- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2019I was feeling overwhelmed with work and hadn’t read a book in weeks, but then I was approved for an arc of Echo North through Netgalley. I initially opened it just to get a feel for it but then I read the first page, and the one after that and the one after that ... until I had the book finished a few hours later. I needed this book more than I can convey. It helped me relax and release some of the tension I was carrying around.
It’s a light read but a beautiful read. If you’re already familiar with the fairytale East of the Sun, West of the Moon then I think this book will hold a special place in your heart too. Echo North takes the original fairytale and makes it their own.
Echo’s father goes missing for weeks so she goes in search of him and finds him frozen in the snow, she’s then approached by a wolf and asked if she would like to make a bargain: she can come live in the wolf’s house for a year in exchange for the magic to release her father so he can go home.
So this house, I’ve never read a EotSWofM retelling with a house like this. The rooms have to be bound to the house or they disappear and that’s the wolf’s job and that’s what he’s training Echo to do. My favorite room (and Echo’s) is the library, it’s a room with paintings all over the wall and once you touch the painting you enter it’s story. You become a participant! You can talk to the characters, interact, help them on their quest or escape imprisonment. It was completely fascinating and I really wish my library could do this because “hello, Rhys” *grins*
“It is like any wild thing that has been tamed. It is sometimes safe, and sometimes not.”
Just like in the original fairytale the heroine must sleep in a room without lighting any candles and seeing who else is in the room (I know I’d last half the night before striking a match lol). She knows the wolf is in the room with her when the lights go out but then it seems someone else takes his place ...
“She wept in the snow and crumbled to ash, for I was only pages in a book, burned and lost and gone forever.”
So one year, one year at this house goes by quickly for Echo, and every night she resists lighting a match until finally ....
“Don’t let go, says my heart.”
Thank you Netgalley for providing me an Arc in exchange for an honest review and thank you for the author for writing such a masterpiece (though I’m still sad over that reindeer).
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2019I really wanted to love this story, but it just didn't quite do it for me. The main character just isn't quite what I want her to be. The "beast" character is less than I want him to be. And the "evil" queen feels one-dimensional. I don't quite understand her motivation. The whole story is close, but not quite there. The writing is a strange mix. At times it's very casual, but other times, it's very rich and full of imagery. Some of my favorite parts (minor spoiler here) are when the girl is in the magical house. I feel like that part of the story could have been fleshed out more. When Echo actually goes North, I feel like the story just splits off and changes. Things get weird. Also, the male characters in the story are pretty weak. The females seem to have most of the power, which isn't necessarily bad, but it makes it hard to like the guys. The end wasn't as satisfying as I'd hoped for. I think this author has a LOT of potential, though, and the book is worth the read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2024Written like a fairy tale with the clean simple language of one and all the magic and wonder. One of the best books I’ve ever read.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2019Every now and then I come across a book that is so gorgeous, so poetic, so chock-full of FEELINGS that I feel like I'm having an extra-sensory reading experience—like I'm not just reading the words, but tasting and swimming in them. These are the books that make me alternately feel ecstatically delighted, and make me despair of ever writing anything half so amazing.
Joanna Ruth Meyer's sophomore novel, ECHO NORTH, is exactly that sort of book. I picked it up on Monday, after waking up sick and spending the morning feeling listless and miserable. Almost as soon as I started reading, I forgot my sore throat and sniffly nose, completely caught up in Meyer's masterfully told story. It's a retelling of one of my favorite fairy tales, which means I tend to be extra critical as a reader, but Meyer manages to evoke classic young adult fantasy writers like Robin McKinley while still crafting a story that is completely fresh, sophisticated, and original. the whole book feels like a love song to creativity and imagination, filled to bursting with birds that become dragons, a magical house stitched together like a quilt, and a swoon-worthy romance. And as if all of that wasn't enough, it had THE BEST TWIST—I'm really, really good at predicting surprises, and I thought I had all the puzzles in ECHO figured out, but one in particular really left me reeling in the best way!
If you love fairytales, outcast girls, or sumptuous description, be sure to get a copy of ECHO NORTH when it releases in a month. You won't regret it! I've loaned this out to almost half a dozen people at this point and everyone has raved about how wonderful it is.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2019Not quite the best retelling of East of the Sun that I was hoping for
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2019I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even though - to be frank - I didn't expect to. The magical house was the best of characters, and who wouldn't want that library? I was almost DROOLING during those scenes! I did think the beginning of the book dragged quite a bit, but it really picked up momentum as it went. Echo was a wonderful character, and I loved the way she met each challenge. One particular plot twist near the end was done very well - it's a rare thing to surprise me, but this book managed it. I do wish, though, that there had been more clues then cryptic statements made by the wolf. He and Hal both needed a bit more development in order to see the story through. The Four Winds were beautifully incorporated, and the concept of the Oldest Magic was very well done as well. I will definitely look for more from this author - I was thoroughly, "read it all in one sitting" entertained!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read!
Echo North was magical. It felt like being pulled into every favourite fairytale I’ve ever read all at once and as though I was reading them for the first time all over again. There is no other way to describe that feeling than magical. Time warped and changed as I read and I was pulled into my very own “mirror-book” and shadowed along with the characters through each of their adventures. I’ve wanted to read this book for some time and I am so glad I finally did.
