Private Vegas (Private, 4) Hardcover – January 26, 2015
Purchase options and add-ons
Las Vegas is a city of contradictions: seedy and glamorous, secretive and wild, Vegas attracts people of all kinds-especially those with a secret to hide, or a life to leave behind. It's the perfect location for Lester Olsen's lucrative business. He gets to treat gorgeous, young women to five-star restaurants, splashy shows, and limo rides-and then he teaches them how to kill.
Private Jack Morgan spends most of his time in Los Angeles, where his top investigation firm has its headquarters. But a hunt for two criminals leads him to the city of sin-and to a murder ring that is more seductively threatening than anything he's witnessed before. Chilling and marvelous, Private Vegas brings James Patterson's Private series to a sensational new level.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2015I really didn't care for Private India or Australia as I think Jack makes the books interesting and he was missing in those stories. In this book he was front and center so we were back to thrilling story lines.
However, why call it Las Vegas? The main stories were in LA. Yes there was maybe one or two Vegas chapters but to me not enough to title a book. But what do I know, and what do I care about the title. I only care if I enjoyed the book, which I did. It entertained me and I found it to be a good read.
I am not sure the ending was believable but maybe it is a lead in to the next Private book. What do I know except Del Rio needs to learn to control his temper, Jack and Justine need to work it all out and somehow Patterson needs to kill off Tommy so Jack can lead a life without stressing over his no good brother.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2015PRIVATE VEGAS by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro is the sixth (I believe) in the Private series. The big mystery is why it is titled Private Vegas when the major part of the story takes place in Los Angeles. Our protagonist, Jack Morgan, is a handsome and tough former Marine helicopter pilot shot down in Afghanistan. He is also a woman magnet who cherishes his sleek Lamborghini. Morgan owns and operates a high-end worldwide investigative firm. Jack is a nice guy unless you are on the wrong side of the law. He also has a twin brother, Tommy, who is angry with him because Jack inherited their criminal father’s business as well as several millions after the father was murdered in prison. Tommy stalks Jack who fears he will someday try to kill him. Private Vegas is an easy and enjoyable book to read with short and inviting chapters, however, it bounces from one story line to another with seemingly little connective narration.
The story starts with Jack and his investigators in hot pursuit of two scumbags who assault and rape unsuspecting Rodeo Drive high-maintenance female shoppers and leave a destructive path through several upscale Hollywood hotels. Because these monsters have diplomatic immunity law enforcement can’t touch them. In another scene Jack’s people discover an over zealous group of wealthy, spoiled teenagers strung out on drugs who despise the world of adulthood because they believe their parents and wealthy friends have destroyed the world’s delicate environmental balance. They soon come to a destructive end. The court scenes in the trial of one of Jack Morgan’s closest friends and top investigators—a fellow Marine who saved his life in Afghanistan--makes for tense reading and may be the most intriguing part of the book.
Private Vegas is definitely more exciting than the two previous Private works, Down Under and India, but still doesn’t reach the level of Patterson’s best. With all of its short comings, I did enjoy Jack Morgan’s adventures and the book in general. But I am hard-pressed to give it more than a weak 4 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2023I love Patterson and have read literally dozens of his books. The Alex Cross series was a highlight.
Found this book was not up to the writing style and high standard I expect from these books. For some time it seems to me that many of the series that Patterson does start out extremely strong but then fade out as more books come out. Maybe I am nuts or way off base but it almost seems to me that Patterson almost always creates an amazing character that is very easy to become attached to and is deep and interesting. But then future books in the series use that great character but don't continue to develop it, having the character grow and change over time. I don't know if that is because the initial creation is just him and the ongoing series is a partnership with another author and that development is hard to maintain if it is a team writing him/her? Regardless this was a good book but not one of the best.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2015There are at least three plots running separately at first, but who's counting? Not I, because Patterson weaves them around so artistically that you never get confused, and then they eventually merge. The book has intriguing backstories and rich character development. And, did I forget to mention? It has all the action you'd ever want, along with provocations such as two scumbags getting away with murder, literally, while shielded by their diplomatic immunity. To be trite, I really did find this one hard to put down.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2015Good book worth reading. But not as good to me as the other Private books. I didn't think the stories were as good as they are normally with a James Patterson book. I'll tell a little but don't want to spoil the book for you. The story doesn't have as many twist but a big one at the end that I think you'll agree with. The book tells a lot of stuff you already know basically telling stuff aost word for word from Jacks past and more of him having to deal with his twin brother Tommy once again. I Was really looking foreward to this book, not as good as the others but still with reading. I'm die hard James Patterson so I'm still looking foreward to the next private and Future Michael Bennett as well as others I've already preordered. If you really like this kind of writing you should really check out " The target" by Catherine Coulter. Just finished it and I must say five stars on it. First book I read of hers but definitely not last.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2016I love James Patterson's books and have read many of them. This book did not disappoint me. I read it in 2 days. The chapters flow into the next chapter and it's hard to put down. You just keep reading until you're done. I love a good mystery and this book is good. Couldn't wait to read the next Private book. Recommend this book to anyone who love mysteries. The only thing I wondered is why it was called Private Vegas because most of the book took place elsewhere.

I loved the book like the rest of the Private series!!! Hope a lot more will follow due to the storyline of Jack and his brother.
