Manhattan kingpin.

She wears hers on her sleeve...

Justine is devoted to tracking down deadbeat husbands and fighting for fair working conditions. When her mission brings her face-to-face with Jack, she's shocked to find the man behind the criminal empire is considerably more charming and honorable than many "gentlemen" she knows.

Wonderful conclusion to the series, can be standalone, excellent!
Joanna Shupe finishes her amazing Uptown Girls series with The Devil of Downtown. Set in Gilded Age New York, the book focuses on uptown do-gooder Justine Greene, who spends all of her time helping the less fortunate. Her current cause is tracking down wife-deserters, and her search leads her to the lair of Jack Mulligan, the downtown crime boss who has united nearly all of New York's gangs into a criminal empire. What Justine isn't expecting, however, is that Jack is cultured, handsome, and surprisingly honorable. Jack agrees to help Justine with her investigations, and in turn is captivated by her. However, can they bridge the rift between their two worlds? This book was astounding! Joanna Shupe writes the most amazing characters, and no matter how unlikely their circumstances seem, she always pulls it off. Justine is capable and strong without being brash. She is unapologetic about who she is and what she wants, which is so refreshing to read. Jack is completely considerate of Justine at every turn - consent in this book is explicit all the way through, and it is sooo sexy.I really enjoyed this book, as well as this whole series, and can't wait to read what Shupe has in store next!

Jack Mulligan has one rule he lives by Qui n’avance pas, recule - who does not advance retreats. He is the Kingpin in New York - ruling over his territory ruthlessly. Jack has everyone he needs in his pocket and he doesn't do anything without a favor in return.

When Justine Greene crosses paths with Mulligan - she is in dangerous territory. She knows how dangerous Mulligan can be, but still she is left with no choice but asking him for help in solving a case that she is working on on behalf of her charity. Mulligan is willing to help Justine, but he doesn't offer his services freely and of course there will be a favor in return.

This favor is what starts the unusual relationship between "do-gooder" Justine and Kingpin Mulligan. When their dalliances with one another become more frequent and they begin to long for each other - will either of them stand a chance to be with one another?

I absolutely LOVED The Devil of Downtown. The chemistry between Mulligan and Justine was explosive from the moment they met with one another. The sexy times between the two were next level hot hot hot.

The way Justine was able to see underneath Jack's tough exterior and not be judgmental about his upbringing said a lot about her character. But how long do they have with one another before they realize that their worlds do not align. How could a Kingpin possibly have a future with a woman who is set on doing good in the world.

There were quite a few times where this book brought me to tears. And I ached for both Jack and Justine. I wanted there to be a way that these two made it work and I was rooting for them until the very end.

I've read a quite a few historical romances and honestly this was one of the first ones that I have read that was set in America. I truly enjoyed learning about New York in the 1800's and it was a refreshing change in scenery from typical historical romances that are set in London or Europe.

This was my first novel by Joanna Shupe, but most definitely won't be my last!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found the heroine to be likable, but also real and with flaws, and I like that the pacing was really good. I didn’t find myself getting bored. I was engaged the entire time. The romance was sweet and believable. I really felt their chemistry and connection. another knock out from Joanna Shupe four stars.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It's so bittersweet to finish this series. I've enjoyed the previous books a lot, but Justine and Jack's book is my favorite. Once I started, I didn't want to stop. I both listened and read this one and Justine Eyre is phenomenal in this series. I'm always impressed by her performances.

The "I hate everyone but you" trope is one of my favorites and Jack is perfection in this role. He's such a fascinating anti-hero and I loved how unapologetically ruthless he was with everyone else besides Justine. Watching her break down his walls brick by brick and seeing their relationship evolve was amazing. They had such scorching chemistry and the sexual tension between them built up so perfectly. I really wasn't sure what to expect from Justine, but she surprised me in a good way. I loved her kind heart, strength, and loyalty. She isn't flashy like her two sisters and it's that quiet determination that endeared her to me. She is the polar opposite of Jack and it worked so well. The ending felt a bit rushed and was a little too convenient, but I definitely recommend this series. I'm excited to dive into the rest of Joanna Shupe's backlist.

The premise of this book had me blowing through books one and two (which I also really liked!) but this was like tailor-made for me - I mean nearly bad boy with a code of honor and uptown girl with a core of steel who is genuinely kind?! I love it. I am here for it. And this totally delivered.

Justine Green is a prickly heroine with a core of steel and is literally ignored and overlooked and bears the brunt of her sisters' hypocrisy from page one. And she just keeps living her life - with NO apology and just working around any obstacle in her path. At times Justine was almost unbearably naive but in fact, she just truly wanted to believe in the good of humanity and acted according to that belief. Not to mention her legit avenging angel act near the end of the book. Jack Mulligan is essentially a gangster with a code of honor that is unbreakable. He has no idea what to make of the inherently kind uptown princess but he will be damned if anyone hurts her. I mean this man... he even made bowling sexy. BOWLING.

But what really sold me on this story was that it has all of the amazing dynamics that make me love modern romance - sex-positivity and discussions of politics (including rich, white privilege, and gender equality) are embedded in the bedrock of this amazing book.

Side Note: I weirdly want more stories about Otto, Rye, and Cooper - who are VERY minor characters but I always get distracted by those...

Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Tropes: slow burn, interclass romance, arm porn, sexy games, gangster with a heart of gold, social justice warrior

Subgenre: historic romance/ Guilded Age NYC

CW/ TW: minor violence on-page, multiple mentions of toxic marriages and spousal abandonment, death of a parent (off page)

An 1890’s gang scene and seemingly amorous free wheeling attitude might indeed be a turn off in today’s society. Indeed, one might find it off putting. However, by keeping it in perspective and capturing it in this book with the norms and behaviour of that era does not seem so bad. Blend in romance with gang, sex and violence in the 1890s and you get this book. For me, it was a good read.

This book for me was amazing. Jack was just something else, such a beautifully written hero. I loved Justine too obviously but I can’t explain how much I loved Jack. The way he spoke to Justine made my heart clench because it was so lovely.

4.0 out of 5 stars Romance histórico em New York
Reviewed in Brazil on September 5, 2022

Hated this book from the onset...this authors lead men are manipulative, controlling, oversexed man whores who are most definitely not hero’s. This one toon it only comes with a STI, but as with the rest of this authors leading men have no capacity for love, just sex...what makes these women think they are anything different to these men then their regular sex.
Really gave this author a good chance because I had read the Knickerbocker series and enjoyed a few...but cannot continue with flighty, unrealistic females and oversexed lead men with no moral character.
