The Cinema of George Lucas Hardcover – March 1, 2005

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 30 ratings

A gifted storyteller in the epic tradition, a masterful director and editor, and a visionary leader in the field of visual effects and production techniques, George Lucas has made an enormous contribution to the art and culture of our time. The Cinema of George Lucas presents new insights into the work of this innovative and influential filmmaker, whose groundbreaking technical achievements and creation of enduring modern mythologies have forever changed both film and science fiction.
Drawing on exclusive new interviews, oral histories, and unprecedented access to the Lucasfilm archives, including documents such as shooting schedules and production notes, author Marcus Hearn analyzes Lucas's personal journey as a director over four decades - beginning with his student work - while also delving into his projects as a writer, an editor, and a producer. He also discusses Lucas's many other accomplishments in the film industry, including the formation of Industrial Light & Magic, Skywalker Sound, and LucasArts.
The book is lavishly illustrated with many images that have never or rarely been seen, such as stills from Lucas's student films made at the University of Southern California, material from the director's cut of his early science-fiction film THX 1138, and production shots and behind-the-scenes photos from, among other films, the very first Star Wars film, the beloved classic American Graffiti, the Indiana Jones adventures - and the forthcoming Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith (to be released on May 19, 2005).

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The life and career of the one-man cinematic revolution that is George Lucas gets a lush visual treatment in Hearn's frankly adoring and uncritical coffee-table book, though there's plenty of smart text underpinning the artwork as well. The first two of the book's eight chapters are best, covering Lucas's childhood and student filmmaking days at USC, which culminated in the 1971 masterpiece THX 1138 and 1973's iconic American Graffiti. Hearn deftly portrays this heady period in Lucas's life, in which the director was furiously experimenting with the form and working inside the short-lived San Francisco filmmaking collective American Zoetrope with pals Francis Ford Coppola, master editor Walter Murch and legendary cinematographer Haskell Wexler. This section is elaborately illustrated with photographs, publicity stills and script excerpts, and the photos of young Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss and Lucas himself will amuse fans. Once Hearn begins to delve into Lucas's rise into the cinematic stratosphere with Star Wars, and the creation of his mini Hollywood in the Bay Area, however, the book fails. Hearn's worshipful tone doesn't allow him to satisfyingly explain how this long-haired rebel turned into the mini-mogul that he is today. Still, this is a crucial addition to the libraries of not just Star Wars aficionados but all lovers of modern cinema. (Mar.)

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School–With this impeccably constructed coffee-table book, movie aficionados have the opportunity to explore 20th-century science fiction and American culture through the work of an immensely talented director. Film clips, scripts, and interviews help readers to review his vast output. Hearn describes Lucas's childhood, his college filmmaking career at USC, his work with the American Zoetrope collective of San Francisco, his friendship with director Francis Ford Coppola, the making of the classic coming-of-age film American Graffiti, and more. The volume includes photographs of Harrison Ford, Ron Howard, Cindy Williams, and Billy Dee Williams; reproductions of film posters and publicity stills; and the action-packed, movie-shooting schedules of Star Wars and the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, as well as a history of Lucas's educational foundation. Although the book is highly readable, the author sometimes dips into sentimentality and hero worship, and he only briefly discusses the director's movie-business enterprises (Lucasfilm, Ltd., Skywalker Ranch, Industrial Light Magic, and LucasArts), known as the San Francisco Bay Area's mini Hollywood.–ayo dayo, Chinn Park Regional Library, Prince William, VA

Just when I thought Charles Camplin's GEORGE LUCAS: THE CREATIVE IMPULSE would be the most beautiful book ever produced on Lucas's career, along comes Hearn's THE CINEMA OF GEORGE LUCAS which, style-wise, aesthetically and visually, blows the former out of the water! A biography and a visual history (many photos never seen before) of the life and career of STAR WARS mastermind George Lucas, this coffee table-esque masterpiece should be the prototype for potential works on Spielberg, Kubrick and Scorsese...these guys all deserve the deluxe treatment after so many years of incredible talent and entertainment! For all STAR WARS, THX-1138, GRAFFITI and Lucas fanatics in general, this hefty beauty will make a very worthy addition to your book collection, not to mention offer readers with a detailed glimpse into the mystery man behind The Force. The text offers information that not even Lucas junkies would know and, as a graphic designer, I was most-impressed with the layout of this entire book...the original delays on its publication were put to excellent use! Most enthusiastically recommended!!!

My boys have always struggled finding biographies for school. There are many wonderful biographies out, but it still seems to be challenging finding one of interest for my boys. We purchased this with the intention to donated it to the school after my son wrote is book report. It has not made it to school yet because my boys are still enjoying this book. It is long for a book report so we purchased another book that was more manageable for a report. I think it this book was well done. It is fun for all ages.

When I first found out about this book, I immediately came to Amazon and read the reviews listed with this one. I must whole heartedly agree with my fellow reviewers that this book is filled with a lot of never before seen photos and information about George Lucas that the public has never had access to before. It is graphically beautiful. When I first received my copy, I literally couldn't put it down for hours. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning more about the man behind the Star Wars saga.

For the value of $6.00, I was very excited when I got it. I have not read it all the way through yet, but it has given me a visual representation of his life and that is what I was looking for in this book. Great.

By now, most people have seen one George Lucas film, just as they have most likely seen a film by Steven Spieldberg. This wonderfully photographed and informative coffee table book has everything you need to know about the directoral genius and the history of his films. It all began in the late 60's, when he and Steven Spieldberg graduated from USC in Southern California. They would both go on to become leading American film directors. Lucas's first attempt at film was a successful student film- THX 1138, a chilling science fiction film about a futuristic, militant society akin to George Orwell's 1984. Already, there are signs of his most recognizable movie Star Wars as in that film a young man defies the oppressive regime and attempts to rescue himself but fails to do so. In the mid 70's, Lucas had already created the storylines for his Star Wars saga. It is a 9 part saga. We have seen Episodes 1-6. Beginning in 1977 with Episode 4 A New Hope, the film that won him instant fame. The book recounts the making of the film on location, the casting of Mark Hammill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford- actors who at that time were in need of a successful film role. The book even details original scenes that were cut off. In 1980, The Empires Strikes Back was released and it proved to be the highest grossing sequel of a film ever made. 1983's Return of the Jedi, as wonderfully made as it was, has never been as successful as the first two, though it raps the saga nicely. In 1999, Lucas released Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, the first installment of his space opera which tells of the growth and downfall of the young Anakin Skywalker who becomes Darth Vader. 2002's Attack of the Clones dealt with the Clone Wars and the budding romance of Padme and Anakin. 2005's Revenge of the Sith describes the Sith takeover and the destruction of the Old Republic and extinction of the Jedi, all except for Yoda, Obi-Won and Padme's twins Luke and Leia. Lucas had a hand in the making of Spieldberg's popular Indiana Jone series. We have seen how he has become a film-maker who relies on great stories and the magic effects of cinema and computer graphic/digital technology. He is the only director who can point us to the path of how future movies will be made.
