The U-505 was a German submarine that was captured in battle by the US in June of 1944. James Wise (a former US naval intelligence officer) narrates the life of the vessel from its 1941 construction in Hamburg to its more recent home at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Including numerous photographs throughout, Wise describes the u-boat's fortunes in World War II, the circumstances of its capture, and the long journey down the St. Lawrence River and through four of the Great Lakes to Chicago. He also offers two appendixes discussing operating and living on board the U-505 and the historical evolution of the submarine.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“U-505: The Final Journey is a must-have book for any serious student of World War II German submarines. It offers a unique perspective on the operation and construction of U-boats. It should interest any submarine aficionado, especially those interested in World War II. At the same time, it provides an entertaining and informative history of U-505, with many insights into life aboard these vessels. It is a book worth reading.” —Nautical Research Journal

this book is written about my great uncle...I have, in years past as a child, had many conversations with my great uncle regarding his exploits in the U. S. Navy...after I did my 20 years it was important to me to get all the books that he wrote as well as those written about him...this book does a great job of letting you know what was going on on both sides prior to the capture, during the capture and after the war.

So much more that a history of U-505 this book provides background on the U-Boat war from both Allied and German viewpoints. The photos are outstanding. I saw the U-505 at the Museum when it was outside so need to plan a trip back to see inside the exhibit.

Enjoyed this book. Enjoyed learning all about the submarine and how it was captured. Visited the museum in Chicago but did not have enough time to fully appreciate the whole story behind this submarine, so having the book was very beneficial to filling in the gaps.

I was through the U-505 in the early 70s when it was still outside. The $2 booklet from the museum is still floating around somewhere in the bookshelves so I had a basic idea of the capture story. This book is so much more. It has a little bit of background on the war, the battle of the Atlantic, the weapons systems used (both sides), as well as the capture & disposition of the sub since. Printed well on good paper.
