Born in Torquay in 1890, Agatha Christie began writing during the First World War and wrote over 100 novels, plays and short story collections. She was still writing to great acclaim until her death, and her books have now sold over a billion copies in English and another billion in over 100 foreign languages. Yet Agatha Christie was always a very private person, and though Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple became household names, the Queen of Crime was a complete enigma to all but her closest friends.

Book Review: Sleeping Murder

Book Review: Sleeping Murder
Sleeping Murder is a classic mystery novel by Agatha Christie featuring her beloved detective Miss Marple. First published in 1976, the novel is set in the post-war era and tells the story of a young woman named Gwenda Reed who moves into a new home in England with her husband. However, strange occurrences begin to happen in the house, leading Gwenda to believe that something sinister happened there in the past. With the help of Miss Marple, Gwenda sets out to uncover the truth behind the house’s dark history. One of the things that makes Sleeping Murder so enjoyable to read is Agatha Christie’s masterful storytelling. She builds suspense and intrigue from the very beginning of the novel and keeps the reader guessing until the very end. Each chapter reveals new clues and suspects, leading the reader down a twisting path of deception and misdirection. The plot is intricately crafted and meticulously planned, leaving no loose ends or plot holes. The pacing is just right, with moments of high tension and moments of calm reflection, creating a satisfying balance between action and character development.Another aspect of the novel that stands out is its setting. The story takes place in England in the mid-20th century, and Agatha Christie does an excellent job of evoking the atmosphere of the time and place. From the descriptions of the streets and buildings to the social customs and attitudes of the characters, the setting feels authentic and immersive. The reader can easily imagine themselves walking the same streets as Gwenda and Miss Marple, feeling the same sense of unease and apprehension as they delve deeper into the mystery. The characters in Sleeping Murder are also well-drawn and engaging. Gwenda is a likable and relatable protagonist, struggling to come to terms with her own past while also uncovering the secrets of her new home. Miss Marple, as always, is a charming and insightful detective, using her years of experience and knowledge of human nature to solve the case. The other characters in the novel are equally well-developed, each with their own motivations and secrets that contribute to the overall mystery. One of the most interesting aspects of Sleeping Murder is its themes. The novel explores the idea of memory and how our past experiences shape our present selves. Gwenda is haunted by memories of a house she knew as a child, but cannot remember clearly. She is forced to confront these memories when she moves into a new house that triggers her sense of déjà vu. Similarly, the other characters in the novel are shaped by their past experiences, which influence their actions and motivations. The novel suggests that the past is always present, and that we must confront it in order to move forward.Sleeping Murder is an excellent mystery novel showcasing Agatha Christie’s writing talent. It has all the elements that make her novels so popular: a well-crafted plot, engaging characters, and an immersive setting. But it also explores deeper themes of memory and identity, making it a thought-provoking read. Whether you’re a fan of Agatha Christie or just a lover of classic mystery novels, Sleeping Murder is a must-read.

The last Miss Marple mystery is terrific. It is spooky, mystifying, and well laid out. It’s the story about a newly married couple who have bought a house in the English countryside. Gwenda feels right from the first moment that she is “home” in the house. When she experiences a frightning “vision” of a dead body in the house, and then later hears a famous quote that stirs memories, she is terrified that the place is haunted.

She and Giles, with the eventual help of the nosey, clever, Miss Marple, dig to discover the mystery. Who was the dead body Gwenda saw? What happened to it? Repeatedly Miss Marple and others tell them to “let sleeping murders lie” and leave it alone. It could be dangerous. They may learn something they wish they hadn’t. But the couple can’t seem to do that.

The death (murder?) is closer to Gwenda than she thinks, although it happened 19 years earlier. It tragically affects her entire family. Yes, they should have left it alone, for there are other deaths, and eventually the terrible knowledge of the truth.

I was positive that I knew who committed the crime (and why) at the 2/3 point in the story (Why didn’t Miss Marple SEE it?) But alas, as in all the Agatha Christie mysteries, I was wrong. Really wrong.
It’s sad to think that this was the last Miss Marple mystery that Agatha Christie wrote. It was actually published posthumously after her death. Well, Marple’s last case is a hum-dinger!
I thoroughly enjoyed Stephanie Cole’s narration as well.

I love the Christie mysteries, especially those of Miss Marple. If you haven't read this one, then by all means you should do so. It is a good mystery, well plotted and fun to read. I am rating it 4 stars because Miss Marple spends a great deal of the book on the sidelines. The other characters are interesting, but I wanted to see them with Marple, not on their own.

Excellent story. Different from other Agatha Christie 'whodunits', you'll love the twists and turn of this plot. Enough Miss Marple to make it a true Miss Marple novel! The setting is great and the characters are well written. One of Agatha's best.

Miss Maple plays rather a background role in this one and it is also the first, thus far the only, one where I not only figured it out but figured it out fairly early on. While this one is classic Christie with many of the elements in place it is also definitely not peak Christie.

Plot...a man and wife buy a home where a murder was committed. The case is 18 years cold but still pretty straightforward. Still the couple must find the killer without being killed...
