Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3–5—Glaser's pitch-perfect debut novel set in Harlem introduces the endearing biracial Vanderbeeker family. Twins Isa and Jessie, along with siblings Oliver, Hyacinth, and Laney (ranging from ages four-and-three-quarters to 12), plus a dog, a cat, a bunny, and their parents, all live together in a brownstone on 141st Street. Unfortunately, cantankerous landlord Mr. Biederman refuses to renew the lease. They have the five days before Christmas to change his mind or they will have to move out of the only home they have ever known. Each child has a plan and a distinct personality to match; the neighbors and friends all do, too. Glaser's detailed line drawings of the block's brownstones emphasize that this book is not just about one family; rather, it encompasses the stories of an interconnected community. Jessie creates a Rube Goldberg contraption that makes music while watering the building garden. Elderly Miss Josie and Mr. Jeet live above the Vanderbeekers and count on their support. A school dance, sibling rivalry, and preparing just the right gifts for Christmas are all subplots that Glaser deftly uses as a tool to both develop the characters and engage readers in the family's entertaining daily chaos. Glaser's love for the Vanderbeekers shines through in her prose and stick drawings. Readers will look forward to future adventures. VERDICT A highly recommended purchase for all middle grade collections. Fans of Sydney Taylor and Jeanne Birdsall are sure to be satisfied by this contemporary urban update of the family-centered novel.—Eva Thaler-Sroussi, Glencoe Public Library, IL

Review

"Glaser’s love for the Vanderbeekers shines through in her prose and stick drawings. Readers will look forward to future adventures. A highly recommended purchase for all middle grade collections." — School Library Journal (starred review)

"Few [families] in children’s literature are as engaging or amusing as the Vanderbeekers." — Booklist (starred review)

"[Karina Yan Glaser’s] contemporary family narrative preserves the winsome tone and innocence of the aforementioned classics while updating them with a rich, modern diversity of characters, settings and problems. Glaser’s warmhearted story highlights a cold truth: What is often missing in the busy lives of today’s plugged-in, checked-out families is a sense of community. In the vast village of New York City, she suggests, what it takes to raise a child can still be found on one square block." — New York Times Book Review

"A heartwarming story about family and community that will appeal to readers who also enjoy an old-fashioned feel." — Kirkus Reviews

"With rich dialogue and detailed descriptions of the neighborhood, the text provides a humorous and heartwarming story about siblings uniting to save their home. Through the Vanderbeekers, Glaser provides a portrait of the splendors of Harlem and the sense of community that can be built among neighbors of all backgrounds. This will draw fans of rollicking family stories, and while it’s centered on Christmas, it would be enjoyable any time of the year." — Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

"Uplifting. Readers who enjoy a cheery story that’s simultaneously old-fashioned and of the moment in its sensibility will enjoy this introduction to the Vanderbeekers and look forward to their future adventures." — Publishers Weekly

"Glaser’s third-person narration weaves individual characters’ plot threads and a palpable sense of place through the larger family story in the tradition of Jeanne Birdsall, Sydney Taylor, Elizabeth Enright, and Hilary McKay." — The Horn Book

“The Vanderbeekers join the Melendys, the Cassons, and the ‘All of a Kind’ Family on my list of favorite book-families. I’m in love with every single Vanderbeeker! Their story is utterly enchanting: I did not want it to end. More, please?” — Linda Sue Park, Newbery medalist

A charming tale about family, for the whole family

A charming tale about family, for the whole family
Children’s books are not just for kids! Particularly now in this unprecedented time, I think readers of all ages could use an afternoon curled up with this heartwarming story. Karina Yan Glaser’s debut novel, The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street, transports us into the cozy Harlem brownstone of the five Vanderbeeker children and their three beloved pets. While Papa, a computer technician and superintendent of the brownstone, and Mama, a pastry chef, are at the head of the household, the five Vanderbeeker children are always leading the story, and certainly all the mischief! They know every local shopkeeper by name and can’t walk more than half a block in their Central Harlem neighborhood without stopping to chat with a passing neighbor, mailman, or teacher. The book begins on a cold, December day, with the whole family sprawled out in the living room of the Vanderbeeker brownstone. When the building’s grouchy landlord, “The Beiderman,” says he’s not renewing their lease, the children only have 11 days to save their family home before Christmas. So, while Mama and Papa start packing clothes and dishes into boxes, the Vanderbeeker kids sneak upstairs to the roof, the “Roof of Epic Proportions,” a space reserved for emergency family meetings (and no adults).Simultaneously charming and just plain funny, the plot will keep readers engaged throughout all of its twists and turns. If you’re looking for a little reality escape, I can’t recommend this book enough.“I have always believed that raising kids means more than just being a good parent and trying to do the right things. It means surrounding your kids with amazing people who can bring science experiments and jam cookies, laughter and joy, and beautiful experiences into their lives.” (Mr. Vanderbeeker)

The Vanderbeekers are one of those lively families I always wanted to belong to when I was a kid. I would read about the Quimbys and the Melendys and the All-of-a-Kind family and wish I was either a friend to those kids or else their long-lost sister And this hit me very much the same way, except that now that I'm an adult, I spent half my time wishing I was a kid who was friends with the Vanderbeeker kids and half the time wishing I was an adult who was friends with their parents. Because their parents are EXCELLENT. Warm, loving, sensible, kind, firm. I could totally be friends with them.

We read "The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street" for a family read aloud. This read follows the adventures of the Vanderbeeker children as they strive to convince their grumpy landlord not to evict them from their beloved brownstone home just before Christmas. With heartwarming determination and creativity, the siblings embark on a series of charming escapades ultimately teaching valuable lessons about love, friendship, and the power of unity. I would gift this to any family for a charming Christmas read.

Thank you to the @kidlitechange network for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
The Vanderbeekers have lived in their brownstone apartment in Harlem for the past 6 years. Now it is almost Christmas, and their landlord, Mr. Beiderman, has decided not to renew their lease, and without giving a reason. The five Vanderbeeker children come together and make plans to try to convince Mr. Beiderman to let them stay in the apartment. They try bringing him breakfast, making/ buying gifts, and even start a petition to allow them to stay in their home. In the midst of preparing for their move, the family is also preparing for Christmas, which is a little sadder for them this year since it will be the last holiday in the brownstone. Will the children be able to convince the Beiderman to let them stay?
I loved this book! When I started reading, I immediately fell in love with the entire family. The author did an amazing job of developing the characters, and I loved the unique personalities of each of the children. I thought it was great that we see the sibling rivalry and disagreements between the children, but also how they come together to help their family. I also love that the Vanderbeekers are such a hard-working, loving family. You know that no matter what happens to them, they will be okay because of how much they love and care for one another.
I couldn’t wait to purchase a copy for my classroom!

This book was fantastic. The characters in the book were fantastic, especially the kids. The plot was good, and I was curious to see how the story would end. Writing in this book was fun, and each of the kids personalities really came though in the writing. The romance between Benny and Isa in the book was fantastic. I would recommend this for fans of Middle Grade. I really enjoyed this book.

There is so much to love about The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street, everything from the setting to the characters and the storyline were just wonderful. First off is the setting of Harlem with all of these fun detailed descriptions of the brownstone and surrounding shops and landmarks, the darling black and white illustrations by the author for the layout of the ground floor apartment, an illustration of where the other residents of the building live and full-page map of Harlem on the front inside cover. And look at that cover, utterly gorgeous, the colors just pop. The Vanderbeekers are a large family that includes two parents, five siblings, a dog, a cat and even a bunny, together they bring all the joyous sounds of a bustling household with siblings who love and care about one another. Each of the children is delightful on their own and so individually realized and unique. There's even an extended family made of friends, relatives, and neighbors with lovely interactions between the Vanderbeeker children and their friends that appear in natural ways, with everything from the mailman who while dropping off the mail gets homemade dog treats from Hyacinth, Oliver and his best friend Jimmy who talk on their walkie talkie's, the upstairs neighbors Miss Josie and Mr. Jeet who visit with young Laney and even Isa's music teacher Mr. Van Hooten, who together give this book a warm, comfy feeling of both community and family. Not to mention there is a side story between one of the twins and Benny, whose mom owns the local bakery and a bit of a mix-up over an upcoming dance. Plus food, glorious food references making me want to try the hot chocolate with cayenne and cinnamon that was mentioned. I really love how the Vanderbeeker siblings are trying to win over their curmudgeonly landlord by drawing on their individual strengths in writing poetry, drawing, crafting, music, and kindness toward animals to make gifts for the Beiderman in hopes he would see how valuable they were and renew their lease. Their plans to smoother him with kindness don't always go as planned, but they aren't easily discouraged and they do make a lovely team. I was really touched when the reason Mr. Beiderman hasn't left his apartment was revealed, and how the children realized that "home is more than a place" and that what they really wanted is for Mr. Beiderman to feel better. I loved this book so much, it was such a warm hug of a book. The Vanderbeeker household is delightfully chaotic with a hyperactive dog and kids who get up to hilarious antics. It’s also such a loving household, I adored reading about the bonds between the siblings, their parents and their lovely neighbours. Speaking of neighbours, Mr Jeet and Miss Josie are so sweet, I love them so much. Without spoiling anything, I also want to say just how heartwarming the Christmas breakfast was, I loved it. This book was so wonderful and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

Plot - The Vanderbeekers's landlord gives them notice that their lease won't be renewed and they have to be out just after Christmas. The 5 children set out to do something about it.

"Majestic street lamps were staggered on both sides of the sidewalk, spaced fifty paces apart. In the evening, the warm glow of the lights made passersby feel that this street might have looked the same one hundred years earlier."

I really really loved the imagery in this book. The brownstone where the Vanderbeekers live is described so beautifully and with such details that you can imagine it to be the happiest place in the world. All 5 children have unique personalities that distinguish them but they look out for each other in that special way siblings do. They are also surrounded by loving friends neighbours and pets. The book is warm and cozy and a really really lovely read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmassy tween novel
Reviewed in Germany on January 8, 2020
Charming is the word that comes to mind when I think about this christmassy tween novel.
Set in Harlem, New York City, the Vanderbeekers' lease is not being renewed to the brownstone they have lived in for years. The five children are upset about this news and set about devising a plan to change their landlord's mind. Having never seen the landlord, Mr. Beiderman, over the years they have lived there, he has grown in their imagination a someone who is larger than life.
Although the plot is a bit predictable and the denouement is very quick and smooth, this book is so fun and makes a great family read-aloud.
I would enjoy checking in on the Vanderbeekers in the future.
