The crime scene at St. Marguerite€™s cathedral in New Orleans is shocking, even to seasoned detectives like Rick Bentz and Reuben Montoya. A novice nun named Sister Camille has been found dressed in a yellowed bridal gown and viciously garroted, her body covered with an altar cloth. Valerie Houston is devastated by her sister€™s death. For weeks, she€™d begged Camille to leave St. Marguerite€™s, where she seemed determined to live as some kind of martyr. But Camille had a knack for making bad choices €” she joined the convent in part because she€™d fallen for Val€™s soon-to-be ex-husband, Slade. Convinced the police aren€™t doing enough, Val begins to investigate. Slade, on a mission to repair their marriage, is determined to help her. But the deeper Val€™s inquiries go, the more twisted the case becomes. St. Marguerite€™s is far from the tranquil retreat many believe, and everyone, from handsome Father Frank O€™Toole to the mysterious Mother

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Someone is strangling novice nuns in Jackson's terrifying if overwrought seventh Bentz and Montoya novel (after Malice). When NOPD homicide detectives Reuben Montoya and Rick Bentz arrive at the first crime scene, the chapel of St. Marguerite's Convent, Montoya recognizes the murder victim, Sister Camille, as his old high school girlfriend, Cammie Renard. In another coincidence, the novice sister who discovered Camille's body, Lucia Costa, once dated Montoya's brother. On top of that, one of the prime suspects is a high school classmate of Montoya's, Fr. Francis O'Toole, who may have had an affair with the victim. As Cammie's sister, Valerie, a former Texas cop now a New Orleans Garden District B&B owner, struggles with a surprise visit from her estranged husband, more nuns succumb to a crazed killer. Val learns more than she bargained for about her past—and Cammie's—at a nearby orphanage in a creepy thriller sure to please Jackson's many fans. (Apr.)

Both Lisa and her sister, Nancy Bush, began their writing careers right then, and lo, these many years later Lisa has published seventy-five plus novels and has no plans to slow down anytime soon.

Wow! What a wild read! Montoya & Bentz are put on a crazy murder of a nun that turns out to be an old girl friend of Montoya! The twists and just keep coming!

Bentz & Montoya are back....but the New Orleans detectives are getting a bit stale. Jackson is prolific in her authorship, but this dynamic duo need a twee of a refresher.
With that said, it's always great to see New Orleans through new eyes.

Superb story line. Great plot with lots of twist and unexpected things happening. Kept me wanting to see what will happen next

Just when you think the cases Bentz and Montoya work can't get any crazier...
I'm starting to think that maybe Lisa Jackson has some serious mental issues! And maybe I never wanna go back to NOLA lol. (Not serious!) Don't read this book when you don't have time to read it all, and don't worry it will keep you up all night trying to make sense of the murders of the kind sisters!

A suspenseful thriller that has more romance in the first third of the book than mystery. This novel also introduces us to new characters, Valerie and Slade, who dominate the story more than favorites Bentz and Montoya.

Suspenseful plot lines are developed, but continuity is lacking. The author needs to use spacing between paragraph lines when topics change.

Unfortunately this was not a favorite in the Bentz/Montoya series for this reader. Heavy Catholic overtones prevail in this story of archaic St. Marguerite's nunnery and the deteriorating St. Elsinore's orphanage where nuns are being murdered. Is Father John alive and wreaking havoc in New Orleans again? You'll have to read to find out.

I enjoyed reading this book with its twists and turns but somehow Val didn’t seem like a real person to me and when did she find time to operate her bread & breakfast?
Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2023
Everything points to the killer from the past, Father John. The leads are right and the timings is right. But they have to go through the paces. To find a killer. Val is former cop and one of the nuns killed is her sister. Her leads are real screwed up and her almost ex is staying to protect her as she investigates what she feels is to compromised police. After all Montoya was her sister’s first lover.

Did not figure out who the killer was. To many twists and turns. Sad at what happens near the end. Good book. See if you do better than I did.

I was drawn into the story immediately. The characters compelling and the mystery grew slowly, but steadily. After each revelation I couldn’t wait for the next one!
I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good mystery.

A little too much repitition, but, overall a very good story. Who would have thought that a nun could have murdered so many.
