- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2018I've know the author for a very long time, but never really knew his story. David has always been positive and upbeat. I didn't know him before use of the wheel chair. Iost my mom as a teen and was a teen dad who got married at 19. My wife and I struggled with time and finances, but finished college in 4 years. I wish I had read this book while going through those tough times. David's positive outlook and drive is inspirational. In addition to the first copy I bought for myself, I downloaded the Kindle version and now I've purchased 4 additional books for my Pastor; church youth leader and a teen at my church. As a small business owner, I might purchase a few more for staff. Thanks David for being a continued inspiration to others,
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2018. . . is so much easier to say than to actually live out. I had the privilege of seeing “Gus” turn what most would view as a life shattering tragedy into a platform from which he continually proclaims through the life he lives that all things are possible – though not necessarily easy!
I always felt challenged, humbled but equally uplifted in every time I personally engaged with David. Getting Undressed provides the reader the same experience and impact. I’ve witnessed some of his practices where his unique communication style [and voice] fostered teamwork amongst his players as he encouraged them to synergistically work together as a group of individual leaders. He prepared them to be successful in the game of basketball as well as for the game of life – sublimely the latter taking precedence over the former. All this through the filter of an uncompromising faith.
Getting Undressed is a must read as an encouragement for those who have experienced the “nicks” of life, the “challenges” of life and/or the “tragedies” of life. It is also a must read for those who, thus far, have avoided such detours so you are better prepared for when you do!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2018I was recently made aware of the newly released book “Getting Undressed – From Paralysis to Purpose” by David Cooks. What began as a read primarily for entertainment, quickly turned into a book that challenged me to reflect upon my personal and business life. David shares the extreme roller coaster ride and wide range of emotions he’s experienced, while making such a positive impact on thousands of children and adults through his coaching, teaching, and other good works. As he so eloquently says, “living off his abilities, not disabilities.” I began reflecting on my life’s journey, and upon my successes and challenging times in all facets of my life. The key learnings and little nuggets from the book are as relevant in our personal lives as in our business dealings and interactions. We must consider WHAT we do and How we do it, as our actions and character transcends all aspects of our lives. The last chapter talks about finding one’s purpose. David assesses that his purpose is to help others find their purpose… and for this reader, he has provided me much to ponder and consider. Thanks David!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2019Outstanding read! Great lesson for all about overcoming obstacles, and making the best of the gifts that God has given us. Mr. Cooks has been dealt with much more than most of us ever have, yet handles it all with grace, poise, and humility. I would recommend this book for both adults and children — teaches all of us that each day is a gift, and that we shouldn’t ever take it for granted. Quite inspirational!
