Lewis Carroll was a photographer?

Lewis Carroll was a photographer?
Lewis Carroll, famous for writing the children's classic, Alice in Wonderland, was also a very talented photographer. The first photograph above was taken by Mr. Carroll. It's Alice Liddell, who was the inspiration for Alice in Wonderland. Cameras were a relatively new invention in the 1800's, and were very difficult to use, yet Mr. Carroll has his own photography studio and thriving photography business. The book provides a fascinating examination of Mr. Carroll's development as a professional photographer. His favorite subjects, were, as you might guess, children. His photographic style was unconventional, to easy the least. Often he would have his subjects strike unusual poses, which to me was an expression of his creativity and originality. The book includes 63 of his photographs, but there are so many more that were not included. Overall is was a great read.

Another face of this English author who produced one of the masterpieces & all time favorites of English literature "Alice In Wonderland" which was printed during the height of Queen Victoria's reign. It went on to become a classic piece of literature
which spawned memorable movies which not only interpreted his original idea but at times came up with a broader psychoanalytic
version of the characters & the heroine. The photographs are in black & white but the intensity of the subjects gives one the idea
that Mr. Dodgson, the photographer, was in command of both subject & camera & made the book well worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Photographs of Lewi Carroll

Apparently Gernsheim only discovered Lewis Carroll's photographic work when he was researching into Julia Margaret Cameron's work.
There is an interesting introduction which I am using with Colin Ford's book on Carroll's photographs. It is not a large book but it is ok.

1.0 out of 5 stars very poor photo reproduction
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 28, 2017
The reproduction of the photos in this hardback book is very poor indeed. They are blurred and mid-tones and highlights darkened, resulting in chronic lack of contrast. This is not because the photos are old - the same photos reproduced in the paperback version of this book are much clearer. So I would not recommend this hardback version of the book if you wish to view the photos.
