jacobs overcome foot-in-mouth syndrome and learn to not hide in the washroom?
This story is a true rom-com. It was filled with romance (and very detailed kisses) and comedy. I feel like only my life could match Annie’s in ‘what can go wrong will go wrong’.
From an unexpected and untimely meeting to opening up and being honest, Annie and Liam are loveable characters you root for!
Maybe Lana Mae’s story will be next? I’d love to see more of the Donovan family in the future!
This story follows the romance between Annie and Liam. Two polar opposites who meet on a plane and butt heads. Unfortunately for them, they are required to spend much more time together. First at a hotel, where they share ONE BED. Afterwards at work, in the same office..
I know Liam is supposed to be a grump but this man drops that facade with Annie sooo fast. He is actually such a kind and caring man. I would be doing everyone a disservice if I did not mention that he is temporarily the sole caretaker of his niece for a large duration of the book. You see the funny, sweet uncle side of him that he doesn’t let everyone see.
Their relationship build from colleagues, to friends, to lovers and during that time they help bring out a different side to each of them. I love how Annie made him see that it’s okay to be less strict sometimes and be carefree.
Additionally, the side characters were so fun! I am so eager to see what the author does with Liam’s sister’s romance. Though I wouldn’t mind seeing how Prisha got together with her partner, or Luke would be exciting too.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a funny, swoony and lighthearted read.
