About the Author

Andrew Sean Greer is the Pulitzer Prize winning author of six works of fiction, including the bestsellers The Confessions of Max Tivoli and Less. Greer has taught at a number of universities, including the Iowa Writers Workshop, been a TODAY show pick, a New York Public Library Cullman Center Fellow, a judge for the National Book Award, and a winner of the California Book Award and the New York Public Library Young Lions Award. He is the recipient of a NEA grant, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. He lives in San Francisco.

At 50ish, Arthur Less is content in life. He is happy with his partner, Freddy Peku. Although a successful "Minor American Author”, Less still yearns for recognition. Things are fine until he learns that his first love, Richard Brownburn, died leaving him to assist Richard’s x-wife, Marian in putting together the funeral. He is also left with years of past due rent bills that he must pay is he wishes to keep the San Fransisco bungalow that was previously Richards. Shocked, Less is determined to raise the money and keep their bungalow so he sets off on a speaking tour, accepting any job offer “it’s nice to be wanted”, crossing the US to earn the money they need. For Less, a chronically insecure and uncertain person, this is a big commitment.

Along the way we meet an author who insists Less take him to California to see his daughter before he’ll agree to an interview (that Less is to earn money he desperately needs for writing), an acting troupe that is putting on a live performance of Less' book, another minor American author (this one Black) with the same name whose jobs find their way into our Lesses appointment book, and Less' surprising feelings when meeting, at last, his father and new wife. He also meets an wide collection of people who ask him to identify his ethnic origin as they seem to hear an accent in his speech, by which they really mean “Are you a homosexual?"

The story is told from Freddy's point of view; however, Freddy has too much time to think while Less is on the road, and he finds himself wondering if Less is the right guy for him.

The similarities between "Less is Lost” and the previous “Less” (2018 Pulitzer Prize winner) are hard to miss. In both books Less is traveling. Previously he roamed Europe, this time he's in the US. A new speaking engagement arises whenever Less’ literary agent calls. Through these engagements and the mishaps in between we learn the story of Less himself and the life of a writer. This has a lot of similarities to the original. Yet, it is entertaining, fun and well written. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

After the passing of Arthur’s former flame, the renowned poet Robert Brownburn, Arthur learns his residence in San Francisco, which he once shared with Robert and now with his love Freddy Pelu, is not as secure in his possession as he’d imagined. So off Arthur goes to rectify circumstances. Whether he survives the desert or the ravages of a hurricane, Arthur encounters adventures that enable Greer’s marvelous storytelling to offer an ingenious blend of tragedy and comedy.

As Arthur journeys from the Southwest to the Northeast, his innocent, good-willed intentions leave their mark, but never in the ways he hopes. Happenstance accidents, mistaken identities, and unrecognized clues leave him baffled and oftentimes feeling humiliated, yet he never ceases in yearning to find a way forward. The sad and hilarious events that befall Arthur make for a plot that had me smiling and rooting for Arthur with every obstacle he faces.

While charting the travails of the loveable Arthur Less, Greer is brilliant at meditating on life’s ungraspable phenomena: love, mortality, and purpose. Greer is also a magician of his craft—giving us breathtaking prose replete with superb images and musings that only a writer at the pinnacle of his talents can deliver. I bought this for when I travel. The story seemed good but the way it is written, the narrator, or the author, sounds like someone outside the story, an observer not involved in the story. Sort of written in a third person, detached. It's disorienting and I quickly lost interest in the story itself.

Well this book is fantastic!! The continuation of Less which clearly if you loved that you’ll love this, if you haven’t read Less then definitely read that first. I love this authors way of writing and it is a comic but poignant wonderful book, and it did genuinely make me laugh out loud in one particular bit which I can’t remember when I last did whilst reading. Arthur Less is a very human very relatable and lovely character, and Andrew Sean Greer is genius have now read all the rest of his books as well.

I think it’s safe to say that the author tried to recreate the same success he had with the first book, but unfortunately he failed to do so.
It’s pleasant to read, but not as charming and funny as the first one.
