"A terrifying and timely account of resistance in the face of the greatest of evils.”—Alex Kershaw, New York Times bestselling author of The First Wave

An enthralling story that vividly resurrects the web of everyday Germans who resisted Nazi rule

Nazi Germany is remembered as a nation of willing fanatics. But beneath the surface, countless ordinary, everyday Germans actively resisted Hitler. Some passed industrial secrets to Allied spies. Some forged passports to help Jews escape the Reich. For others, resistance was as simple as writing a letter denouncing the rigidity of Nazi law. No matter how small the act, the danger was the same--any display of defiance was met with arrest, interrogation, torture, and even death.

Defying Hitler follows the underground network of Germans who believed standing against the Fuhrer to be more important than their own survival. Their bravery is astonishing--a schoolgirl beheaded by the Gestapo for distributing anti-Nazi fliers; a German American teacher who smuggled military intel to Soviet agents, becoming the only American woman executed by the Nazis; a pacifist philosopher murdered for his role in a plot against Hitler; a young idealist who joined the SS to document their crimes, only to end up, to his horror, an accomplice to the Holocaust. This remarkable account illuminates their struggles, yielding an accessible narrative history with the pace and excitement of a thriller.

Review

“Gripping . . . manages to keep you guessing what some of the outcomes might be, despite our overall knowledge of Germany’s ultimate fate. . . . [Defying Hitler] reminds us all that good people can dare to stand and fight evil and powerful regimes regardless of the odds.”—Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

“The question was often asked amid the ruins of the Third Reich: why did the Germans fight on for so long when all was lost? Those liberated from concentration camps knew the answer. Terror, mass murder, ruthless and barbaric persecution—all opposition had been mercilessly quashed. In
Defying Hitler, Gordon Thomas and Greg Lewis show in chilling and vivid detail just how courageous were those who dared to defy Hitler. A terrifying and timely account of resistance in the face of the greatest of evils.”—Alex Kershaw, New York Times bestselling author of Avenue of Spies: A True Story of Terror, Espionage, and One American Family's Heroic Resistance in Nazi-Occupied Paris

“Were the Germans of the 1930s and '40s 'Hitler's Willing Executioners,' in Daniel Jonah Goldhagen's memorable phrase? This important book offers alternative profiles in courage—portraits of the ordinary men and women who resisted Hitler, aided Jews and spied for the Allies during the dark days of World War II.”

“Fascinating.”

“[A] well-researched volume that drills into the darkness
to examine the lives of those within the Third Reich who actively defied Hitler’s orders from 1933 to 1945, chronicling the major resistance movements such as the White Rose movement and Valkyrie plots as well as lesser-known subversions within the military intelligence circles. . . . Highly recommended for those wishing to comprehend life in Nazi Germany and what courage it took not to surrender to authority. This masterful workwill best serve general audiences and historians alike.”Library Journal (starred review)

“This carefully researched book challenges the myth that the German people were virtually unanimous in support of Hitler. . . .
Defying Hitler is filled with almost unbearable suspense and drama.”Booklist (starred review)

“Anengrossing and accessible history of Germans who risked, and mostly lost, their lives opposing the Nazi regime . . . An informative counterpoint to accounts of widespread German complicity with the Holocaust.”Publishers Weekly

“A deeply researched work that passionately challenges the popular myth that 'the German people followed Hitler as if as one mass, mesmerized like the children of Hamelin by the Pied Piper.'"

I've always been interested in resistance movements, and the events around the 2020 election and Jan prompted me to start reading about it. I first watched "Sophie Scholl: The Final Days" on YouTube, then read "Sophie Scholl and the White Rose" -- a great book. But I wanted to know more, so I ordered "Defying Hitler".
This book was an incredible read. I never wanted to put it down, and whenever I did I couldn't wait to get back to it. I had no idea that there was such a vast network of individuals and groups, including high-ranking Nazi officials, who opposed Hitler and put their lives on the line to overturn the Nazi regime. Indeed, many did end up losing their lives, but it is extremely heartening to read how committed they all were to rid the country, and the world, of this one evil dictator.
The only negative is that the authors were so thorough in their research that no reader will ever keep all the names of the actors straight. But you don't have to in order to fully appreciate (I want to say "enjoy", but that's an awkward word to use in this kind of book) all the events.
Very highly recommended.

Very interesting information about the very brave people who tried to fight back in different ways, against formidable odds. Of course, almost all were caught and killed. After Hitler came into power and was in full control of the military, fighting from within was impossible. It took a world war to remove him. A cautionary tale. Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.

A phenomenal book about the German resistance. It goes far deeper into the different groups of anti-Nazis. I was really wanting more information about the Rote Kapelle when I bought it and it didn’t disappoint. I could not put it down and learned so many new pieces to my WW2 puzzle.

The writing style is both beautiful and easy to read. I’m always fascinated by the background of the authors to books like this. And Gordon Thomas has a direct link to its history. Also, I emailed the other co-author after I finished his brilliant book and he actually responded with kindness and gratitude. Must read!

For years, I've been bothered by an insistent question, how could an entire population fall under the spell of a dictator and commit truly horrible acts against other human beings. This book has caused me to rephrase that question. How could so many Germans fall under the spell of such a dictator? "Defying Hitler" makes clear that a certain element of the German people not only failed to fall under the spell but actively worked for its downfall. Yes, some of the stories about the assassination attempts against Hitler have been told in other books. However, this book collects many other stories of how everyday Germans put up a resistance to the Nazi regime. The book also highlighted for me the fatal flaw in most of the resistance - timidity. They were simply too timid and indecisive to overcome the ruthlessness of the SS and the Gestapo. I came away from the book wondering how different history might have been had they succeeded.
Perhaps my only criticism of the book, is the failure of the authors to make clear the lessons readers can take from their research. Timidity is a danger, when bold action is needed to save the humanity of an entire nation. I hope more readers will see this danger in today's world.

From the time I read Anne Frank at age ten, I started studying the rise of Hitler, the Resistance and WWII Europe because I could and still can't grasp how the Holocaust happened in well developed countries right in plain sight. Like Erik Larson's "In The Garden of Beasts" and James Pool's books "Who Funded Hitler 1918-1933" and "Hitler and His Allies 1933-1945," "Defying Hitler" answers in well researched detail the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party due to the terms the Germans agreed to in the Treaty of Versailles and how people will react when their quality of basic living is compromised. Where Gordon Thomas and Greg Lewis excel is how they bring each facet of the story together in a book that has a consistent flow and great reminders of who each member of the parties are when they are reintroduced throughout the book. The depth of resisters within Hitler's closest regime and their despising of what became of Germany under his rule makes for a part of the story I hadn't read about and adds to the dilemmas Germany still faces today as younger generations continue to question the blame of the Nazi Party as it applies to their lives. As early as 1929, well respected German lawyers, authors, professors and career military generals raised concern about the persona of Hitler and his influence on the German people as they saw fellow colleagues and friends being arrested and later persecuted for their heritage and beliefs without repercussion. Throughout the 1930's resisters from the military, German Jews, educators, business professionals, clergy and media members tried to warn the US, Britain and Russia about the coup Hitler was creating under extreme danger to their lives and those of their families and given no credence until Poland, Czechoslovakia and Russia were invaded. Although, the end of the story is known, the missions these Germans carried out saved many lives and deserve to be recognized as they are throughout the book. The determination, bravery and love for Germany and their desire to bring the country back to one that could be respected throughout the world, is a story that needs to be read without skimming a page as many details are given that can't be missed. This book would make for a great tool for high school and college students studying Nazi Germany.
