About the Author

Daniel Vickers is the head of the department of history at the University of British Columbia. His previous book, Farmers and Fisherman: Two Centuries of Work in Essex County, Massachusetts, won the John Dunning Prize from the American Historical Association and the Louis Gottschalk Prize from the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies. Vince Walsh is an independent scholar and project coordinator at the Maritime History Archive, Memorial University of Newfoundland.

This is an excellent, well-researched, readable monograph on 18th and 19th century Salem, Massachusetts, which shows the rapid economic and social change sweeping the early Republic. I would have liked to see how the rural economy fit into the life of the town a bit more, with wool, agriculture and timber influences. But, in addition to being a fine monograph, this is a thoroughly enjoyable book to read.

This is an amazing work. The author uses a number of unpublished sources to put together the history of maritime commerce in colonial Massachusetts, through the lens of Salem harbor. There is a great deal for the economic and social historian as well as many great stories about seafaring. A wonderful addition to his Farmers and Fishermen of Essex County. If you have shown enough interest in this book to search the reviews then it is clear this is the book for you.
